Objectification and body image are prevalent sources of poor mental health. Dr. Lindsay Kite, based on her own research and experiences, describes how body obsession can be turned into body positivity. Lindsay Kite is a scholar and advocate of positive body image. She holds a master’s and Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Utah, specializing in the study of media representation of women and female body image. In 2009, she co-founded the nonprofit Beauty Redefined along with her identical twin sister, Lexie Kite, and began giving presentations for schools, treatment centers, religious congregations across the U.S. on the power of recognizing, rejecting and resisting harmful messages about bodies and women’s worth in popular culture. Through engaging online education and activism, Lindsay and Lexie’s work reaches millions of people online each year where they share the core message of Beauty Redefined: Women are more than just bodies. See more. Be more.Lindsay’s passion for promoting and teaching body image resilience is both an academic and personal one. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It makes me think about "body neutrality" which makes more sens to me. I mean : why should you be proud or ashamed of your body ? Your body is not something that should be used to attack or reassure your self esteem. It's what makes you alive, what allows you to hug your friends, kiss your lover, eat delicious foods or enjoy an intense sport session. It's not a piece of meat which would be supposed to make you get rejected ou valued by society.

I struggle with the concept of body neutrality. I understand disconnecting self-worth from your looks. self-esteem is about looks. self-worth is about knowing you are valuable no matter the size, skin colour, hair and any other external criteria. But how can you love something if you feel neutral towards it? I take pride in all those things you've listed: enjoying food, making love, taking a walk. I've started making healthier choices for my body out of love for it because I decided it deserves better than the constant negative talk and abuse.

@@allisondixley669 unfortunately, I am "stick thin" compared to many and it hurts just as much and causes just as much distress and fyi, I gave birth to two 9lb. babies. What is your issue when you get a kick out of pushing your view onto others even if it distressing them.. think about your own mindset and what this says about you.. why do you get a kick out of this? Why does this make you feel powerful?? You have more to worry about than someone who carries more weight than society deems acceptable..

The story about the girl who was self-harming was so sad. I cried hearing she got better. Bless anyone who has ever felt the way she did just because their body doesn’t fit societies’ unrealistic expectations of beauty and perfection. I’ve struggled with these feelings my whole life too. I didn’t realize I was “self objectifying” because I’ve done it all my life, it is such an engrained habit. You are soooo much more than your body to so many people. I’m trying to remind myself of this fact too. We are more than our bodies. ♥️♥️♥️

I still want to be tall sometimes but you have inspired me to try to lose weight because I love my body and I want to take care of it! You have helped me see that being short does not make me any less of a person and thank you for helping me see my own self objectification. My height does not define me (and I can't even control that!) and you have helped me recognize that! Hey!! Rather than focusing on loosing weight try checking out "healthy at every size". Eating wholesome and nutritional food and moving your body is super important, but the focus should never be weight loss. It should be doing what's right for your body and treating kindly. What better way to be kind to yourself than cooking food you love that fulfills your nutritional needs, so your body can keep doing the important work of of keeping you alive!?!?! PS: you go with your badass self and play with hair and your makeup. What better way to be kind to yourself than saying: yeah I look good, but you know what would be fun? Spending some time looking at my beautiful face in the mirror and playing with my appearance. I'm so glad you found this at 16! I wish you a most pleasant journey in living in your body!!!

Weight loss doesn't mean you won't be eating nutritional meals. The whole point in losing weight isn't just for vanity but to have a healthier lifestyle. Why are you saying the focus shouldn't be weight loss when healthier and nutritious meals should have you losing weight, anyway? Also, to you, Lizzy, I understand where you're coming from. I'm two inches taller than you and I've wanted to be taller as well. But after a tragic time in my life, I ate due to my unstable emotional state and gained weight. I was 30lbs overweight and lost it all and more. Now, I'm 125lbs and don't eat nearly as much as I used to, but I eat more veggies, fruits, lean meats that aren't fried but baked. It's all about motivation and discipline. Do what you need to do for your body and you'll come to love every curve and contour after shedding the weight.

It is good to accept things you cannot change, but weight is changeable and obesity is caused by addiction and the body positivity movement enables this addiction.. in this case to processed carbs...its akin to having an alcoholic positivity movement. It is not their fault...it is the environment, caused by Big Food. I myself am in this boat, and trying to do keto. And it is dangerous, my friends in their 50s have suffered so much from this body positivity movement which they have embraced...they will die early due to this, most of their family has already died early due to this, a brother at aged 40, mother aged 60, and their husbands and kids are suffering and feel helpless. It's terrible to watch. The shame and anxiety you feel is your body screaming at you to take action.

Yes, I know I say this while I hold onto the constrictive adjective "chubby," but this is a safe-zone for me, and it helps me retain the idea of trying to achieve fitness without the focus being on losing weight. I even am contemplating how I can go beyond the idea of a fitness coach/instructor/dancer having a particular body. I really think our fascination with being a certain weight is a relatively new trend. Invention of cameras to the popularity of Twiggy to Heroine chic, it grew in popularity... etc. I want to step out of the mold.

This is such an inspiring talk! Iam not a fan of the bodypositive and health at every size community at all. In my experience, they are not inclusive at all (you have to be obese enough) and I think they try to normalize dangerous things! That said, I am a fan of loving your bodyand the skin your in (and thus automatically wanting the best for your body) and having a sense of self worth! Your body doesn't define you as a person! If more people with a similar attitude like you spoke out much more people would fell more comfotable in their bodies and would have a healthier body and a healthier mind.

This is true. Your value to society is not your body, it's what you actually do. If all you do is looking at yourself and obsessing over yourself, what can you actually do for the world?

Swimming was the only sport I could do without pain as a kid. I love it so much. But I have not gone swimming in forever because of my self- harm scars. I miss it so much.

Go back to swimming. If you miss it, just go for it! Chances are that it will be as bright as for the woman talking in this video. Scars are a difficult thing to show, so I get why it is hard to do so, but I hope you have had the courage or will have the courage to go swimming again. You are not an ornament ♥

The real problem is carb addiction. No amount of trying to fight your thinking about this will help that root cause. Big Food has us hooked on cheap plentiful processed carbs coupled with being sedentary.
