This is the story of the most popular cars of the 1980’s based on sales figures. If you grew up during the '80s, these are the cars that you saw most often on your neighbors' driveways or rolling down their streets.
We tend to think of the most popular cars as the fastest or coolest cars like Lamborghinis or Corvettes, but we often forget that car enthusiasts aren't the only ones who buy cars. In general, car buyers don't prioritize speed above everything else; they're more concerned with the balance of practicality and cost along with speed. The following are the most popular American cars in the 1980s based on unit sales. ENJOY OUR VIDEO OF THE TOP 80'S CARS!
#10 is the 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with 331,179 units sold.
#9 is the 1989: Honda Accord with 362,707 units sold
#8 is 1982: Ford Escort - 337,667 units sold
7- 1988: Ford Escort - 381,330 units sold
#6 1984: Chevrolet Cavalier - 383,752 units sold
#5 - 1987: Ford Escort - 392,360 units sold
#4 - 1986: Chevrolet Celebrity - 408,946 units sold
#3 - 1985: Chevrolet Cavalier - 422,927 units sold
#2 - 1981: Oldsmobile Cutlass - 454,188 units sold

I'm surprised the 1986 Ford Taurus didn't make this list. The Olds Cutlass doesn't surprise me though, they were everywhere in the 80's. I had a 87 Buick Regal for a brief period in the late 90's and just loved the ride and power of that car! Mine was a Limited with a small V8 and just about every option one could throw at it. Those plush leather seats are about the softest seats I've ever sat in. I should have kept it.

A salute from Bogotà DC, Colombia. Very interesting sales list, back in the days when GM was real big, seriuos contender. by the way, I had a 1984 Chevy Celebrity, assembled here, with CKD compontents at GM Colmotores manufacturing plant. And I could see by myself, why the model reached the top sales records. Good gas mileage, plenty of power from the 2.8 liter V6, and superb 4 speed manual transaxle, big and comfortable interior, quiet ride and very low engine noise inside, the features I recall the most. Only produced between 1982/1985, low sales due the high government taxes we pay here. That killed the car popularity. Thanks for video, and all GM fans want to see the corporation gettin`big one more time.

I was born in 1982. I saw tons of Escorts and G-Body Olds all over the place. Cavaliers were also a very common sighting. There's 1 white late 80s Cavalier sedan that I sometimes see on the busy commercially developed street I live near. It's in excellent condition. 2 twins I'd see tons of back in the 80s were the Aries/Reliant. I like the sportier, smoother refreshed styling the Escort got in the late 80s. The GM G-Body is one of my favorite body styles of all-time. Like that of the Fox Body Mustang, they are excellent cars to make into sleepers and are bound to jump in value in the next few years.

@ 28 years in age in 1972, I ordered a fully loaded 1972 Cutlass Supreme. The car had everything the factory would put on a Cadillac. I opted for the 4-bbl 350 V8. I kept that car until August 1975 and ordered a1976 Cutlass Supreme Brougham with everything. An 8000 dollar car! The 72 I gave to my dear mom. The 76' I kept until 1990 and I gave it to my brother. I put 563 thousand miles on the engine and trans and decided to get a complete rebuild on both. I purchased a 1979 Cutlass Supreme in 79' and I still have that car. In 1999, I yanked the 305 out and installed a 75' model 350 V8, and the turbo 400 tranny from a wrecked Olds Vista Cruiser wagon. Both engine and tranny were completely rebuilt. I currently have a 1974 Cutlass Supreme that was in storage for approximately 30 years. The car had 53,333 miles on it when I purchased it from a classic car website four years ago. I hate like hell that Oldsmobile went out of business, as they sold more cars in the 70's to the middle 80's. My brother in-law worked for Oldsmobile in Detroit and Lansing Michigan during that time and he told me that during those years, Oldsmobile was the experiment car for Cadillac. What ever went on an Oldsmobile was put on a Cadillac. The best Oldsmobile 350 V8 engines were manufactured from 1968 thru 1976. Those engines were better built and could take great punishment and still hold up. The engines in my Cutlasses never leaked not one ounce of liquid. They were just really good engines. Thanks to every one.

Excellent and informative video as always. I remember in the early 80s in drivers ed they used a couple of cutlasses and regals with the steering wheel and brakes on both sides. Both really nice riding cars I think one of the Oldsmobiles was a diesel as well. Loud but still very nice. Not many people in the class so you got to drive every day. Learned a lot both about cars but driving as well. Shame in most places drivers ed isn't offered any more. But still really nice cars anyway.

Safe to say Oldsmobile OWNED the 70s-80s. It really sucks GM top brass started cutting corners in a effort to streamline product lines. I don’t remember which GM executive said “we’re already the number one automaker in the world, why are we “wasting” (🙄) money on product design/testing”? They started designing cars with more interchangeable parts, similar looks, all in a effort to cut costs. And look what happened? Most of the cars lost that distinction and uniqueness, people started thinking “why pay more for a Buick/Oldsmobile/whatever when I can buy the same car marketed as a cheaper chevy? It wasn’t too long before that thinking migrated to the foreign cars, combined with the lousy quantity control hurt by the “cheaper in better” way of thinking. You don’t become the world biggest automaker by accident. A lot of the great car guys of the 50-early 80s were retiring, the new auto executives were way to eager to make a name for themselves by ignoring what had worked for decades and trying new things. Nothing wrong with innovation, just don’t forget what got you on top.

