This is the eponymous “light bulb scene”. It’s where bojack starts to see that his life and philbert’s are so similar. Philbert says “there’s nothing lonelier than a party.” Guess who’s so lonely he threw a party?

"The most important thing is you gotta give the people what they want. Even if it kills you. Even if it empties you out until there's nothing left to empty. 0:05 I just love how Rami Malek delivers that line 😊
one of the most powerful scenes in the whole series. that fish is killing herself for superficial reasons. Bojack is confronting his own mortality. and to top it all off, Flip is oblivious and only interested in the money and clout he may gain. Los Ageless was a brilliant song choice too, it sounds like wind making one’s eyes tear up and sting. it’s all just epic and tragic...

OK, I'm a dumbass. I've seen the show twice and I never even connected the dots about the fish basically drowning herself with a smile on her face for others' entertainment.
@SmileytheSmileАй бұрын
You know, in retrospect, I'm changing what I think this scene means. Bojack is drowning for the entirety of the show, water has been the symbol of his shittiness and such since the first time we've seen the opening sequence. What's different about season 5 is that season 4 was actually an uphill walk for Bojack. He was doing a decent job of being an OK person, he let his mother go out in peace instead of using the seasonal "fuck you" on her as he intended, he helped his sister find her mother and was doing OK with his other relationships. In season 5, he also has a show to star in and a potential girlfriend in Gena. Life is somewhat OK. He is out of the pool. But he's been living there his entire life, now he is in a new world without a way to breathe and his challenge for the season was to not dive back in. Him suffocating himself for our entertainment is actually the good thing for him. He has to learn to live on land or dive back into comfortable misery and drown with the rest of his family. ... And as we can see from this season's episode 11... he failed.

At the end of this episode, Bojack is told "...it's not about you, you know. It's Philbert." . Doesn't it feel like the director is indirectly speaking to the audience, telling them not to take Bojack so seriously since "It's not about them, you know... It's Bojack." ?
@JohnRRyder4 жыл бұрын
I like that thought. I also feel, however, that they must understand WHY people take it so seriously. Sure, it's just a tv show at the end of the day, but when it describes things in such detail and covers things like dementia so well... ...well, it sticks with people, you know? Maybe that's part of their message though, to try to not let it affect you negatively?

Holy shit, I started watching Bojack a few weeks ago and it's a fucking masterpiece! Also, this fish isn't killing herself, we've already seen plenty of fish out of the water in this show, I've no idea what y'all are talking about
@mr.mondomacho68153 жыл бұрын
It’s relating back to the lesson Bojack learned and then passed onto Sarah Lynn, the idea that you “Don’t Stop Dancing”, no matter what. The fish is literally out of water, out of her comfort zone i order to dance and entertain others, all while she is smiling for them. In a sense, she is slowly dying, but continuing to dance for others. And in that moment, Bojack watches and can’t help but feel kinship as he too is dying inside.
@MrHarry373 жыл бұрын

I hate that people are parading the symbolism in this scene around like it's well written. So, apparently, this scene ends like this because the fish girl needs water to survive, so, by being out of the water to dance, she's slowly killing herself for a dumb reason, like Bojack is slowly, unnecessarily draining himself with his lifestyle, and he's first noticing that in this scene. That sounds nice on paper, but, in reality, it doesn't work with the logic they laid out in the show. The show never specifies that the aquatic creatures of this universe need water to survive. We occasionally see aquatic creatures existing on land with no problem. There was that one constant on the butt judge show (idr what it was called), and they show a squid on land in... this same episode, iirc. I think they were making a joke about prop blood squibs. Either way, the symbolism simply doesn't work because they never established that what the fish girl is doing here is harmful to her. This show isn't as deep as you all think it is, stop looking for meaning where there isn't any. You're like English teachers trying to squeeze some meaning out of an author saying "the sky is blue".
