In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. There's a push to ban photoshop use in ads that would make them fraudulant. I am in full support.

I do have fears that it will make it worse tho..... What if they realise that they can't use photoshop anymore, and force the models to starve themselves instead, so as to achieve what they wanted earlier before the photoshop ban....The mindset might be a bigger issue than photoshop itself.

I can't count the number of guys I stopped dating over the years because they expected me to put out on the first, second, third date...like no...I don't care what society has taught you to expect, but my body is not available for any Tom, Dick or Harry who asks. She's right about these kinds of ads being dangerous in normalizing certain types of attitudes.

true. society rn makes you think you're weird for not putting out immediately. i mean that's fine if a girl truly wants to, but i spent a long time feeling like that was just 'the way it was' without realizing i truly don't like that and don't want that for my relationships. it sucks our culture is making us feel so pressured.

@@cloudproud729 sometimes guys get obsessive/overly attached very quickly bc they lack intimate friendships with other guys and don't have as much 'practice' with knowing what real intimacy/love is. which is interesting bc girls are the ones who get the rep for being clingy. but i've had guys get obsessive, controlling, expecting 'more' of me and for me to prioritize them, after like a few weeks or a month and i feel like i hardly know them. it usually results in ghosting them bc they feel like this weird person i hardly know getting obsessed w me. i'm sure some girls do this to guys to, but it's a pattern that pushes girls away. at least in my personal experience lol. srry for the essay just tryna explain this phenominon a bit..

She is a very good speaker, though she has also had a lot of practice giving this speech. I saw her give this speech at my high school four or five years before this Ted Talk was recorded. The "just two inches" joke got a big laugh from the all female audience.

What I got from this TED Talk is that the sexualization starts with children, then from that point forward sex, sex sex, is shoved in everyones face 24/7. It is too casual, treated with very little reverence as it should be revered, valued and more private than it is. I'm only 1 woman. I can't change the world nor can I save babies from sexualization. I can hold tight to my self respect, morals & values.

Brenda B Well said. It is important to show example. Children and adults do sense when someone has a different attitude and they can be inspired by it. It is my case too even though it took me 25 years I finally figured it out and now have much healthier mindset. Let´s spread healthy messages of selfrespect as well as respect for others.

@Mahta the Great You're welcome. There are many women all over the world who have taken a stand against the damaging hook up culture. Against the damage of the friends with benefits attitude. It doesn't benefit anyone. it skews the attitudes of guys toward women, objectifying all women thereby lowering his chances of having a truly loving relationship later in life. Unplanned pregnancies, STDs, emotional pain. Pain all around for all concerned. Better to stick to morals, values, self respect for guys and women.

Excellent speech. The add with the breasts horrified me once I realized it just bashed every kind of breasts out there, thus with the potential to make every female upset about her particular breasts. D: That is absolutely horrible.

+Cherabreena If a woman got upset about her breasts due to some stupid ad, she is too much of a moron to be worried about when it comes to her thinking lol I can't even come up with a number of ads that I have seen that portray men as disgusting idiots, and just laughed it off. Nothing has the potential to make every female upset about her particular breasts because females are not a monolithic group of thin skinned idiots. Plus, plenty of women actually love their breasts. No ad is going to change that.

+Артём Водоватов - First of, I did not say it makes every woman feel shitty about her breasts. I specifically said it had POTENTIAL to make every female [with this or that shape of breasts] feel upset or flawed. It isn't a question about this one single ad out of context, but what this ad and countless others add up to. But to respond to your statement; I am well aware that many women love their tits and are unaffected by ads like these, yet, it does not change the fact that this ad is horrible and degrading, and to many (women in particular) is not funny. Shaming natural variety, in this case tits, is unproductive, idiotic and damaging to many who do not fit into whatever idealistic aesthetics currently dictated by society (perky, firm, round plastic tits, most often). But I digress... Also, I have not once said men are or are not affected by the same issues, so I don't know why you brought men into the conversation, but now you mention it, then yes, it is just as disgusting to degrade men/kids/whatever in ads as well. Also, calling gullible women morons is just incredibly insensitive and uncalled for. Just because you find degrading TV ads funny, does not mean others do. Please reach beyond your personal bubble and realize people with different sensitivities than you, do exist. Thanks. :)

