I think that, like so many other adults, he saw Bobby as a blank slate. So Gilbert, not wanting his whole Faulkneresque/Southern-Gothic/Tennessee Williams/Old-South energy to die out, attempted to have Bobby carry it to a new generation.

@@Venusingatorade A distinct possibility, but we shouldn't leave out regional divides as well. Louisiana was always seen as 'different' than the rest of the South. Hell, even among the Deep South it stands out. Most often, this was attributed to Louisiana's well-established 'Creole' identity which had persisted across French, Spanish, French again and finally American ownership; influenced by each of them as well the indigenous peoples and Haitian immigrants. Less commonly in the rest of the South, but more commonly in Louisiana itself, this is attributed to Louisiana having a historic, consistently more ethnically mixed population than the rest of the South. tl;dr: There's regional divides there that an Old Boy Texan like Hank would parrot. (Even if he wouldn't parrot the sentiments which inspired those divides. It's just another example of his culture letting him down.)

he really only ever latched onto things that genuinely appealed to him. for someone as theatrical as he is, this flamboyant manner of presentation would have definitely tickled his fancy. hank tried to influence his behavior throughout the entire series and there were very few things hank wanted him to do that interested him, so he didn't participate with any true enthusiasm. most of the things he latches onto align with his established predilections.

It is but you also have to take into account that Texas is quite large. I believe Hank is from North Texas around the Dallas area. Which is culturally much closer to Oklahoma and Arkansas (don’t tell them I said their similar to Oklahoma). I’m from Houston South East Texas which is very similar to Louisiana, in cuisine and dressing. The only difference is we have more Mexican influence than Louisiana and states across the Mississippi.

Eh, not really. This is an "old South" vs. "new South" distinction. There really aren't many regions that still have "old South" culture (been that way for a while), but the ones that exist aren't like...concentrated on each other or anything.

@selkiara1272 Texas (And Florida) is in the south, but not part of The South. You could be forgiven for calling it a southern state, but traditionally The South stops with Arkansas and goes as far north as Kentucky. Virginia is culturally a Southern state, but politically it's Northern.
