@@MattDoesFitness 0 push/press ups. Feet can not be more than 12 inches apart, ideally touching. Thumbs and index fingers need to be within the chest area, your hands were to far apart. Sit ups are counted as a full rep, starting at the bottom so you need to go up and down for a rep. Fingers need to be interlocked behind the head. You can rest at the top of a sit up. If you are going to fail just fling unlock your fingers and fling yourself to the rest position (won't count as a rep, but won't fail you). The ideally strategy is to pretty much just pass it, then do 3-5 reps and rest. So for push ups do about 45 right away and the remaining 30 over the next 75 seconds. Try the new army ACFT next. It's much easier to pass but nearly impossible to max.

The US Army created a Combat Fitness Test which will replace its Physical Fitness Test, that you did here, next year. You may want to try out their new CFT which includes dead-lifts, sled drag, and kettle-bell carries. If you get enough likes, suggest trying the US Marine Corps' CFT rather than their PFT.

Matt, I am Retired US ARMY and I've got a little story for you. I was once assigned to a unit that did not do Daily PT exercises at all, but every 6 months a PT Test was still applied to all personnel. Well, I had once failed a PT Test while assigned to this unit. I passed the push ups and sit ups, but I failed the 2 mile run. Being that my unit did not do Daily PT, it did not have any Remedial PT programs for any individuals that failed PT Testing. Well, four months later, two months prior to next PT TEST, I bought a jump rope. I jumped rope for 15 minutes a day, everyday, until the next PT Test. I did not do any push ups or sit ups during this 6 month time frame after the failed PT Test either; I just jumped rope. Now here's the climax of the story. I not only passed the next PT Test, but I maxed the run, 100%, and improved on my push ups and sit ups and I didn't do any of them. Remember, I just jumped rope. There's an old saying that the "Jump Rope is the Boxers Best Friend." I hate long distance running, by the way, and the Jump Rope literally saved the day. The best thing about the jump rope is not only that it is the best cardio exercise and a compound exercise also, but you can do it anywhere and at any time at your convenience. My advice to you and your friends is to get yourself a good jump; not a speed rope or a heavy weighted rope, but a good semi weighted jump rope. My personnel choice was the "Lifeline Jump Rope" by Bobby Hinds (US Fitness Hall of Fame). There are plenty like them on the market. Jumping rope is not easy and it is all about timing. You will feel like a complete oaf and want to quit. Remember when "ROCKY" first started jumping rope? It takes time. So, start off at 3 minutes to get your footwork and timing established, then increase gradually to 5 minutes, 10 minutes, to 15 minutes. This exercise alone will train and strengthen the most important muscle in your body, THE HEART. Take it easy, Ron Coon

Speaking as a Drill Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, I find it interesting when super-fit people attempt the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test). Some points: On Mike's first few push-up reps, I would not have counted them because he did not go all the way up. Not only do you need to go down far enough to have the back of your arms parallel to the ground, you need to go all the way up so your arms are strait. On Matt, I would have terminated your sit-ups a long time ago. You were resting in the down position. The only way you can rest is in the up position but you cannot use anything to hold yourself in the up position. Several times you rested in the down position. I would have given you 1 warning if you were a trainee taking your APFT, but on the second rest I would terminate the event for you. Lastly, you cheated against Mike. You need to have a minimum of 10 min between events, but you had him run by himself which gave you a longer rest period. You both should have run at the same time to get an accurate score against each other. I would like to see how you two do on the ACFT (Army Combat Fitness Test) which is 6 events and 600 points. 3-rep maximum dead-lift, power throw, release push-up, leg tuck, sprint-drag-carry, two-mile run. www.army.mil/acft/ If you are ever in the Los Angeles area I know of a few company of Drill Sergeants (even a few are gym-rats) that would be willing to help you out ;-)

This is going back to the 90's, but man ... I was nowhere near as buff as these guys but I would do in the low 100's in pushups, high 90's on situps, and 11:40's on the two mile. It just goes to show you the difference between muscle endurance vs muscle strength & size. Good on them for trying it and having a good time. Pretty decent mile 2 mile times given that they are essentially untrained in running.

They're actually better than they give themselves credit for too. They went deeper than they had to on the push ups, and much further down than they had to on the sit ups. For the sit ups only your shoulder blades have to hit the ground then you can bounce up again. If they used typical cheesy methods they probably could've got 90s.

