In the interests of serious historical research, The Bloke takes a number of bolt-action rifles up-close and personal, at about 10m, to illustrate an often completely forgotten aspect of bolt-action rifle shooting: what do you do between normal ranges and use of the bayonet? Was the middle finger technique officially taught?

Nice work! Space guns are cool (i have one) but milsurps(i have many) are THE BEST! I been smashing 500m gong at local range with my SMLE of late, love it! Waiting for a chance to get my "new" no4 out for a shot and see how much i can bring groups down with peep! Dragging her out tomorrow, but in the dark and limited to 200m :( Probably spend most time shooting my also "new" Martini Enfield anyways. Wish we had 3 gun matches here, id do the same as you, probably come last though, not that i give a fruit!

it's more that when the rifles were made, the ideas of shooting in line formation and using the bayonet to fend off cavalry were still strong, so they had to keep the rifle long fore the former and the bayonet on the gun for the second, they figured out that they could optimize the gun for shooting with the bayonet on and that manner to zero the guns stuck for the length of the production

Just goes to show there was a reason why the Enfield soldiered through Korea when nearly everyone else had converted to semi auto. The rates of accurate fire you can accomplish made it still a viable option. I mean 9 rounds on target in under ten seconds is pretty bloody good!
@SPAZTICCYTOPLASM
@SPAZTICCYTOPLASM 6 жыл бұрын
The mad minute is not very applicable in actual use. The reason it was carried through Korea is money, same reason the Canadian rangers where using it until 2012 or so, and the Indians still use it. I love the lee enfield and it objectively is faster than the mausers and most other bolt actions, but not practically substantially so. When you have to snap engage to multiple targets, you will realize how awful a bolt action is to even an early semi auto. I would take my SVT 40 even with the legal restriction to 5 rounds and garbage clips, over my no4 any day. 5 rounds semi auto is much faster practically than 10 rounds bolt action. You appreciate it when you do a 2 guns, try it out it's eye opening.

Eh, a 1917 or a P14 is what i consider the best, you basicly have the best of both Mauser and enfield, sights that where 30 years ahead of everything else and a stupid strong action, other then being modestly over barreled, on a technical level it's a superior product to the Lee-Enfield, makes sense considering the P14 was going to replace all SMLE's at one point before WW1 basically bankrupt the Empire and basically made the SMLE and later No4 fight on a bit past their expiration date. also 30-06>303.
@dunxy
@dunxy 6 жыл бұрын
I guess technically the p14 is a superior rifle on paper,I still choose my good ol SMLE though because sometimes just because something is technically better does not make it the best.I don't know why so much hate for 303, sure its a dated cartridge but i wonder if all the haters have ever actually shot it or they just go of the horror stories of constant rim jams, which i have never personally experienced on any Lee Enfield shooting PPU. I guess its possibly with older milsurp ammo that people get these horror issues, that crap goes nowhere near my rifles though, got a few boxs i might end up re-loading them and shooting to see if the older cases rim jam just for shits and giggles! As far as effectiveness goes i dont think theres enough in it to matter.

I've have been shooting a 1917 No.1 MkIII* for some 39 years, in fact it was the very first centerfire rifle I ever shot. In those years with many many rounds down range in many mad minutes, I've yet to have a rim jam. Love your Mauser's if you like but that SMLE got the job done for fifty years of soldering in the Empire and Commonwealth. Even longer in India with their 7.62x51 versions.

Yeah, the problem with your Mauser was that crappy Romanian steel cased ammo. It amazes me that your rifle even chambers that stuff! Unfortunately, I’ve never encountered a Lee-pattern rifle where I live (Indiana, USA), though I’d love to handle one to experience its legendary smoothness in person. However, I do have easy access to Mauser patten rifles, including the 1903 Springfield (if you want to call it a Mauser). My experience has been that 1903 rifles, though Mauser-derived, are far smoother to operate than genuine Mausers. I’m not sure Bloke has had many opportunities to handle an ‘03 in Europe, but I’m curious whether it would have fared any better than the Manky Mauser in rapid fire. And I’m very curious how it would have compared to a Lee-Enfield.
@sullivanrachael
@sullivanrachael 5 жыл бұрын
joeman2551 speaking from practical experience with my own .30-06, K98ks and No4; as a speed machine the Lee wins. Put simply the Mauser based action has a longer bolt travel back and forth, so you have to take your head off the stock, and a 90 degree bolt lift not 60. It’s just a longer distance. The .303 is a bit less powerful than 8mm or .30-06 but in this comparison the less recoil with .303 is offset by the No4 being a lighter rifle. BTW - as a target rifle I prefer a 1903 anyway.

