This unique, 44-mile-long river varies from a meandering stream in a conifer bog to a fast-flowing river with numerous rapids and ledges. As it flows north, the Brule River drops 418 feet in elevation, plunging 328 feet in just the last 19 miles.
The Bois Brule is often referred to as the “River of Presidents” because five United States Presidents have visited and fished the river - Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland , Calvin Coolidge , Herbert Hoover , and Dwight Eisenhower . Most famously, Calvin Coolidge spent 3 months during the summer of 1928 at the Cedar Island Lodge. Local residents built a new railroad depot, strung telephone and telegraph lines, redid roads and constructed an airport. A makeshift Oval Office was set up inside Superior Central High School for the nation’s business.

Things you should know:
-Motorized watercraft and inflatables are prohibited.
-Glass bottles are prohibited. Unopened or empty beverage containers and all litter must be secured in a larger container that is securely fastened to the craft.
-Paddlers must launch and land only at allowed designated canoe landings.
-Camping is allowed only at the two state forest campgrounds (Bois Brule Campground and Copper Range Campground).
