त्यस बेला बौद्ध धर्मको प्रख्यातिले बौखलायका हिन्दुहरु जसरी भयपनी बौद्ध धर्म सिध्याउने मनस्थितिमा रहेको बेला आदि शंकराचार्यले बौद्ध विद्वानहरुलाइ शास्त्रार्थ गरि जितेको भए शास्त्रार्थ गरेको विषय त्यसमा गरेका प्रश्न त्यस्को उतर सहितको ठुलो ग्रन्थ लेख्थ्यो होला किनकि त्यस बेला सम्म भारतबर्ष मा राजाहरु अधिकान्स हिन्दु थिए । त्यो त गरेन। त्यसको अर्थ शास्त्रार्थ गरेकै छैन । गरेको भए मिलिन्द्र प्रश्न जस्तै ग्रन्थ हुनु पर्ने हो त्यसबेलाको प्रचलन अनुसार । गुरुले भन्नु भए जस्तै सेना लगायर बुद्ध धर्म मासेको हो। गुरुले अस्पस्त कुरालाइ स्पष्ट गरि व्याख्या गरिदिनु भयो ।साधु साधु!साधु

Thanks Rinpoche Rana Ratnashree for explaining this historical fact about Adi Shankaracharya and his role in suppressing the buddhist religion in India by the use of violent means. Buddhism faced a great setback in second century BCE following the atrocities committed by Pushyamitra Sung (who had established the brahmin Sung dynasty) against buddhists. However, it somehow managed to survive and even flourished in the succeeding periods thanks to the support extended to buddhist monks and viharas by kings like Kaniska, Harsabardhan of Kannauj and Pal kings of Bengal. There were great centres of buddhist learning such as Nalanda Maha vihar. The famous Chinese Buddhist Scholar Xuanzang studied at Nalanda for several years under Venerable Silabhadra in the 7th century CE. There was a strong tradition of religious discourses and debates at that time. King Harsabardhan had organized a great assembly of scholars participated in by Hindu, Jain and Buddhist scholars in which the visiting scholar Xuanzang was also invited to participate. Given the prevailing intellectual environment at that time it is highly improbable that any philosophical debate in 8th century CE between Shankaracharya and Buddihist scholars would have passed unnoticed. Infact historical records show that Shakaracharya had debated with Hindu philosophers of different schools the most notable being his debate with Mandana Mishra of Mithila who was a disciple of Kumarila Bhatta (purba mimamsa school). After losing in debate Mandana Mishra acknowledged the superiority of Shankara's vedanta doctrine and became his disciple.
