Saung Mang Ujo is a Centre of Angklung Music which comprises a school of music, dance and West Javan culture in the city of Bandung, West Java. Mang Ujo established the Centre to preserve traditional Sundanese/West Javan music and culture. Angklung is a thousand year old bamboo musical instrument which you shake by hand to vibrate the sound. Each angklung represents the sound on the "octatonic" ladder. The bigger piano-like instrument is a modernised collection of tens of angklung arranged together the same as the octaves on a piano. It is tapped by fist to make the sound. On the premises of Saung (=covered stage) Mang Ujo is a permanent open air, but covered (built from bamboo !!) theatre and stage, every day there are performances. Students come watch arriving in schoolbusses from all around. At 3.30 pm there is a 2hr show for interntional audience, in english. The performers are all students from the school, except for an ocasional artist appearance as in this video. Besides angklung (bamboo instrument from more than a thousand year ago !) there are traditional dance performances from all over the Indonesian archipelago.