I served in the U.S Army Airborne for over 15 years and I was also an Army Fitness Instructor. There is a big difference between Muscular Strength and Muscular Endurance. Bodybuilders primarily focus on muscular strength which allows them to lift a heavier maximum of weight. There are four major components of physical fitness, but in the U.S Army we primarily rely on Muscular Endurance and Cardiorespiratory Endurance-- this is so that we are able to use our muscles repeatedly for longer periods of time without getting fatigue; which is essential for operating in situations that requires hours of endurance. It doesn't matter how jacked you are in the Army, because if you do not train for Muscular Endurance then you will suffer from Lactic Acidosis when doing repeated movements and it will slow you down if you have to put your muscles under tension for longer periods of time. I remember doing a 16 mile ruck march with a junior soldier that just came from a bodybuilding lifestyle and he was much bigger than I, but even though our weapon and rucksack weighed the same amount, the bodybuilding guy couldn't keep up with me and he struggled a lot with endurance pain. I have no doubt that he could out lift me in a gym environment, but he was one of my slowest soldiers in a tactical environment. We don't need troops that can bench press 300 lbs, we need troops that can endure extreme conditions during 12 to 15 months of deployment. That is why the Army Physical Fitness Test is all about endurance and not so much to demonstrate strength. However, the new Combat Fitness Test incorporates exercises that has a better measurement for all four components of physical fitness: Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiorespiratory Endurance, Body Composition, and Flexibility.

I'm 215 pounds at 6"1 and I run about 10 to 20 miles depending on how i feel that day. The calisthenics and sit up parts are extremely easy and I primarily focus on power lifting. I don't agree with some of what you say. The muscular person should be I question some of us have crazy genetics and can so both at high levels that's gym strength for lifting and performing strength for the marines. Just have to become a hybrid type of trainer and train in all styles.

As a bodybuilder that's in the US Army I'd say you guys did a great job with no prep. The Army pt test is pretty much a joke for gauging a soldier's overall physical fitness, it's really just an endurance challenge where the little guys excel.

@@AnalogzZ lmao easy killer, I wasn't trying to knock anyone all I'm saying is the APFT is strictly an endurance test there's no real strength involved. All the guys maxing the run in my unit are skinny, there's a reason they are changing the PT test to incorporate weights.

As a little guy, completely agree. Usually have no problem maxing the test, will back you up that it is a joke for someone’s physical fitness assessment. Though I will say, size doesn’t always equal strength. Can be tiny af but still throw up the same weights as some bigger guys

@JohnSmith-zi9or
@JohnSmith-zi9or 4 жыл бұрын
@@aMusicGamer Because you are doing less work. It's physics and science. The definition of work is work = force times distance. Since you have a lot less weight to move which is the force, the work you are doing over a fixed distance is much lower than someone who is heavier than you. I have short stocky friends who can out lift me in the gym all damn day. However, their arms and legs are much shorter than mine and they also weigh less. If we adjusted the equation for distance (that is arm or leg length), they would probably need to lift 20% heavier than me to be performing the same amount of work. In other words, my range of motion is larger than there's so I am moving the weights a longer distance.

You can only rest in the up position. Also, headphones are not allowed on the run portion, as it gives a tempo and motivating advantage. Other than that, you followed the test really well. At 39 years old (my last test) I did 65 pushups, 82 situps, and a 13:10 run - but that is practicing the test just about every other week...and running a f*ton. @@kevincbradley Bro, these guys collapse to the ground from exhaustion after only a 1.5 mile run-- which is the worst thing you can do after cardio. You must continue jogging at a slower pace to return your heart rate to a normal rhythm. Fitness is about muscular strength, muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance. These jacked dudes only have muscular strength. However their muscles have little endurance and their cardio health is obviously shit. That's not fit. That's the problem with most bodybuilders, they train for physique and strength but NOT for endurance nor fitness. That's why so many bodybuilders have cardiac related health issues later in life despite their "fitness". This is also why bodybuilders are not considered athletes. Athletes train for speed, coordination, endurance and moving their bodies through space-- areas which bodybuilders lack cuz most of them only train for strength and for their damn selfies. That's not fitness, bro. So many bodybuilders are meatheads who have no idea how the body actually works.

I've been in the Army for 13 years and I can usually max the test (my run has been slipping lately though). First off just wanted to say great job guys, don't listen to pissants on here who have never done a pushup but just talk shit. As some have mentioned you guys are incredibly strong but as you saw the Army tests are more geared towards endurance. Also I think you guys made the test a little bit harder for yourself by doing very full extensions and slow reps. Usually to max it you have to crank out as much as you can in a burst. You guys did much better form than most Soldiers. Y'all would easily get higher scores when you saw how normal soldiers take the test. I also would love to see you do the new Army ACFT, with several interesting events (and it has deadlifts which I'm sure you'd destroy). Cheers .

Apft sit ups really has a strategy to it... You instinctively want to do sit ups to do a work out, but you really just need to release yourself once you're at the top and flop to the ground, and your shoulders need only touch the ground, not your hands. If you're holding yourself going down you fatigue yourself. The APFT isn't a workout, its a test so just go crazy with them and bang them out. Took me a while to get a good strategy down for it. You should also consider the elevation when you're doing the 2 mile run. Higher up you are, the worse it is. Push ups you must also consider that your feet must not exceed 12in apart, mike was very close to that. You're also permitted to slide your hands around to utilize different parts of your arms so long as they don't leave the ground. I respect your efforts, it was enjoyable to watch!
