The "Gourmetica Insularis" origins from Moers' "Die 13 1/2 Leben des Käpt'n Blaubär" and works almost exactly the same as the Bowin, except there are no other dangerous creatures on it and it only eats one big animal per year

5:15 The Glutton Forest will been very perfect to incorporate in the Toriko universe. Even though is in the One Piece Universe. But it still will be 😎 to have in either the Toriko manga or anime. (If it still was relevant). It will fit perfectly with the Toriko Franchise.

Highly recommend the Walter Moers books, it has a extremely fantastical world similar to One Piece (random holes in dimensions, a desert made of sugar, Atlantis, magnetised water that flows up mountains, sentient elements, molten meteor lake, catacombs that are raided for rarer books and so forth) and just good stories. Rumo is probably the darkest and most "shonen/seinen" book, while Captain Bluebear is the most adventurous.

Sounds like inspiration could have come in part from the real life Bonin islands: about 1000 km from Tokyo. Part of archipelago and first settled by a man coincidentally named Nathaniel 'Savory'.

the island in the book by Walter Moers actually works exactly the same as the ones in One Piece. If you get the chance to read the Zamonia books, go for it. They are amazing!

German reporting in: Walter Moers is the inventor of Käpt'n Blaubär (Captain Blue Bear), the Kleines Arschloch (Little Asshole) and others. He's a mystery book author and I absolutely love him. Especially because he's very reclusive, there are few pictures of him available online. He always draws humans with very big noses :D I don't know if his books are available in English, if they are, definitely read them! They're super cool :))

Tekking Venus fly traps have a lot more than 3 hairs in their jaws. but yes, you are correct in that they are actually clever about the detection mechanism; it'll ignore if only one or two hairs are triggered, to avoid false positives from wind or debris. The "teeth" on the end of the leaves are also especially spaced so that they allow smaller prey insects to escape, which leads into the second bit, the hairs are still active after it has closed and if they aren't triggered again the trap will open, assuming it caught a leave or piece of trash, rather than a life insect it can actually eat. If a small insect escapes and leaves it empty, it'll open back up and reset. If it catches trash or something else that doesn't move around, it'll open and reset. They only stay shut and start up digestion if what they catch is nice, big, and alive.

now I'm wondering how they would have evolved: maybe they started out as carnivores water lilies that were pushed out to sea on a current and started to grow bigger each generation (likely to make photosynthesis more effective to counteract the lack of food) and that allowed them to swallow bigger prey, so they kept on growing until they were island sized. no idea how they would evolve their luring tactics though.
