Nice cutting. Out of curiosity which Katana are being used in this video? The last one looks like the Oni but I can't tell.

just for reference to Mtntow ... i own 4-5 Hanwei katanas Never had a single problem with any of them. Or hanwei yet. It could be the earlier blades had production issues, but the $200 plus ones have been great so far....

Question. When you actually cut with the sword, do you hold it with the classical japanese sword grip (where the thumb is beneath the index finger) or do you hold it with a hammer grip?

The hammer grip is considred improper grip in Japanese Martial Arts while it's acceptable in Western martial arts so it's depends on you, the cutting methods of the longsword and japanese sword are almost the same ( Also hammer grip is not recommened in Western Longsword because it reduced your reach and it could cause wrist injury). With either grip, the power comes from the leverage of your hand pinkies apply on the handle and the full extension of the hands throughout the cut + body movement

There is preoperative grip it's called Tenouchi. There's an angle Lakemont where alms align and where the web f or thumb creates a v on the top of the tsuka. Grip is important too. The left had provides power and the right guides the sword. You want to hold it in a firearm manner.

(cont) It's fairly disappointing as well because they carry some stuff that no one else seems to have. In the end, I do like my daisho (tactical) but i'm not sure if its simply because it's mine, the mods I've done or the fact I haven't had swords in quite some time. I just wish they knew the products, i.e. edge type, hardness, fittings and etc. or at least made an effort to figure them out and treat customers properly. You'd have to watch my review on the tactical daisho to understand.

In regards to Hanwei if you get it through Bugei Trading Company you will have none of the problems that you mention. As to footwork you will have to be specific. Perhaps personally demonstrating footwork that you like would be good.

I think I was referring to the start/stop method but maybe you are just slowing it down for demonstration purposes? I forget i left this comment, forgive my rudeness. I think I was just pissed off about spending 500$ on swords with so many issues and the video is on the hanwei channel. Either way, I wasn't trying to say I have some superior technique, just a preference for fluidity. As for hanwei, it would take a lot for me to buy from a company a 2nd time that doesn't follow up or have info.

At risk of being dense, what's the shorter sword for?

The wakizashi or tanto is used as a "back-up" or second sword for some cuts.

Depends on style but it's mostly used as side arms in peace time self defense while the katana is the main weapon. Some styles like Niten Ichi Ryu taught how to use both swords on each hands because Musashi believed if you carried 2 blades, why not use both.

Good tip on the elbows but honestly, I really dislike your leg work, unless it is a medical condition (in which case, my apologies). Not that you care or it matters. Now the reason I care. I understand you are the man when it comes to selling swords. Please explain to me why Hanwei is selling products that come with chipped blades, cracking habakis and numerous other problems?! Sorry if I sound rude but anybody else (ask hanwei) would be getting my not so respectful side.
