My absolute favorite DL song! This is a master class in composition and performance. It truly defies comprehension that these 3 immensely talented guys somehow managed to find each other and put together what's arguably the most innovative band in contemporary music.

Jonah was also on the bass @ 7:01. Such talented guys. I'm from Chicago and love blues and jazz. my favorite guitarist is buddy guy. I love these guys. So talented and I feel their music.

I really enjoyed your reaction to this DL tune. I truly enjoy watching musicians as yourself, admire other musicians' true talent. I recently watched Jonah be interviewed by another reactionist, Jeff (Stratele Studios) and Jonah stated that he did not consider himself as a singer. That statement blew my mind. This is a awesome community of musicians reacting to other great musicians. Keep up the good work !!

Yeah, up until they started Dirty Loops, he had only sung choir, basically. He started out as a classical pianist, and switched to jazz part way through high school, and he's also a producer. Someone asked him, in an interview, what he'd pick if he could only sing OR play the keys for the rest of his life. He chose the keys without even missing a beat, so yeah. Mad.

@@lottawiklund8606 Some jazz keyboard players, in my opinion, depend too much on pentatonic scales etc. and they don't sound anything like fusion guitarists, who have more modes etc at their fingertips. Well, Jonah sounds like one of those guitarists except he's playing piano. I think he is better than most piano players

Thanks for the kind words Eric! I appreciate it blows me away at how humble Jonah is. I watched the interviews too. Jeff and I have connected because we realized we both enjoy this group. It is an amazing world with many amazing musicians. I truly truly appreciate what they can do. It is not easy to reach that level.

I just watched another reactor interviewing Jonah, He didn't even realize he could sing like that or compose music like this until he went to music school. So this is still new and exciting for him. He is incredibly humble and he nearly cried when he was told how much of an impact his music had on the interviewer...it was quite moving .. Also says some real interesting stuff on their approach to composing these tracks. Stratelle studio does the interview if you wanna check it out..as for more listening, You should listen to Jonah's solo project, I'd recommend DIAMOND RING which has a different killer bassist and a beautiful guitar solo by Steve Vai... It will take you back to the golden era of 1980s MJ .. just incredible. Also I wish they had made more songs like this funk/gospel style...it just makes you happy and you can't help but move...very fun stuff.

Dang, yes… and also: those fills, everyone of them! And yes to everything else you’ve said. Jonah coming from a background of classical and choir music, it all makes sense. Add to this the incredible skills and musicianship of all these three dudes, and everything works. It just does. Great reaction, thanks 🙏

@@bobcieslinski yes, so true. Also, I guess, having studied music, and many hours of hard work and of rehearsing and jamming together… but still, it takes a certain mind to achieve what they have-. Jonah talks about this and more in his three-part interview with Jeff Castanon from ‘Stratele Studios’.. Found this quite interesting ☺️

Not to disappoint you, but Aron isn't actually singing on this track. That choir is all Jonah. Henrik said this about the writing and arranging of Next To You, in an interview: "That song took forever to write. Aron and I wrote the chorus in 2016. We found it in a drawer and tried a bunch of new verses with it until we got the right one. Then at the last minute, Aron wrote the gospel choir parts. He sent a very funny demo in which he marked where all the different gospel parts come in and what kind of voice they had. When Jonah recorded them, he had a chalkboard with all the different characters in the choir, and he distorted his voice to match each character and so none of them would sound like him. The groove has our typical, swung-funk, triplet feel, but the key is the Bootsy funk formula of having a heavy one to make all the subdivisions after it work. Aron wrote the chorus bass line, which is keyboard bass-like, and it worked best with a combination of fingers and slapping." Complete madness and utterly brilliant! :D

Aron/Henrik singing, Henrik on the kit (etc)...sometime serious, yes other times just foolin' around. But they're jazz school guys and it shows: multi-instrumentalists, great songwriters, and IMO - gifted with virtually unlimited headroom.

Another really great reaction. Wonderful comments infused with your musician's knowledge. Thanks for sharing. FYI: (and I'm sure a few people will let you know this) DL have a great sense of humor and Aron was not actually harmonizing with Jonah-who was actually responsible for all the vocals. Aron was there just for visuals. Also neither Henrik or Aron (I think you were so taken with seeing Henrik on the drums you missed Aron's little turn on the bass) actually played the others instrument on the song. That too was just for fun. If you read the song credits you'll often see humorous little notes that are all indicative of the playful spirit these musicians bring to their craft. Otherwise again, so glad you reacted to "Next to You" though all DL songs are unique this one has -to me at least-an epic almost "Bohemian Rhapsody" kind of vibe. Its also the first song I ever heard by them and needless to say I'm very grateful for that bit of luck. Thanks again.

Ok, first... Aaron is VERY involved in the production and editing of all of DL's videos. IMHO, he doesn't miss a lick in the placement and selection of the shots that make it into the end product. Again, basic ground rules here... you can have one or the other... not both! LOL Next... Stratele Studios, (KZfaq channel) Jeff, proprietor, has done a 1 on 1 with Jonah. He "earned" this by his reaction video of this very same song, in which he was literally brought to tears, and Jonah saw the video of same. Since, they seem to have struck up a friendship. The 3 part interview has the feel of 2 guys just having a conversation. This is just for your entertainment, no reaction necessary... lol P.S. Bitten By The Kitten is still out there waiting for ya!

Great reaction! This song is an absolute masterpiece, and my 8 year olds favorite DL right now. Every one of their songs is so well thought out and technically brilliant. All 3 band members are masterful at their arts, but even better, they seem to have so much fun. And to think I used to believe that good music needed rhythm and lead guitar….. My suggestions would be to look at Coffee Break is over and some of their other “Songs for Lovers” releases as well as Rock You, World on Fire and Breakdown.

1. Yes, the guys are indeed very good. 2. No, you're only watching a video, Henrick isn't playing drums or singing, same with the drummer. 3. What you're hearing is a typical Quincy Jones production, guide vocal by Stevie Wonder. All this music has roots in Quincy Jones' "Back On The Block", and on his productions with Michael Jackson.