+Артём Водоватов - You say such ads have no effect on you, therefor you disagree with their potential to be harmful to others. That logic is extremely flawed and unfortunately that's not how things work. Just because they don't affect you does not magically translate to them not affecting anyone else. Ads and other media like this are being criticized for a legitimate reason. It's fine that you won't or are unable to understand that some people are highly affected by these kinds of ads, but it does not change the fact that people who are affected exist, independent of your experience and opinions. Even if the affected people suffer from some other issues of low self-esteem or what have you, it doesn't change the fact that ads like this can be highly triggering, especially for such people. There is no point of making an ad like this in the first place. They could have made it appealing to their female audience in much more positive and effective ways, instead of being rude and criticizing their target group. I also find it quite odd that you link insecurities with low or lack of intelligence. So if you one day wake up feeling half-assed about yourself in some way, shape or form, does that mean you just had a significant drop in intelligence?

I am saying no ad has the power to hurt every woman. Not all women are such delicate little flowers that need constant coddling and approval. I know there are stupid people out there, and people with persecution complexes, and people with serious mental issues that might be genuinely feel hurt from seeing an ad. We don't need to cover the world in plastic wrap and censor ourselves to cater to or appeal to the delicate sensibilities of people like that. These people had no reason to run this ad? Yes they did. To sell their product. Just because other people don't like the ad is no reason to take it down though. Or try to appeal to those delicate little flowers. Don't like the ad? Don't buy from them. Feel "triggered" by the ad? Go seek mental help. Don't blame the ad. If we start censoring ourselves or others to cater to people that find things offensive, well congratufuckinglations. You basically just turned the world into an amorphous blob. Then to address your closing strawman, no. I do not link insecurity with lack of intelligence. I find basing your self-esteem on some advertisement you find offensive a pretty damn good sign of lacking intelligence, or needing to seek mental help instead of trying to get the ad taken down or censoring people, or expecting people to cater to your delicate sensibilities. BTW, I find you saying the ad has the potential to make every female upset about her particular breasts very offensive. I find your use of the word "shitty" in your reply to me very rude. Pardon, let me rephrase myself so you understand what I am saying regarding the point of the add: the thing I meant is there are BETTER ways to advertise and sell a product, than how they went about it. I did not once say they should not advertise their product at all, so please don't put words in my mouth or imagine I say things I am not saying. I am glad you seem to at least comprehend that some people are affected and that was all I really wanted to come across. Anywho, at this point this "discussion" has run way off track and is just going to run in circles as we're mostly talking past each other. A shame. Have a nice day.

It's been 6 YEARS since this TedTalk and things have only worsened. Ads, tv, and media are all terribly sexualizing and often cause violent, abusive attitudes in men, and most of the time self-conscious, anxious, depressed attitudes in girls and women.

Can I ask where it has worsen? , there are countless empowerment movies, films, ads, scholarships, and more. I do agree that there are still things that do sexualize and cause violent abusive attitudes but to say the situation has worsened is questionable. Out of all her points in her talk, I'm really glad she touched on women of color. Women in the media get a lot of backlash for their bodies, and are seen as objects, but women of color are just not seen. Yes, you can name a few ads where the star was a WOC, but not many. It just doesn't happen. Even though she just touched upon it, I'm glad she recognized that we are being oppressed within our gender group. I wonder if there could be a more in depth talk about WOC's that focuses us in the media, or just people of color in general. Food for thought.

Being a WOC you know better than I do what WOC go through! for sure! I am in complete solidarity with you! I've read my history. I know what's up! If you'd like to watch more Jean Kilbourne, where she spends a good deal of time dealing with just WOC issues, you can torrent her Killing us Softly series. I think they also are available on youtube here. Do you need me to find them for you? I bend over backwards to help people that want to help themselves. OBVIOUSLY, the 3rd one is the best one. Being the most recent. But all of them contain valid points not repeated between versions. SO seeing all 3 is a good idea. I have them all. They are AMAZING! 40 years of work is not a piss in the pot!! Have you thought about opening a blog or youtube and talking about your experiences as a woman of colour in a profoundly white supremacist culture? Forgive my ignorance if you've already done so. (And hook me up with links please! haha) So many people of all colours could benefit from reading the lived experiences of people of colour. I encourage you to "giver" as it were, haha, in writing or talking about your lived experiences. Your stories are important!

