This is an older unit that's in a locked compound within our property.
Many of the newer units have a removable insulated fire wall between the door and the live terminations.
I should that some stick work is approved for live fronts. A few examples would be: a simple potential check, amp check or even phasing checks.
We no longer install live front equipment of any kind in our area.

Ill never forget. Growing up my father was a substation technician. His bid was for replacing earthing circuits to substation structures after crackheads would break in and cut the copper out and then encase it all in steel strut down to the grade. I was maybe 10 and he took me to work one day. We get to the station and he explained to me where to be and where to not be. I asked “why?” And no sooner did I say that, I hear a zap and a smoldering carcass of a bird lands at my feet. He shrugs and says, “thats why”. Then I watched him grab the hot sticks to short the 3 phases and neutral to ground so they could safely work and weld on the circuit. 338kv was the largest disconnect he worked with 😮

Our aluminum plant electricians took a class at the Bonneville Power Administration (part of the US Dept of Energy). BPA was testing 1 million volt trasmission lines. To walk under those lines was like having an entire ant hill crawling over your skin. The electromagnetic field was incredible. You could hold a florescent tube in your hand and it would glow brightly. High voltage is something to respect.

Understanding you're in Canada, the general engineering of these systems and components are extremely similar to standard US practice. As a Com/Res sparky of 8 yrs, I can definitely say that I'll be going to school to learn this and eventually move on to being an on-call HV primary service tech as yourself. Linemen run the damn world! ❤

Almost 30 years ago I had to assist a electrician with pulling the main power feed from a pad mount trans to building thru underground piping. The power company came out to opened it up and covered the hot lines coming with those rubber pads. I don't remember any divider and could feel static electricity the whole time.. I am not ashamed to say I was sweating bullets. Being that close to the live lines even when covered.. Due to the transformer supplying several homes and part of the sport center in the high dollar neighborhood the power company wasn't going to de energize the transformer until the were going to connect the power to the new building...

One of my instructors was a Navy electricity/electronics man. He also dealt with the base owned poles. One July 4th, after completing their work on a line. Two of the crew decided to throw firecrackers from the top of the tower. One lived. The other got to close to the primary well throwing. The lump lived for two days in the hospital. Respect for the lines and safely must be practiced at all times.

Considering every NEMA cabinet with hardware bolted to the backplane is asking for you to trip over the bottom of the door lip to have your face plaster against one of the bare pieces of metal carrying juice from one of the phases that just happens to not have an acrylic cover over it. I always keep one foot back and always try to lean backwards just slightly when in a cabinet full of hungry flesh-smokin' electrons!

In Europe all the transformers look the same, either pole mounted or ground mounted. The ones on the ground are hidden in small buildings or cabinets, a which have two doors. Behind one of them is the transformer itself and the high voltage connections, all exposed. It's often called the transformer chamber. They can't get in there with the power on. Behind the second door is the low voltage distribution stuff, so if anything goes wrong there they can enter that part of the cabinet without dropping the primary.

Curious to know why head, and face flash gear are not required when the equipment seems to have a fault. Seems that in the case of an arch potential opening the containment wall would make you the easiest path to ground?
@Bobsdecline
@Bobsdecline Жыл бұрын
I'm the event of a flash, it's not typically being a path to ground that's a concern (as you're not in contact with the wires) but the intense heat from the flash. As this unit sits for dozens of years it's extremely unlikely that a fault would occur at the exact moment that you're there. If we're there as a result of trouble of any sort, we would de-energize the unit before even opening the doors. In some case where switching is allowed with live front equipment, face shield and even a "bomb suit" is required. You'll typically see this in switch gear enclosures.

I’ve only ever worked on dead front transformers. How do you move a phase to stand-off/parking on a live front? Do you have to de-energize at riser pole/switch gear? Love the videos!
@lewy1
@lewy1 Жыл бұрын
A lot of them have 3 bushings per phase with the centre having a fused link feeding the transformer and the 2 outside are the in and out on a loop. The barrels are very similar to a cut out on a pole.

Will a live front pad mount only be found within the confines of a substation? So clearly there are various levels of access to the things you do . We’ve seen you enter substation control rooms and alter things , seen you change things in the high voltage bus work. You’ve spoke of things you can not do in a bucket, while doing things right beside that don’t appear terribly more technical What are the assess levels - how are they denoted and how do you earn a higher level?

A CAT IV meter only allows for up to 1,000 VAC. The probes alone on a meter that can test 12,400 P-P would look like 3/8" bolts. I don't think I've ever seen a handheld meter that can safely test for absence of voltage at this force of electrons!
