Bobs Hummelbird Aircraft - Plans Built Project
Welcome to the Experimental Aircraft Channel. In this episode we end our visit to Moorseville NC with an interview with Bob Thayer who is building a Hummel Aviation Hummelbird Experimental Aircraft. He will be powering this aircraft with a Half-VW engine sourced from many different plans/suppliers. Follow along as we learn how this project came to be and the journey to build it to this point.

I completed one of these a year ago. I chose the tail dragger configuration only because I like the looks of it. I can understand the apprehension of flying it for the first time, I had to push myself a little to get in and do it. All in all it was a fun pproject and flys well.

Good on him for building his dream plane from scratch. I'd imagine there are more folks building experimental aircraft in the USA than anywhere else. The concept of doing that seems to be well supported by laws and regulations as far as I can see. Australia's vast distances cry out for such an innovative approach, but I think experimental aircraft construction is infrequent.

Not hard to see, considering how you need an inspection and permission to do even relatively basic mods to your car🤷‍♂️

@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I try not miss an episode, always thought the Hummel a bit of an oddity but can't deny it's a legendary design, I was once looking at taking possession of a 'Teenie Two' build which had some Hummel mods but found some corrosion from long term storage that killed the deal, unfortunately, looking at that metal work makes my mouth water for another sheet build - maybe one day in the meantime I have channels like this to keep my passion going

@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel I try not miss an episode, always thought of the Hummel as a bit of an oddity with it's strangely small fuselage and large ugly wings but you can't deny it's legend and the genius of the design. I almost took possession of a very similar 'Teenie Two' project which had some Hummel mods but due to long term storage it had signs of corrosion so I abandoned the deal. Seeing that scratch metal work makes my mouth water for another sheet metal build, such satisfying work.

Very cool and nice little airplane, I was just thinking to built something similar but from composite (based on Burt Rutan and Mike Arnold methods which I discovered recently) and use engine from BMW R-type motorcycle (lightweight and powerful with all accessories like starter and alternator, some models even have 2 spark plugs per head which is also convenient )

If I could build an aircraft, it would definitely be a Hummel. Great little birds! Think I'd be working toward electric power, for the quietest flight achievable. A hang glider holdout - I like it quiet; not even a variometer, they drive me nuts w/ the constant beeping. Just me and the wind.

They took the best parts of the UltraCruiser, the UltraCruiser plus, and some modifications that were tried on the Plus, and created the H5. I built a UC plus tri-gear and it’s a fun plane to fly, but the H5 out performs my plane.

How many elderly American men are killed in home built experimental aircraft each year? They must begin their project in middle age. The project out grows the basement or their first marriage and moves to the garage. Sometime after qualifying for Social Security, the plane nears completion. At this point, with grandchildren lending a hand, the "experimental" get's in the air. Then, grandpa dies on the six o'clock news.

I Flick.... well to a degree I guess I can't argue that. These projects often take a long time and get put on the back burner. Reality... life (people and family) are more important than airplanes and life get's in the way of our passions and dreams. But... often the living takes place in the journey doesn't it? In the meantime.... there is a HUGE amount of fellowship and friendships that are made in the process that many of us would never trade. Truly an awesome community. If you haven't started a project yet and are involved with a chapter building or a maybe a friend that is interested in building at the same time... consider this your invitation! "Just Build It" :-)

I agree. I spent 2 years on the Hummelbird. Retired so had plenty of time. I realized I was in over my head. I spent about $6,000, BUT, my purpose was to learn airframe construction and I did. It was becoming ever more stressful to try to get it right every time in every way. Big personal moment when I said, "This is just a prototype, a learning project, not meant to be flyable." Sad, but a mature moment. I gave the project to a young man who wanted to see how one looked. That would be an enormous help to a builder. I had many hours trying to visualize from the paper plans. I do want to say my set of plans had numerous errors in dimensions, that sure didn't help. Someone said you build two planes, the one you learn on and the one you fly. I am a pilot and owned two production lightplanes. I wanted to learn construction so it was hard, but I learned airplanes and a lot about myself.

I would ask, how many elderly men lose their lives in the restored sports car they have been restoring for the last twenty years? How many young men wind up on the six o'clock news crashing their airplane, car, boat, jetski etc. We all are going to die. You usually have little control over how it happens, so build your airplane, car, boat, whatever and enjoy the experience while you can. It's better than vegging on the couch waiting for the Grim Riper.
