Hummel Aviation, Hummel Bird, Hummel H5 and UltraCruiser all metal ultralight, experimental aircraft
The HummelBird is of all metal construction. Bulkheads are mounted on a simple wood beam, with rivet holes located in flanges of bulkheads, skins are wrapped around and holes drilled back through. Sheet metal is simplest, fastest and most economical way to build an aircraft as Art Rempel has proven with his building a HummelBird and engine in three months building time. Construction is very rugged and is stressed for 6G’s, (5G’s with Witman wing tips).
The complete set of plans contains 26 large (D size) pages with full size templates for bulkheads and wing ribs. A 30 page step by step manual is very complete with all materials listed. Only simple shop tools are required to build the Hummel Bird tri gear or tail dragger. Rigid and shock absorbing gear is shown on the plans. For grass field operation, the shock gear is recommended. Since this is a short build time and quite simple, it is a good project for first for first time builders. Average build time is 1200-1400 hrs if built from scratch. Though a complete kit is not available, al of the welded and many of the complex parts are available.
The 1/2 VW engine has an excellent track record for reliability and fuel economy. Engine plans or complete engines are available.
The FAR Part 103 compliant UltraCruiser
The UltraCruiser was designed as the first all metal ultra light in 1998. First flights were in 2000. First plan sales were in 2001. Intended for first time buiders as well as first time pilots, the UltraCruiser is an easy to build and even easier to fly aircraft.
The design can be built straight from plans up to, and including a full kit. The kit includes predrilled laser cut components. All parts are formed prebent, or welded. Wheels, tires, brakes, harness, and even the seat cushion is included. Wing Spar is pre-assembled. The kit is very complete. Everthing is included to complete the aircraft less the engine, prop, spinner, and instruments.

The H5
Our intention was to build the UC’s good qualities into a “roomier” airframe to accommodate someone over 200# and/or 6 ft. tall. It is intended for 65-85 hp with most being built for a VW conversion engine. Tri-gear or conventional, The H5 is an excellent handling Homebuilt. Great ground handling, excellent visibility, and very efficient.

This particular aircraft N504LD was constructed by my friend Lyle Dickson - who has since passed on. I helped Lyle drive some rivets on this beautiful example of Morry's design skills and watched Lyle scoot around in his creation having fun. I think it may be an appropriate gesture to mention Lyle when you make further videos etc. - he was a gentleman and my mentor at Owens Corning where we worked together for several yrs.

Hi Guys I'm very happy to see Morry's vision live on. I used to fly RC airplanes with Morry in Defiance (propfloppers) back in the late 90's. Morry would talk my head off but I loved every minutes of it. Very intelligent gentleman! Morry was the one to kick start my flight lessons. I did all my training right there at William Co. Took me a year but I got it done. Fast forward 22 years, business has been good to me, I wanting to purchase Columbia 400. I might just pull the trigger on the purchase. (My business is gun accessories....get it!!)

First time to hear why Hummel wanted to design this airplane. Nice to hear that. Leonard Milholland also Team airplane pilot before it crashed that flew with 2 stroke engine.

Beautiful plane. I am going to learn to fly. Not sure if I can pass a medical exam cause I have a lung disease. I do not see what the big deal is. I drive across the country. I want to fly across the country. I am going to prove you can do whatever you want >f you put your mind to it. When I worked I had no time to learn. Now that I'm disabled I have all the time in the world. I'm flying. One way or another. Nice plane guys. Best ultra light I have ever seen.

I NEED one of these in part 103 compliance 😬 just need the basic gauges.. temp, oil pressure, altimeter, air speed and compass.. i have an affordaplane I’m building. I’d love to build one of these like a tiny german war bird paint scheme

Has any one figured out a way to mount a BRS . It would allow you extra weight limit as well as safety. Possibly a blow out on the front of the turtle deck behind the cockpit. The plane would descend nose down but that would be better then nothing.

Get an Austrian Steyr engine. You can get 65 HP with Two Webers.

Thanks for the video but more especially the description. Pity it was so noisy during the interview - I could hear you perfect but Terrys mike was a bid muffled. I would love one of these 103's - ,and I wonder if there are any in Ireland ? I just night have a go at making one !!

I'm in the market for one of these aircraft. Is it possible to install floats for water landing and take off? Or perhaps Bush wheels for landing and take off from sand and gravel bars? Thanks for the video!👍

I like a minimal plane because optimization is king. Cheaper and performs better, what are we talking about. And it's not a huge stretch to have straddled tandem seating. Takes very little cabin space with legs on the side of a narrow seat back. Some cricri traits there, I would redesign. It's not 1980 anymore. Reclined seat, minimal canopy, few pieces of sleek fiberglass or carbon, single piece wing. And half a VW engine just seems very self inflicted. Why not a bit of irony and use one of rotax' 10x cheaper good engines not meant for planes. They have quite the range.

Dan Frederiksen Geesh...!!!..You "Arm Chair Designers and Engineers"...Dude, Not ev'ry one's got access to million dollars Bank acct and a million sq. ft of shop or Hangar space!!!!...Most dudes have just enuff to let thier dreams become a reality and not pissed off the wife/GF with what she gonna call " Your Toy".....Plus, w/ part 103, it has to come in at 254lbs...No more...and, If you add all what you say, which some guys cant even figure out how to change a flat tire or WANT to, then, who's building any of these, Huh ???... People always on here saying..Add this, Add that ..I would put this here, I would add that there.... Well, Its tons of Free designer pics and plans out there you can modify...Plus, there's the 'ol noggin' where you can one off something so unique to you, You can call it the "..𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙛 𝙈𝙓 1...And you will have the only one...And let your designs die w/ you so no body else can build one like some dudes have done....!!!!!!...Cheers....
