Not being an engineering sort of person I was mightily impressed by the work put in on that boiler. Such expertise that goes in to servicing the boiler was truly something to behold and hats off to the chap and his mates for showing us how it was done. The videos on this channel are always so well done and entertaining. Thank you very much. I really must come and visit you one day.

I got to see our Norfolk Western 611 Being Rebuilt at Spencer Shops in Spencer NC. It was an awesome Undertaking! Although Much Beloved and Beautiful but if it weren't for many Volunteers to perform this work of Love and Beauty. I have always admired the not just the Utility of British Locomotives but the pride in workmanship but making them things of Engineering Beautiful! God Bless You for your efforts to all Railroad History alive for those who come after us.

Thanks to these noble people, steam locomotives can continue to live! Best regards from the center of the continent, from the Czech Republic! Like!

We used to machine those at Derby back in the day. Happy days.

A modern steam locomotive boiler is one of the most impressive pieces of engineering ever designed by human beings . When you start to look at the supper heating system and the firebox design and the steam circuit, blast pipe etc. many diesel guys call steam locomotives kettles, but I don’t think they fully understand the majesty of how these things work .

Steam engines are interesting but ICE are more complicated

Excellent presentation on the finer points of boiler construction. Explains why overhauls on steam enginrs are so expensive.

Do you think you could talk about brick artches in fire boxes. How are they mounted with out the bricks vibrating out of position. How are they mounted to the sides of the firebox.

You didn't mention the "weep holes" or "Judas holes" in the stay bolts. These are small holes drilled length-ways almost through the stay bolts from the outside end. If the bolt fails, or even cracks, boiler water (under pressure) will get into the hole and run out the side of the boiler. This shows that a particular bolt is damaged, and needs replaced.

Very good video and impressed with the time and patience in repairing these boilers. I feel the design of the Stevenson boiler could be changed to reduced the time and hence cost by using welding and plate forming as seen on central heating radiators for the wall of the fire box. No doubt a stainless steel boiler could out live the loco but the up front cost would be higher. The steam engine changed society from a slow moving world by replacing human and animal power with machine power. The steam loco is a character machine which attracts our affection by its sound when struggling up an incline or racing along a level track. It is very important we preserve them to retain their link to our past when a harsh world rapidly changed for the better.

This video was extremely interesting , is it possible that you can do more so that we can follow the re build right up to its completion please .

I am trying to figure out what makes the tubes fly out of the front of one of these things in a grotesque tangled mass when/if they explode. It helps when someone who actually knows something does some explaining. What good info! Dudes know their stuff!

Bear with me for a moment, but why are boilers round instead of square. Is it a physics thing ?

Hi there, in short, yes. A cylindrical shape is strong compared to square which will have points of higher stress and weak points. A few boilers do have a flat top at the firebox end but there are a few other factors to consider when designing your pressure vessel

Annoying background music. Tinkly loop piano doesn’t really help. Fade it in as a link then fade it out again. Let’s just hear these two talk. Otherwise a good channel.
