Leo tells us what he told Bobby Thomson before he batted against Ralph Branca in the 9th inning of the final game of the 1951 National League playoff series.

I love the way Mickey says '250' referring to ridiculous short porch at the Polo Grounds and then Hank Aaron chuckles at the joke

The one detail Leo got out of sequence was that Monte Irvin popped out after Mueller’s single…..after Irvin’s out, Lockman hit his double.

Thanks, Paul, for your comment. I just posted the entire show as it aired on the "Decades' broadcast channel about five years ago, minus their commercials. I didn't post it until now; because, I had planned to transfer the original PBS broadcasts from the VHS cassette that I used to record it back in 1979. PBS broadcast it in three half-hour segments, with no commercials--which means the whole program lasted 90 minutes. This rebroadcast version runs only 67 minutes. Apparently, Decades made lots of cuts so they could fit in their commercials. I still hope to digitize the original PBS shows and upload them. However, both of my VCRs are on the fritz;. so we'll have to make do with this for the time being: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l8iRmtJm2b--lIE.html

That Cardinals team rivals the Murderer's row club and I don't care what anyone says. That's when they became the NL's premier squad, really have stayed that way. Fight me Dodger fan.

One of the great trivia questions: Who was on deck when Bobby Thompson hit that home run? Willie Mays.

How the hell did Dressen bring in Branca to face Thomson when Thomson took him yard last time they faced off?
@pianopappy
@pianopappy 4 жыл бұрын
Dodgers right-hander Carl Erskine was on a PBS program hosted by Curt Gowdy, along with Branca, Thomson, Don Newcome, Durocher and some others. On that program, Erskine remembered that he was also warming up in the ninth, along side Branca. When Dressen called the bullpen coach to find out who was ready to come in, the coach said, "Erskine just bounced a curve." Erskine went on to say (with a smile), "That was the best curve ball I ever threw."

A lot better story than the second place Nationals winning the w.s. No divisions, no wildcards. The 1951 Giants won an incredible pennant race and these playoffs were part of the regular season since it was for the National League Pennant. The drama of that pennant race overshadowed the World Series. Willy Mays for the Giants and Mickey Mantle for the Yankees were in their first World Series as rookies. Joe DiMaggio was in his last as he was retiring. Yankees won in 6 but nobody pays any attention to that. What real baseball fans understand and today's "fans" don't understand. As much as I hate to say it, they just don't play a World Series anymore. Not a true blue World Series. They have really cheapened the sport and it takes an eternity to play a game. This game was played in 2 hours and 28 minutes. I looked at the box score. THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!!

@@TheBatugan77 This system is more like Little League than big league. Why don't they just have single game elimination and be done with it ? At least in Little League, they can play in a reasonable time. That is not enough to feed your habit, so they should add more teams like that idiotic wild card game in each league before the playing starts. Always quantity over quality and don't think all of these unnecessary games ruins the quality of the game.
