When asked where he was when Thomson hit his home run, Herman Franks said, in 1996, that he was "doing something for Durocher" at the time. Yeah, relaying signs to Sal Yvars who was sitting in the Giant bullpen, who then passed them on to the Giant dugout. -mikenotpaula.

He never admitted the Giants were stealing signs

He said he didn't get a stolen signal on the famous at bat. I believe him. Branca admits in hindsight that he threw the wrong pitch.

He (Thomson) didn't specify what names he called himself, but in another interview, he referred to himself as You Son Of A Bitch. It took until 2001 before someone from the 1951 Giants admitted to cheating by stealing stealing signs by using a high powered telescope set up in the clubhouse at the Polo Grounds.

probably greatest home run ever. what was charley dressen thinking Thompson owned branca hit a homer off him inone of playoff games, plus how many during season.he had Erskine warming up plus many more. the worst decision a mgr could have made

Carl Erskine, along with Thompson, Branca, Durocher, Don Newcombe and Duke Snyder appeared together on a recurring sports-reminiscing series of the 1970's called "The Way it Was" (hosted by Curt Gowdy). Carl recalled that, when the call to the bullpen came from the dugout asking the question, "Who's ready?", the bullpen coach replied, "Erskine just bounced a curve." Carl went on to say something like, "That turned out to be the best curve ball I ever threw!"

@@pianopappy so then Erskine did not want the pressure of facing Thomson? He was a good pitcher, he could have turned things in the Dodgers favor instead of what happened. I'm surprised that's not included in his hindsight.

There was only one out at the time, not two.

Thank you. You are correct. I cut school to watch the game as an 11-year old. Ernie Harwell was doing the play-by-play. But there was no video tape in those days. Thus, Russ Hodges radio play-by-play was dubbed over the film of the game. I just read one account saying Hodges called the game on TV. Not true. I spoke with Ernie about that years later, and he was amused by the fact that his call went up in thin air. Thanks to audio tape, Hodges' call is the only one anyone remembers.

@@bradpalmer7944 The calls of Red Barber and Gordon McLendon were also preserved on audiotape and can be heard on youtube.