You should look up the documentary "Dark Girls" I think it was shown on the OWN channel but you may be able to find it online, it goes into effects media has on WOC and the media standards for WOC being feature in the magazines (light skin, straight hair, etc.)

So you think the fact that the media purposely promote fake perfect images, force women to feel insecure about themselves to sell and materialize women are not true, that it's all just "false victimhood narrative of poor innocent females"? If someone pick up any female magazines, show it to a teenager and see if it affects their self-esteem, you'll see what the video means. It’s the same with body hair. Body hair on women (wich is completely natural and does NO harm) is so taboo, that even in razor-commercials the model is shaving an already shaved leg!! When I was around sixteen, I was realy ashamed of the hair, that grew on my lower armes and shaved it of. I was so relieved, when I talked to my friends at school and found out that they do the same, that I actually started crying a bit. I actually thought that only very very few women have hair on their lower arms. (Sorry for my bad english.)

Yes, adolescence sucks, and it is a very hard time for a lot of people. However, you are more powerful than you think - and you CAN change the way you think and see yourself and others. It's such a horrible moment, when you realize that somewhere ot there there is a young girl, 14 years old, 13 years old, 12 years old... a little girl who starves herself and vomits until she's reduced herself to a skeleton, goes over to the mirror and thinks to herself: "I'm not beautiful enough. I'm not like the girl in the magazine" This is a very real issue, and many girls, from a very young age do this to themselves because of advertisements that are designed to cash in on young girl's insecurities. It's about damn time advertisers realized that their insecurity money is killing little girls.

Superlate reply, but: if the media would not be the kind of manipulative mess concerning Photoshop "touchups" (and it's in quotes because I do not consider it touchups anymore due to the incredibly extreme amounts they tend to take it to), would you think the risks of girls falling prone to fierce backlash for not looking perfect by using filters or photoshop would be just as big?

(Female) I agree with everything she said except the part about the stereotypes of men being less personal, less related to the body etc. I have had so many male friends who really believed their only way to find love,acceptance and success was to take proteins and spent all day in the gym. As if they had no self worth without having muscles. Adds and society tell men they should be strong, muscly cause thats the only way to win women, tells them to be toxic and competitive with each other, and the worst is they tell them their feelings dont matter because they are expendable.

I feel sick to my stomach after watching this... I just happened open this looking for something else... at first I thought it was just kinda funny... But then I started to listen and realize what was really being talked about and how much it is effecting all of us!! All I could think at first is thank god I only have boys... but I'm also a woman getting older... what happens to me... I started thinking about how horrible my boys father treats me... my boys see this... I've been trying since they were born to teach them to respect me and always respect women! Any woman! Family, friends, any women in general! All the time! Not just if they want something... or if it suits their needs... somehow I need to get out of my situation with there father... change things now while they are still young... or I will only be doing all the future woman in there lives a disservice. They will think that mentally abusing woman is fine, lying is fine, using woman fine... that woman should be never seen, never heard, never consulted in finances, never even Drive a car. That woman are for in his opinion... Good for NOTHING at all... maybe walking the dog... I couldn't live with myself! I try every day but I have circumstances that prevent almost anything being done... I'm trying my best but it's hard... I also had to move to a place that I don't know anyone... or how to do anything... the circumstances are embarrassing and you have to hear ALL of them before you could possibly understand... or have lived in my shoes... but seeing this makes me want to work harder to fix things to prove everyone wrong and show everyone that I was the one that was set up by every person I knew/know... I will work my hardest and keep following these teachings and maybe learn how to help myself and others... to make things better for us... i pray that I have the strength to do it... it's very hard to be alone all the time... I do have people around me almost 24/7 but they only make things worse to make sure I don't try to fix things... I keep trying but everytime i think I'm making progress or making things better they notice and make sure it either goes away and I have no access to it anymore or they make it look like they are the ones that made things better and that i did nothing to help... or usually that i did very bad things and need to be punished... then they threaten me and anything I do love... so I end up back at 0 again... maybe this will somehow help me find a way...

