Boimler finds himself in the past facing his idols.

DS9 was terrible as well. They would take Sisko, Dax, O'Brian, Bashir, Worf and then depending on what they were doing a bunch of non-starfleet characters like Kira, who shouldn't be doing anything with Starfleet unless it directly related to Bajor, Garak or Odo. There was also an episode of TNG where Picard was gone, Riker took over then went down to a planet, got captured with Worf & Geordi then Data & Troi also go down to the planet, with Crusher entirely absent from the episode. At least Voyager had an excuse that half the crew died.@@KingCrab85

Newsflash for you Martin. They've been doing that since the original series. That's where the standard started. Here's another thing you need to remember loud and clear and this is from someone who spent 24 years in the military. There is no such thing as an indispensable person. The Dominion War taught Starfleet that.

So apparently a tiny fraction of fans had no idea this episode was in the pipeline {I can't even guess at the amount of tunnel vision that must have required}, and turned on SNW only to see this first four minutes of Lower Decks. They thought Paramount had mis-uploaded the respective episodes of the two series. They figured it out eventually, but then I heard from someone who had no idea Lower Decks existed AT ALL. {In their defense they live in the UK. The streaming services are different there.} But honestly, this was the most hyped episode of Star Trek in three decades. What WOULD you have to do to be totally unaware of it?

There was once an episode of "The X Files" that started out as an episode of "Cops." There was no warning, and no hype. Nobody knew what was happening, and a LOT of people were very, very angry that Cops was on instead of X Files. Then something freeeeky happened to the cops and the X Files music started playing. It was a great fake out, and a pretty good episode.

This episode taught me one major thing about Star Trek..... IN EVERY OTHER SERIES THEY DON'T TALK LIKE PEOPLE! Everything every word, every single measure of communication is measured and precise and proper and dignified, and PEOPLE DON'T TALK LIKE THAT. And it was so PERFECTLY exemplified in Boimler trying to talk, the stuttering and rambling, and then PIke would respond to him as if addressing a formal fucking hearing to Starfleet Command, they don't just... chat, even in casual settings, TNG, DS9, Voyager, OS, everything! They don't ramble and talk over each other, and banter like fucking PEOPLE. It's like Polite Society completely overwrote all 'casual' interaction in the Star Trek Universe. and then Lower Decks arrives and holy shit, they just go at it and it just didn't HIT me until I seen this episode. :P

I just started watching this show, and I hated Mariner in the first episode. I almost stopped watching after that, but I decided to give it a chance, and I'm glad I did. I think the show is great.

Weird to think this is the last Mariner and Boimler plot, and it didn't even come in their own series.

Honestly this should have been a Lower deck episode. The same episode you mind, no change, just put on a different show. Imagen the surprise. A clever trailer only hinting on time travel and then the reveal when you saw it for the very first time. I understand why they did what they did, but the surprise and reveal would have been bigger I think.

Enterprise found it first since the crew were down there when the real people portal was activated. The Orions came later and stole the portal.

Yes but later when they send Boimler and Mariner home the deal with the Orions was they'd let them take credit for first finding the portal.
