B-17G #42-32024 was delivered to the 524th Bombardment Squadron of the 379th Bombardment Group in February 1944 and was given the name "Swamp Fire". The 379th flew more sorties than any other Bomb Group in the Eighth Air Force and dropped a greater bomb tonnage than any other Group. Swamp Fire was flown by forty different crews during the course of 1944 and became was the first Heavy Bomber in the group to fly 100 Missions without an abort. By late October 1944, crews commented: "After a new nose and tail section, a new ball turret, 16 engine changes, three wing replacements and over 1000 bullet and flak hole patches, there's not much of the original plane left!" Swamp Fire eventually returned to the U.S. in July 1945 and was sold for scrap later that year.
Our subject for today is fantastic diecast model in 1:72 by Air Force 1 models. And is a pretty good rendition of the B-17G USAAF bomber "Swamp Fire".
Thank you as usual for checking out our video, we appreciate it immensely. I hope you found it helpful in some way and if so please throw us a like or even subscribe if you wish to be kept up to date with our latest releases ‪@heavymetaldiecast‬
Use of any images or video in any of my reviews is used out of pure respect in regard to units and/or actual people. I wish to acknowledge all those that have served past and present with their respective nations armed forces with some making the ultimate sacrifice. Political ideals aside, it takes great courage and selflessness to answer your countries call.
Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
Cheers

I am a 379th BG historian and have some of the records of the group. It is nice to see this tribute to one of our "Planes of Fame". My Dad was the Tail Gunner of the Krostjens Crew of which Byron Clark was the Co-Pilot. By the time she had finished her Air Combat career she had over 25 engines replaced due to Battle Damage and an interesting point of reference would be that she was one of the first B-17G's to have her chin and ball turrets removed to make then sleeker for flight. This was done in late November 1944. She flew six Air Combat Missions this way as a study for the ever-growing inventory of older ships. I also have info and photos on her days as a weather/scout ship and her return to America after being contacted by the son of her Ground Crew Chief during that time frame. She had been refitted and made air worthy at the 2nd BAD renamed "the Scorpion". and flew 30+ plus mission as a weather and Scout ship.

Thats some really interesting information thank you for sharing with us here on the channel. I enjoy hearing from people who have more knowledge than myself and that's what I enjoy about doing this channel. people sharing their knowledge to help give these models some life and context rather than just a piece of metal sitting on a shelf. You certainly had to be a brave man to take to the skies during WW2 no matter what side you were on. Certainly a scary time to be alive, ordinary men forced into extraordinary situations.Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate that, Cheers!!

Sweet. Our Pappy (Byron Clark) flew right seat in the first crew for 33 missions on Swamp Fire. And he is credited with her name. He died at almost 94, 10 years ago. I asked him why Swamp Fire and his response was to put fear in the enemy due to the nature of an actual methane swamp fire. Pappy also helped develop ILS after the war and married Patricia and had 7 kids. He was a great dad and used to tell us "Give em hell!" before our sport's events. lol

Thank you so much for sharing that with me and all of us here on the channel. I appreciate it immensely. You sound proud and rightly you should be. It took a brave man to take to the skies in those days. And he sounded like a great family man too. Glad he got to be part of your life for such a long time. Once again thank you for your comment and for watching the video. 😀👍

Yes i think I got it at a good price, I think they have gone up a little over the last year...like everything I guess. But still a lot cheaper than a Corgi bird!!!

Thats it, when the big white table cloth cover comes out you know its a big plane review,haha. Beacuse the table I use for the video is a fold up one and has a seam in the middle. Which for smaller aircraft I avoid as I film either side of the seam. 😂 Do the AF1's really go for that much? I thought Corgi yes, as I bought a Corgi one from the US for $190USD a few months ago,haha

As far as i can tell the ailerons and rudder are also a different color irl, i have a corgi one and its fully cast and yet the colors are still different. It adds some interest to what would else be a large, somewhat boring paintjob so i appreciate it😂

Some of you sound as if you may be modelers. I am working up an idea of a mission (Little known because of its Classification). It happened on 28 May 1944 Code Name "Grapefruit Mission" I plan on making this a traveling exhibit to all of the WWII Museums. Full Credits will be accompanying the exhibit. It will involve 40 aircraft and crews from two Bomb Groups the 303rd and 379th.