I was watching tv with my 6 year old relative, and a commercial came on for some beauty brand. The model had this fake image of beauty and was heavily edited. The 6 year old turns to me and say “I’m never going to be as pretty as her.” Broke my heart and I reassured her that she is beautiful just how she is. It was at that point that I stopped wearing makeup entirely because I wanted her to know that she never needs to change to be beautiful, and I wanted to prove that to her.

Yes.Think carefully about it, insulting or setting impossible standards and therefore spreading low self-esteem is a extremely efficient way of selling, they create and perpetuate a problem in which they sell the solution.

I once saw an old tripod-manufacturer ad in which a tripod was "conveniently" located between the thighs of a woman with the slogan "Because stability matters". It ehm, sickened me quite a bit to see that one, being a photographer myself, even though it was from the 70's when I had not yet been born.

This was an excellent talk and so true today in 2022, which has gotten so much more rampant in media, along with very graphic language in media that children watch on Netflix and Amazon, and many others. Parents need to take responsibility as well and teach their children well, and monitor what their children watch, see and hear the best they can, although I know this is impossible to control when they are with friends, at school, in public, etc. Don't preach, but talk to and with your kids.

We live in such a body- shaming country. It needs to be ended once and for all. There is never a such thing as a body looking younger its whole life long. People age: so do bodies. The fact that some women feel the need to make their bodies look younger and when they do: probably puts a lot of unnatural pressure on their body. It is best for them to enjoy their personality instead. In the long run: different types of bodies are special in their own types of ways. Being skinny has its perks, so does being curvy, and so does being THICK. Why can't America just realize that no matter what: BODIES WILL AGE. Because America is ignorant? Yup, most indeed. Why be ignorant about a body being able to age? Makes no sense whatsoever. We are human beings and EVEN WE AGE: so it is not healthy to force upon ourselves something unnatural on our body: just to make ourselves look younger.

Exactly the point I myself have been trying to get across to others: As a man, I can honestly say that although some men are assholes about it, most guys don't EXPECT a woman to spend thirty minutes on her makeup, and most don't expect their friends to use hair gel, wear a certain shirt, or anything like that.When I wake up in the morning, this is how my dress routine goes: Find pants. Put on pants. Find shirt. Put on shirt. Find socks. Put on socks. Put on shoes. Apply deodorant. Comb hair if necessary. This takes three minutes, tops. And not one person complains about how I look.

+Deflated dragon This video is feminist propaganda, it is a very twisted view on reality. The same adverts she uses objectify MEN as much as they objectify WOMEN. Feminists, like Kilbourne act as if this objectification is both a concrete thing and a thing which never changes actors. Everyone objectifies everyone else at some point or another. Strippers objectify customers. Customers objectify cashiers. Cashiers objectify managers. Cops objectify strippers. The cycle doesn't end and it isn't necessarily bad just because it happens. Dehumanizing people is part of what people do to handle other people. Sexualising works both ways. Young women are very fertile, older women are not.The idea that young women are being sexualised as being somehow bad or unnatural is a nonsense. Young woman sexualise themselves to attract men, it's natures way. It's built in. When older female feminists try to indoctrinate the young into believing that being sexy and attractive to men is bad in some way, it's because these older feminists have lost their own sex appeal. What was great to them once, is now no longer. Feminists have to lessen their hate for the behaviour of the young. Try watching *manwomanmyth* to help nullify your indoctrination.

You wrote in your first comment _"exploring the objectification of women on magazines"_ ... those words had meaning, so I responded. In simple terms, (i) women are no more "objectified" than men are. (ii) the advertising that we see is a business response to what works, what sells products, nothing else. (iii) the ads she uses are often unusual or from the past and not typical. (iv) there is no agenda to lower self esteem, feminism may raise esteem temporarily, causing some women to become fat ... doing them more harm than good in the long run. She talks nonsense.

I thought this talk was brilliant and really highlighted the problems with advertising and media culture to women and how it needs to change. However when Kilbourne says that 'there aren't consequences of men being objectified in todays culture' i struggle to see where she's coming from. Of course there are consequences, there are many examples of young male teenagers becoming more and more self conscious about their bodies and developing eating disorders and the pressure on boys to look like male models is increasing by the day. Some of this pressure coming from women themselves (and other men). Kilbourne then goes on to talk abut sexual harassment as if a man has never been and can never be sexually harassed or intimidated?!

