James Kalm has been aware of the leather works of Winfred Rembert for several years now. Since his first viewing, your correspondent has been fascinated with Rembert’s ability to evoke images and narratives from such an unexpected medium as tooled leather. “All of Me” is a career spanning retrospective of this unique artist, in which viewers can see the artistic development from a masterly depictions of characters (both good and evil) to later works that cast his pictorial stories into abstract designs of color, contrast and form.
“Dial Hammons Rauschenberg” at David Richards draws out comparisons of technique, materials and aesthetics from three masters of the abject. Robert Rauschenberg is one of the icons of American art of the late twentieth century. His pioneering work with assemblage and found objects set a course for what eventually emerged as “Neo-Dada” and Pop Art. In harmony with Thornton Dial and David Hammons it becomes apparent that Rauschenberg, the Southerner, was influenced by, and recast works of the “Southern Vernacular” by rural African American artists. He thereby puts a home-grown spin on the “readymade” object, the cornerstone idea of conceptual art espoused by Marcel Duchamp.
This program was recorded March 21, and April 1 2023. A musical introduction is provided by Flat Iron Charlie Guitar. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Amazing! I wish I had the opportunity to see even one of his works up close. I very much recommend Winfred's book "Chasing Me to My Grave".

Thank you 'James' and Kate--these works are great fun to see. Not the best colors on the Dial pieces, in my view as a painter. Some of his stuff is sublime.

0:28 this makes a cool piece of screen capture art. The hand spraying the letters out is kind of gritty, overlayed with the font lettering of your intro title graphics. You are welcome…lol. Your videos are a wealth of accidental urban pulse art as I would call it. A lot of great moments pop up in your transitions. Some professor (you) could do a whole class on your style and the whole urban pulse movement I think you represent and are a keystone for. We out here in rural farming America (PNW) look in on the lot of you in your urban centers and get to see from a distance how culture is evolving in all these different interesting ways. It’s like looking at different little habitats around the landscape. As observers, your style exemplifies the sweet spot of where the arts are and can go… thats the urban pulse we out here in the sticks respond or react towards. Your background in the arts and your humanity, which comes across, makes you and thus your style very much relatable. A good attribute for an accidental ambassador. Anyway, your videos are a bit of a gem of cool ideas. Well done mate!😊

Let me just add a corollary so I don’t sound like just a fan boy. Here in the USA, you get a lot of Travel Vlogers who cover for example the African continent and all 56 countries. There are many who do it, but few have an expats sense of how to unlock various elements of these cultures they visit. In your subject area specialty, you are outstanding in your field (as the scarecrow does in his fields…lol). And you bring the human touch to each experience. Okay… enough out of me in this public setting. I’m waiting for my 20 cedis.

Hey @ brokenrulerlabs, thanks for your response, I sincerely appreciate your insights. As a kid, who grew up in the boonies (small town Idaho), I always fanaticized what life in a cultural center would be like. Moving to New York at the end of the 1970s, I got a chance to experience a vital and energetic art scene, in all its good and not so good aspects. When I discovered KZfaq (with the help of my tech savvy kids) in 2006, I realized that this was a tool I could use to try and bring a view of the New York art scene to the world. As one of the longest continuous content providers here at KZfaq (I’ve posted around 1500 vids in over seventeen years, with more than 50,000 subs) I’ve witnessed how this platform and its contributors have evolved. Though I started out with no idea of how to produce video, and no technical experience, I’ve taught myself in public, a rudimentary level of video production, using the simplest camera equipment, and editing programs. In the past couple of years, I’ve watched as other “producers” have caught on to what I saw as a fantastic opportunity to expose ideas. Some of these folks have become “KZfaq superstars” with millions of views and subs, making loads of cash. While I admire the success of these entrepreneurs, I’ve never monetized my channels because, that’s never been my goal. I knew that my chosen subject (the art scene, particularly painting) is of very limited appeal to the general public (though a few of the programs have hundreds of thousands, even millions of views). My mission has been, and will be, to try and create a worldwide community of art (painting) enthusiasts, who are part of a supportive and informed tribe, and if I can throw in some views of city life, to contextualize the work, so much the better. “Knowledge is Power,” if I can expand the knowledge, and awareness of artists, then I’ve empowered my crew, and done my job. This isn’t “20 cedis”, but it’s probably worth what you paid for it…Thanks again…JK PS I hope your watching the James Kalm Report channel as well. kzfaq.info/love/MAQTBPIm_0zRgTQVjS2NIA
