As a point of note, My grandfather who used to drive a new bentley and jag every year from the 60's up until he died in 1980. He wasn't "allowed" to buy a rolls, because he was considered "new money" and rolls wouldn't sell him a car only bentley and jag would. It was more about class structure back then than just money.

TheSmokingTire You have to remember the history of the Bentley company, and of Walter Owen Bentley himself. Rolls-Royce took Bentley over in a hostile bid to prevent a merger with Napier, which would have produced a giant equal to R-R itself - and W.O. left at that point, ending up at Lagonda, where, just before WW2 and in very much reduced circumstances, he designed a 4.5 litre (4480cc) all-alloy quad-cam V12 engine which (at a time when most engines were either side-valve or OHV, all-iron and redlined at 3000rpm) went to 5k, and the car it went into is widely hailed as a masterpiece, as a sporting GT. War, unfortunately, put paid to their promising racing careers, and they're tremendously rare - and, shortly after the war, Lagonda was taken over by Aston Martin, which formerly built Bugatti-like lightweight sports cars, mainly for hillclimbing and sprinting, but which did OK at Le Mans. I think that, as with BMW, their first car started life as an Austin Seven. The Tadeusz Marek straight-six which powered all Aston Martins until 1969, when the DBS gained Marek's V8 (although the straight-six could be specified until 1972), was derived from the Bentley V12. Marek's V8, which was also significantly similar in head design, lasted until 2000, when it was superseded by the Ford Duratec V12-engined Vanquish. I think, therefore, that it can be claimed safely that Aston Martin is the true inheritor of the 1920s gentleman racer legacy - one which is evident to this day, with people like Chris Harris racing the modern Vantage at events like the N24.

Strip it down to around 4,000 pounds and you've got the Bentley GT3 from the Pirelli World Challenge with a detuned V8, because they're only allowed 500hp in the PWC races. Still a fun car for the bucks. I find Corvettes kinda claustrophobic.

Matt, why dont you put this on The Smoking Tire? I'm confused was this a "Drive" sponsored episode?
@hackerpl6699 жыл бұрын
The Smoking Tire has clearly become more of a "side project" per say. Matt has done /drive for quite some time now which is clearly more successful then The Smoking Tire. That's why more then likely the review type and more edited version go on /drive. Smoking tire as most can see now consists of one takes with little to no editing to the video itself.
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
omar mohammed Because we find a balance between the two. Because /DRIVE offers us a real budget to pay our employees (thanks exclusively to the success of /DRIVE+) we can make pretty films. Because TST doesn't make as much money as a free channel, we do more low-rent stuff there.
@o.m3839 жыл бұрын
So if TST grew to the point where you could "pay your employees" would you stop doing drive?
@morskulskram17229 жыл бұрын
***** Nearly all international viewers can't watch /Drive+ on youtube. I watch and pay for it on Vimeo, did you count that to? I highly doubt that anyone from TST will answer your first question. Even if they would like to in the future, why should they bite the hand that feeds them now?

I never understood the practice of cooking lobster live. How could it possibly change the taste that much if you kill it prior to boiling?
@cominacatcha9 жыл бұрын
Sometimes there are some animals that tastes rather different if it is killed some time before it was cooked. Anyway, I've never tried lobster, so I don't know about it. But I do know about crab. To get the best taste usually crab was killed only several minutes before it was cooked.

I totally agree when Matt who says the sound of the motor is almost as important than the actual horsepower produced. Take for instance the Dodge Viper which to me sounds like a v6 with dual exhaust. In my opinion they need to pull out that V10 and throw the Hellcat v8 in it. But sound definitely plays a big role and in a sports car / muscle car. The only vehicle I think that breaks that mold of sound and horsepower is probably the Nissan GTR which is just insanely quick.
@TheSmokingTire9 жыл бұрын
Michael Wilson hellcat engine won't fit in the Viper... too wide; too tall.

TheSmokingTire Too Bad..! Be a better power plant than the V10....My opinion of course....

I am comforted that I'm not the only person that feels this way. I beat myself up a bit for buying a Mk4 vw with the vr6 boat anchor instead of the turbo 4, but my ears wouldn't tolerate it. Dodgy timing chains and great exhaust sound vs. better aftermarket, weight savings, and handling at the cost of asthmatic wheeze and sludging issues. Meh, still shouldn't have bought the thing but my ears are happy.
@natem13219 жыл бұрын

@PineappleMelon9 жыл бұрын
It's built in Britain. You wouldn't call a Morgan a German car just because it has a BMW engine...
@Rob.One.9 жыл бұрын
It's still a British design and style, In that event, Lamborghini is a german made too. And Mercedes is half French and half German, because they put some of their diesel car is equiped with Renault's engines, same for Volvo, with some Peugeot's engines. Don't be silly
@fabia.24159 жыл бұрын
Well Bentley is owned by a german car maker that makes it german, so your point abaut engines is irrelevant. Dont be butthurt abaut it.
@Rob.One.9 жыл бұрын
Hans Dennis It was an example, don't be so agressive and insulting, I love german car more than others world brands, your conclusion was just too hasty. I know that Mercedes isn't owned by noone other one, but, they even make vehicules with some Renault's engines and serveral transporter vehicules on the same basis that Renault's transporter vehicules (Yeah, they'll stop their partnership with VW). So please, I never said that Mercedes was half french, it was an ironic metaphor.
@Rob.One.9 жыл бұрын
Hans Dennis You can be proud of your country and his cars manufacturers but don't be so chauvinistic, the mecanic parts (engine, gearbox, chassis) are coming from Audi yes, but there is still British spirit on this cars.
