Restoring a small steam locomotive takes as much work as restoring a big steam locomotive. The only difference is the parts are smaller and lighter, but no easier to work on. We found some surprises when we removed the boiler of 7-1/4" gauge Ossipee Central 662.
We already knew about one of the tubes being loose, but had no other information yet as to why. It was revealed much later that the tip of a gun barrel brush is stuck in the tube. I didn't know about that until after the video had been edited and rendered and was in the upload cue.
We also found that some of the screws that hold the smoke box on the boiler barrel were broken off, which meant we needed to hammer the smoke box off. That was the most nerve wracking part of the job so far. The smoke box appears to have held its shape, though.
Next step is to find a place to get the boiler acid dipped.