Yes a lot on here I think are both modelers and diecast collectors. Me I dont really do the model part annoy more, my patience and hand skills arent as young as they used to be,haha. Is that "Grapefruit Mission" to do with the glide bombs experiment late in the war?, I think they even called the glide bombs grapefruit bombs.

Hi, do you have a video reviewing a b-17 from corgi? I was looking for it and i couldn't find it. I found your review of another b-17 but it is from af1 too. Anyway these b-17s from af1 are a good alternative to corgi's versions. 👍

How much have I read that AF1 B-17 is even better than CORGI? It would be very interesting to see their comparisons. Shape, paint, lines, rivets and everything else. Since you have a models from most companies, I think such a comparison video would be more successful.

Beautiful airplane. Who isn’t partial to a B17, eh? 😅 I always found the defensive nose positions on the B17 to be a bit odd. I note the inclusion of the remote turret in the G version, but it still has these awkward side-mounted guns from earlier designs. Why not just put a standard nose turret in there like the Liberator’s? A mystery to me! Edit: Also, this version is missing the thirteenth gun in the mid-dorsal position. I wonder how effective this was in practice. Lastly is the B17 not considered a medium bomber due to its relatively modest payload?
@heavymetaldiecast
@heavymetaldiecast 10 ай бұрын
Yes i found those nose positions a bit weird also, although the guns could be pointed pretty much forward the field of view was still fairly restricted. But i guess when in a box formation every one covers each other its pretty hard for enemy fighters to get through unscathed. Yes that dorsal position you would think would be covered by the top turret, I wonder if it was manned constantly as its in the radio area so assume the radio operator would man it, but if he is busy with radio duties, he isn't going to be using the gun. Hey, it's always good to have options I guess, can never have too many guns!!! haha. The American heavy bombers generally carried around half the payload as what the British ones did depending on distance. I think if its got 4 engines and a crew in double digits that's classed as heavy,haha....thats my opinion. But any amount of bombs falling on your head is scary!! My mum was a child in Germany when the Allies would constantly bomb her city. She remembers very vividly hiding with her mother and brother when ever the sirens went off.

@@heavymetaldiecast Scary story regarding your family. War is awful. We all love the technology of the time but it’s easy to forget the lives impacted. I learned today that the P-38 Lightning could carry a bomb load near enough that of the B-17.
@heavymetaldiecast
@heavymetaldiecast 10 ай бұрын
@@shinra2755 Yes i was a little surprised about the relatively small loadout for its size. Depending on the mission range the B-17's load was only abit more than Lufwaffe medium bombers. I think in terms of lives, your risking 10 lives sending a B-17 to drop their bombs when a He-111 would drop similar amount risking 5 lives. Even the ranges were similar. Where's is the British bomber are carrying 3 times as much as either. Although defensively it swung the other way, B-17 9 defensive positions (13 MGs), He-111 4 postions (7 MGs), Lancaster 3 positions (8 MGs) making the B-17 the hardest to shoot down. Yes unfortunately civilians are the casualties of war. Funny though, both my parents families fled the rubble that was Germany to migrate to Australia at different times. My mum and dad met each other here and then pop i was born. So technically I'm full blooded German born here in the land of Oz 😂. I did not know the P-38 could carry such a large payload wow. You know a totally useless fact about the P-38, it's engine noise was combined with that of a P-51 to help create the sound of speeder bikes in Return of the Jedi 🤣

@@heavymetaldiecast Great analysis and story. Like I’ve said to you before, I have huge respect for the innovation and design of German technology during the war. @@shinra2755 oh for sure the German scientists certainly were working over time. Some real futuristic stuff coming out of their heads. I have a lot of WW2 German memorabilia I collected when ibwas younger as well. But only because of my heritage and not for any political reason. It amazed me even years after the war when i was at high school in the 90's (showing my age) people would call me a Nazi because of my German last name. The beauty of this channel also for me as I am also learning new things about different aircraft when I do the hour or two research on each model. Thanks again for being part of this 😀👍
