I got this recommended after seeing the library clip. Interesting how PB's displays of affection damaged Diane's ability to receive gifts. She immediately thinks there's an underhanded objective about making her feel shitty...she can't take the gift because the gift feels like a trap. :c

@@yassinghareeb5761 think it's the idea because he has so much disposable money and his attitude is overly happy and positive sometimes too much that he doesn't understand some people like the idea of things not necessarily the thing. Diane liked the idea of the library, peace and tranquility and she probably explained more but I forgot, she didn't actually want a library it was a personal thought to her. Think it's also about liking and wanting an unachievable kind of thing, like your own mental happiness and space and that doesn't have to be translated into reality

Why Diane and Guy works is because both know they have to make compromises. Diane IS being guarded and antagonistic here because of how she can't handle feeling good about herself or thinking she deserves things, but Guy doesn't grasp just yet that it's not as easy as "Just think positive". Diane learns how to be more positive and more accepting and vulnerable while Guy learns how to be more supportive and understanding. They meet each other halfway. Diane and PB DID try to do this, but their growth was stunted by the fact they had two very different goals/ideas for their relationship at the time (PB living FOR the relationship and Diane simply living WITH the relationship)

Yes indeed. He really didn't act like he said he would be. BUT. I think in his mind, he honestly truly FELT he was giving it his all, and the relationship was his purpose. He just needed to better empathize whenever he listened to people. You can be a great listener, and still never get why another person feels the way they are, you can never get totally on their level, not for want of trying- but you maybe just come from such different backgrounds, or have such wildly different priorities. Doesn't make you bad as a person, just bad as a couple.
@m.b.6137 Жыл бұрын
@@avosmash2121 A very good point! And yeah, relationships that work is really about seeing if you two CAN meet halfway and if you WANT to meet halfway. You're not bad if you can't, but you can't hold the other person to that.

@@xdlr22 I get that. I meant more of PB doesn't know who he is outside the context of other people, so in a sense, his relationship with diane was just that. He saw him and her in the context of the relationship vs them as individuals. What I liked about this relationship was it wasn’t just compromise, avoiding difficult conversations and toxic positivity like Mr PB. They weren’t perfect and they had issues. Diane was still anxious and open about her trauma, the way her family treated her. She doesn’t like accepting gifts and she feels worthless. She actually accepts her depression and tries to get better, be happier. Guy sees her at her worst and while he’s not always perfect he genuinely helps her. He encourages her to get better and achieve. The scene where she meets him at the airport, speaks volume. Guy clearly has some issues from his divorce, wanting to support his son etc but cares. He’s imperfect but he’s far more emotionally mature and responsible than Mr Pb. They were the better couple and worked so much better ♥️

Unfortunately ideological objection to feeling good is a real thing. When you believe in equality and fairness and also have the courage to look outside your own bubble and see how terrible the rest of the world is (due in part to the actions of the country/society to which you belong), you may reach the conclusion that the right thing to do (in theory) would be to abandon all your blessings and go live among the impoverished in the name of equality. I was more or less on the brink of reaching said conclusion when I suddenly realized that I don’t care whether it’s the right thing to do, there is no way I’m just gonna not choose to live the best life available to me. This realization of the limits of my moral willpower was a big moment for me, and it helped me grow in two other areas associated with morality: humility and mercy