It's because us men are better at hiding it to preserve the "masculine men mentality", while women are very open, expressive, and exposed themselves to their feelings, emotions, states that she thinks men doesn't have less issues and insecurities about themselves. What women does then is change their image, while men instead pretend, or learn to not care about their image. On the other there also those on the both sexes that embrace themselves as they are that their issues and insecurities disappear about themselves.

Every year or so I rewatch this... especially for the ending. It's been a rough year. Advertising is getting worse, as is the objectification of women - literally turning images of women into 'things'. The way we talk about women, irl and online, is horrifying. I need to remind myself of the hopeful note this talk ends on, the young women making change in the world, the attention people are trying to draw to this issue. I really really hope we can right the ship.

I'm not sure that the point of this is to not 'fall for advertising' - to not groom, or wear nice clothes. In her more extended talk Killing us Softly 4 Kilbourne describes that we all naturally wish to feel desirable, attractive and take care with our appearance. The problem is that these wishes are preyed upon through advertising, and distorted so that an impossible perfect-erotic ideal becomes normalised, and valued most highly to the exclusion of other attributes.The point is that no one, male or female, is immune to this cultural climate - it's deeply ingrained. And her point is that this is detrimental in many ways and points to much deeper problems with societal values. I don't think Jean's hairstyle undermines her argument.

To just add to my rant - kilbourne is not arguing that advertising CAUSES violence against women, eating disorders, obsession with appearance, discrimination against those who don't match ideals etc... She's talking about visual communication and media literacy. She's asking us to consider why such imagery exist, and what it means. That these images are created to reflect a certain culture, but that they also further contribute a certain culture where those things mentioned above are present, and a major issue. Ads are made to sell stuff - to make us want to shop. And it works to that end on a huge number of people. But they have other consequences and implications which affect us all.

Great talk by someone who has a lot of years of research on this topic. I have always thought that adverts were harmful to my self image and stopped buying magazines a long time ago. But this talk clearly shows the responsibility that advertisers have to our society as a whole.

it is So reassuring to be relieved of the burden of being unable to articulate to my male friends that I live in a different world than them, and what it is like living in a world which is intensely dangerous, the real threat of assault a part of my daily life, affecting my behavior and fashion choices EVERY DAY as well as my heart rate and stress level, as a woman who has been REPEATEDLY sexually assaulted (rape, gang rape, childhood sexual abuse, sexual rape facilitated by the education system, sexual assault in front of male teens as a young teen by a female correctional officer in the San Diego Juvenile hall, etc., etc.) I now have Complex PTSD and NO UNDERSTANDING of the statistic that says that 3 in 4 women are NOT sexually assaulted. And I have been ostracized by family, friends, and society as being AT FAULT for being attacked more than once, accused of inviting attacks, enjoying them, and being guilty of cheating on a partner because of failure to prevent unwanted attacks. I have literally had to APOLOGIZE for ALLOWING attacks on more than one occasion, to men who were important to my life and felt "betrayed" by my "behavior" which proves that I am either "a liar" (in one case), or "a slut," in the other. THIS VIDEO GIVES ME A VOICE. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

@@jonathanfarley2023 First of all, its a commentary and clearly says "Opinion" at the top of the page. That in itself shows that we should be wary of assigning this the same status as a researched and widely supported fact.

@@jonathanfarley2023 Another thing I'm wondering is why? Why would all these reliable, credible sources create a false picture? It would benefit the Supreme Court of Justice more to lean the other way to paint the US in a more positive light. It just doesn't add up

And also said "The statistics are lies" and the only argument you have is an opinion? That makes no sense but go off I guess

As an unbranded individual I either tune ads out, or simply avoid them entirely. If an advert breaks into my conscious to make me aware of iy it, I add to my list of boycotts

It is appalling to realize that this talk is so relevant even after 6 years have passed. She really got me hooked. It was a powerful, engaging and informative session. Kudos to her! Some of those ads were truly bewildering. Things indeed have gotten much worse. Since the inception of Onlyfans and with other social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat normalising it more than ever, the damage is done and there's much to be undone. So much that it seems unlikely that this will ever change but those 26k likers give me hope.
