Bob Ross Cutting Down Happy Little Trees

What do you get when you cross Bob Ross with a chainsaw? What you get is someone cutting down happy little trees. Since I have been making KZfaq videos, people have been comparing me to Bob Ross. I have been called the Rob Ross of chainsaws, the Bob Ross of nature, etc.
In this video, I do some thinning on my forest land. Cutting down excess trees so the remaining trees will be more healthy and more fire resistant. While doing it, I roll with the whole Bob Ross theme, and have a little fun with it.
In this video I mean no disrespect to Bob Ross. This was all done with the intentions of having a little fun. Bob Ross brought entertainment, joy and inspiration to many people in his life.
I was never very familiar with Bob Ross. When people started mentioning him in my comments, I had to look him up. I did remember the guy from long ago, but not by name. After watching a few of his videos, I found him to be entertaining, inspiring and very relaxing. All respect to the late Bob Ross. If you are not familiar with him, you should go watch some of his videos.

It's not everyone who is concerned about their logs as much as you are. That poor log that didn't have a friend, and you went and got it one. Truly a kind man. Now you will have a happy forest. {And a healthier one.}

Great video and especially the topic! I completely agree with your philosophy! I spent a number of years working in the midwest and was shocked at the number of people back there that believe the western forest are all logged off by the horrible timber industry! Keep up the forest education, we all need to hear it!

I love your forestry 101 videos, please continue. I have about 7 acres of trees and you have already taught me so much. Also, who needs wedges when you can get Bob Ross to just push the trees over.

The choosing and felling aspect of thinning takes little time; the cleanup, however... Ye gods. All the poison oak around the stumps makes me itch from here! That hung up and contrary Doug-fir (5:00 mark) gave me a wry chuckle. Seems most of mine do that, and I have to take, um, measures to get them on the ground. Thankfully, the hundreds of hazel copses slow the fall... The pesky winged insect buzzing your face at the end reminds me that "Flies gotta fly" and as Groucho once said: "Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana." Cheers from Linn County

I am fortunate that I don’t get poison oak very much. If I could find a market for it, I would be set. When trees are thick like this, they don’t always have the right set up to go down the direction I want them to go down. In this case either leaning the wrong direction, or having a couple bent over oak trees for them to land on in the only open spot available for them to land. “fruit flies like a banana” I like it.

I like your videos because you actually do something instead of standing in your driveway splitting delivered logs! I cut on a 640 acre private forest deep in the Cascades. We don't mill any, some goes to firewood but most is piled and burnt in the fall. I know how much work it takes and I'm impressed with how good of a job you are doing with your land.

Good video Wilson, fun and educational. I've been doing thinning on our Beech that have beech bark disease. Even though they are native they are almost an invasive species and block out other species from growing.

Thanks Paul. Douglas fir can be the same way here. It is native but it’s growing in places where it shouldn’t be growing in such abundance. Because of that, they can be susceptible to bugs and disease.

hey there. It's Pete again. 105 soon to be acres. What is the smallest cc that will take you size bar and chain? I have a slight lower back issue and cutting in a standing position would help greatly. I'm guessing a 1978 031 is too small. Also, I see you 're running a 2 wheel tractor. How often are you stuck/LOL? I like the idea and price point. You're not concerned of the cable breaking? I see you do not distance yourself whit the cord..

How much clean up do you have to do, do you have to remove the foliage and small twiggy stuff for fire control, or are you able to leave it as organic matter to feed the floor? Here we break down treetops to increase ground contact which encourages rot (anything smaller than firewood size).

I meant to talk about that in the video but I forgot. In a lot of cases, I can just lop all the slash up with the chainsaw so it lays down low. I think similar to what you are describing. When it’s close to the ground it becomes less of a fire hazard and rots a lot faster. In this spot I plan on coming back after we get some rain and burn most of it. This is an extra nice part of the property and I want to clean it up and make it look nice. The ash from burning also adds nutrients in the soil. I will likely be doing videos about that this winter.

Dag Damm fly. Have a few 100 acres of forest in Western Montana I manage in much the same manner as you. Too dang many trees 😂. Just wondering where your located. My forest is predominantly P Pine but I've been managing it more for Douglass fir these days being the Pine market is shot. Just curious about your location as you have quite a bit more diversity than I have. Remember as your working away what my old pa always said, "poor people have poor ways".

I notice a lot of small diameter logs / big diameter branches on the ground in a lot of your videos. Looks like old slash or small logs that were just left too rot. They would still make firewood here in the UK. Why not collect them, dry them out and burn em ?

I have done wood processing videos, mostly last summer. But stay tuned, we will be dealing with this firewood in an upcoming video. And probably more at the coast property later this summer.

Should do a video of what it's really like to do the work you do ....all the walking dragging the cables out ..brush cleanup ...stacking firewood...you know...all the mundane stuff nobody wants to see that is 90 percent of the work.... nevermind... people won't watch that part lol cheers ...but if anybody could make that into a video that was watchable it would be you

I don’t really see the Bob Ross connection either. It’s just what they tell me, mostly over on KZfaq shorts. I will have to look up Bruce Dern, not familiar with him.
