Boeing 777X/777-9 [N779XW] Takeoffs and Landings at Portland Airport (PDX)

Ever since Boeing began sending the 777X to Spokane for testing, I've been waiting patiently for them to finally send it to Portland. Today sees all that waiting finally come to fruition. Incredible to finally get to see it in person and listen to the roar of the GE9Xs. Enjoy some of my favorite footage I've ever gotten.

I worked at Boeing for 22 years starting in 1978 and departing in 2000. The 777 was my favorite program, by far. Very proud of her and the record she has created after all these years. She'll be flying at least another 30 years so could easily outlive me, work I did as a relatively young man.

When the 777 production line was launched in the early 1990's, the program motto as you probably recall was "Working Together," a philosophy pioneered by Phil Condit that created an atmosphere of close cooperation between the customer, suppliers, and Boeing support organizations. The result was the creation of an airplane that offered outstanding performance with quality and longevity, and at a reasonable cost. Sadly, those production concepts that were so instrumental in creating this wonderful airplane seemed to have been largely forgotten, or ignored, on later programs.

Only looks effortless because of the light weight during testing or the late rotation. Very common on test flights.

I had the pleasure of working on the controls systems for those GE9X engines! It was pretty awesome for my first job straight out of college! :D

Twin-engine jets have a reputation for being small narrow body aircraft, but it’s hard to believe that the 777X is the same size if not slightly bigger and longer than a 747 and an A380, plus carrying a similar number of passengers!

Do ur research. The 777x has a max takeoff weight of 775,000lbs while the 747 and a380 has a max takeoff weight of 988,000 and 1,208,000lbs. The 777x is longer than both the 747 and a380 but it isn’t bigger. Also, the 747 and a380 has a max passenger capacity of 660 and 853 while the 777x is 550. Don’t comment if u know nothing about what you’re talking about

That's why the wingtips fold when they are folded they have the same wingspan as old generation 777s!

Only the 777 has that most unique engine sound that I rlly love. The 777 was my childhood plane, because I have flown in it a lot of times. Also, since I have ridden on a 777, for some reason it has very smooth landings compared to others. I remember getting of the plane down stairs and looking at the 2 massive engines. They where so big!!!!

Thanks! Yeah, it seems to sound a bit like the GE90, but it also sounds pretty spooky at low power. Seems they took a leaf out of the Pratt and Whitney book on that one.

I work at the Spokane airport and loved getting to drive by this plane everyday. I was unsure whether they would let me anywhere near it so I keeped some space but those engines are huge! Can't wait to fly on it.

I like when they do those extremely long flight tests with all that special instrumentation packed inside where the seats would be that takes thorough readings of every single section of the plane to see how it all faires duing every flight and handling situation they can throw at it!

I saw her on approach from my place in Gresham but by the time I could get myself out the door and over to the airport she was already gone back to Moses Lake. I was kicking myself for missing it. Thank you for posting!

No problem mate! Lucky you got to see it at all. I know a guy living in Vancouver who had to hear it fly over him 3 times but he couldn't see because it was cloudy.

I used to work on the runway in Miami international I had the luck to watch it take off when the first Gen 777 200came out beautifull engine sound up close in that runway. Worthy successor to the 747.

Is it common for Boeing and airlines to use PDX as an airport to test new planes? Judging by your videos, was surprised to see so much testing of new aircraft.