I love every word of what you just said. It really is a shame what GM did, they ran themselves into the ground. My family only has two cars (An 84 Chevy G30, and a 95 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera) I'll call myself a GM person all day everyday. But don't think I'll ever buy their newer garbage. I've seen old GM's, old Ford's, Old Chrysler, and new of each. I can say in my opinion the old GM's we're on top. My 95 Olds is an absolute tank, that will show no mercy. it's got 243K Miles (As of writing this) and has been the families Daily driver since 2010. Last October it's transmission failed, (The Reverse Reaction Drum had a fault out of the factory. It just takes an extremely long time for it to develop) We rebuilt that transmission, and just about almost rebuilt everything else on that car since owning in. My point is, I know that car inside and out, I know what it's worth. Sad thing is that most GM Vehicles were worth that. And really really really aren't anymore. Most US vehicles just aren't. What a shame. The other thing I wanted to point out, is Oldsmobile was always ahead of it's time, Not only was the company the first to accomplish a lot of 'firsts' in automotive history. (such as the first speedometer, the first single peace windshield, the first automatic transmission, and most importantly, the first mass produced model. Which is generally mistakenly titled to Ford, when Ford had the first mass produced model on an assembly line) Another great example of olds being ahead of their time, is their last concept cars, in 2001. Oldsmobile released two vehicles, a yellow convertible (Which was the more popular one) and a dark blue sedan. Both vehicles would've fit in amazingly in appearance, in today's vehicle line ups. But... I suppose in the end, it might've been better that Oldsmobile was pushed out, before they name could be destroyed by today's junk. At least Today, Oldsmobile is looked at as a legend that is missed, and not another pos rebadged Chevy that GM just can't help themselves to squat out. Lastly. Sorry about my rambles. I got carried away.

I find it REALLY hard to believe that neither the IROC Camaro nor any of Fox body Mustangs were on this list, Both of those cars were EVERYWHERE, you couldn't spit in the wind without hitting one or both of them. While in high school I worked at my local Chevy/GMC Dealership and we couldn't keep them, as soon as they rolled in off the truck they were gone. I never saw one that sat on the lot more than 3 or 4 days, the local Ford Dealership was right across the street and the Mustangs from what I could tell were the same way. I can't remember seeing a Mustang sit on there lot for more than a week. I'm not surprised about the Cutlass being on here so many times though, The other dealership in town was a Pontiac/Olds dealership and they were very popular too. I really can't remember seeing all that many cavaliers or escorts though.

My dad had an old, but mint Chevrolet Caprice with the diesel. It was a terrible engine indeed, but it held fine for 6 years so dad could economically commute to and from college and work and when he graduated it started coming apart. Well we pulled a 454 out of a wrecked truck, gave it a cam and intake and carb and dad got parts from the family wrecking yard and we finished the change over in a few weekends of work. After that he had a dual exhaust system put in it and drove it all of 3 weeks before he got an offer on it. He took the second offer and got $4200 for it. I got to drive it once, delivering it for the new owner. I was 15. The kid was 18 and it had far more power than he needed. I told hi. To find a beater for winters and to take it easy because it's too easily excited and will spin the tires and gas gauge. He got into a real minor incident that needed front suspension work but I had a Pic of it show up last year and it looks like new, but now has 4 wheel disc brakes and new air conditioning. All windows are mirror tint and the guy told me on fb that he scared himself a couple times but took my advice. It's his pride and joy after his family and he's since helped me find a pair of straight bumpers for a car I'm working on when I can. Amazing how a few years turned a kid I thought was a dick into a decent guy I chat with a few times a month. Cars rule. Especially old ones!

Those big ass American cars we produced in the 60's, 70s was the reason why the Japanese came and invaded the market. They took a few across the water, disassembled them and made them better. We were making them with planned obsolescence and only kept them for three years and traded because we knew the problems would start. I know. I had a 1970 Mercury Marquis that gave me so many problems it's much to mention in this text. I haven't bought a Ford built product since. It caught on fire on my way to work one morning and I left it on the street and caught a cab. FORD - F ound O n T he R oad D ead !

I was 15 when i got the car, had i known how i would feel about the car today i would have never sold it.

I knew Cutlass Supremes were extremely popular back in the 70’s and 80’s, but never thought the 1980 would be be the most popular car of the 80’s. That is pretty cool. I still have my parents 1980 Cutlass Supreme with only 38K miles on it and It has been babied its whole life. Love the G bodies. Great video.

I wish to God I'd bought an '81 Diesel Escort when they first came out but I didn't have the money. My next pick would have been an '82 Diesel Celebrity. That was back when Diesels were worth having, not just for super mileage but for lower diesel fuel prices. Today, they're nothing but a pain in the ass and diesel costs more. No advantage now.

I took a class from a guy who worked on the Cavalier campaign. He said GM's research (and his agency's) showed the Cavalier had ZERO benefits over any of the competition - so technically there was no legitimate reason to buy the car. But, of course, never underestimate the American public and their love of mediocrity. Of course, the horrible reliability of these vehicles and other American products on the list just cemented how the Asian and German rivals were going to be dominant.

@@filthyanimal874 Um, Mercedes and BMW were reliable (depending on model) in the 1980s. I had a used 1984 325e that was proof positive, and my 2000 528i that was on autobahn had zero problems. These days German cars are barely able to make it to the warranty end before dying.
