James Kalm has, since the late 1970’s, been an avid fan of the work of Bob Thompson (1937-1966). During that span of time, your correspondent has witnessed a revival and reassessment of the significance of Thompson and his approach to Figurative Expressionism. Thompson has an undeniable sensitivity to color, and the unique ability to create spatial and harmonic levels of rich surface chromatics. “…[In] a twisted sort of way I’m doomed to be buried alive in cadmium orange, red, yellow light with flowers on my grave of magenta violet, and my casket being the canvas for forcefully having to wrap, walk and slide into it every day like the wan Prussian blue shore”- Bob Thompson. A painter’s painter “Agony & Ecstasy” presents major works from every year of the artist’s mature practice 1958-1966. A musical introduction is provided by NYC Jazz. This program was recorded April 13, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Another Fantastic video James. Thank you for introducing me to an American Figurative artists, during the time Abstract Expressionism was the big thing. It's alway good to know how Figurative art could hold itself with some strength, against the Art of that day, thanks to work of such artists as Bob Thompson. I Love Bob's use of colour and his bird motif gave a Beautiful Humour to his paintings. Thank you James and Thank you Kate.

I love your videos bikeman! I've been watching them since I was about 17/18. now I'm in my final year of my Bachelor of Fine Arts and looking forward to eventually getting my MFA, and I still watch these! your work has had a lot to do with expanding both my interest in art, and exposing me to an incredible amount of artists. thank you for your work!!

Thanks @cringetingles, it's always gratifying to hear from viewers about how they've found this project useful. I've always thought that knowledge is power, and getting some insight into the "art world" makes it easier to engage(?) Congrats on your BFA, and now on to bigger and better things...JK

As an older painter myself, I've always liked his work. I have a good book of his art. This is, indeed, a great looking exhibit of his work. Thanks to you and Kate.

The art institute has 5 paintings of Thompson. The first time I came across them was when four of them were displayed together. They stop you in your tracks. My first thought when seeing them was that Gauguin and Cezanne had been simultaneously reincarnated in one person. Thank you Kate!

What an amazing painter, a discovery for me.. one can see Kandinskys strong influence as mentioned but he does pull off something unique.

About a quarter of the way in to this video, I just had the visceral feeling that this guy is truly a painter's painter. That steady drumbeat of steady swathes of different paint - laid on as steadily and unceasingly as his handwriting hits each letter with equal strength. What a rock solid treat! Thanks James, and Kate.