Good video and excellent point to be made. Combat rifles are used up close as well as long range (whatever that may be). The only thought I have is for belligerents up close, one should use more than one target. Part of the problem is to direct one's fire at more than one adversary. Ideally I would arrange ten targets (I prefer the rectangular IPSC target, but the one used in this video would do nicely) at ranges from three to twelve meters. However, I am aware this would not be possible on the range shown. At least I would use two targets of slightly different ranges, about one to one and one half meters apart and a difference in height of center of target. Shoot as shown, but alternating targets. Part of the problem is hitting the targets and one is not going to fire ten rounds (of any of those cartridges) on the same adversary in succession. One hopes.

That sounds like fun. Maybe stand in a disused quarry with friends randomly pushing rocks down off the lip. Hit a whole rock after it bounces to score a point.
@OldManMontgomery
@OldManMontgomery 3 жыл бұрын
@@myparceltape1169 Yes, but stand by for howls by those who fear ricochets from everything. Seriously, rifle bullets striking a hard surface either break up into small pieces and fly tangentially to the surface stuck (which on a moving rock is impossible to pre-determine) or be deflected by a curved surface at most any angle, often an angle not appreciated the shooter or onlookers. Also be aware shooting in any area with a multitude of rock or rocky outcroppings can produce this effect with any shoot that doesn't hit something to absorb the bullet. (Dirt is best, I recommend between four and ninety-seven feet of tight packed dirt depending on the round employed.) Again, many ranges will scream but I think good "odd" targets are gallon jugs (from milk, orange drink and so forth) tossed about four to six feet in the air by a hypothetical device. No trajectory like a clay pigeon, just up and down. With rifles, not more than fifty yards or so away. Fifteen or twenty yards might be hard enough. Again, one's back stop needs to be both wide and high. And devoid of anything that would deflect a bullet. Or lots of distance - say a couple miles where no one goes. I agree, shooting at rolling rocks would be fun. No place near me to do it safely of which I'm aware.

@@OldManMontgomery I had thought 1) you were based in the USA , 2) stand 100 yards away from. the rock face and 3) make sure the pushers of rock stay well away from the edge. They can use long poles. I don't know about you, but I have seen rock drop off its overhanging position and shatter on a water-worn boulder about 60 to 80 feet below as much as 30 feet from us. My friends and I had been in the area several times and nothing fell, nor did we expect it to. So make them stay away safe. Most quarries are well away from habitation but I most certainly take your point about flying fragments. It is dangerous.

@@myparceltape1169 Just to remove doubt: I was born in the United States, I have lived all my life (minus a trip to Europe and some time in the Orient) and have always worked in the U. S. Please forgive my manner of expressing myself. I think in general terms in relating to others. Your circumstance is of course, seen by you (and your friends). You (all) must decide what is safe for you all. I made the comment about a hard dirt backstop of thickness as appropriate. Most of the Armed Services firearms ranges use a 'backstop' of several miles of fenced and posted (empty) areas. Living (or just shooting) in an uninhabited area changes the situation. I live in inhabited areas where shooting is legal but stray rounds must be prevented. Ricochets and such endanger the shooter(s), of course. You're on your own in many regards. As is most of life. Make up your own mind and good luck.

@@OldManMontgomery Thank you. So far as I know our militaries train in remote or protected areas, perhaps use the sea as a backstop though I have watched bombing runs where they suddenly appeared over a hill and dived at the beach before breaking off. Safety should be a concern and for a time so many of our aircraft were being lost with their pilots on training runs that I thought it would be better all round not to fly except during war. Are old primers made differently that promotes hang fire, or do modern primers hang fire as well after being stored away for 70 years?
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 6 жыл бұрын
Winchester developed a much superior priming compound mid WWII. They gave it free of charge to the allies, and it was a massive step up. It was non -corrsosive, easier to manufacture, more stable and gave more consistent output of heat and pressure. It really was a leap up, and it took a while for all of the allies to get on board because it was a guarded secret, and also because they were used to their previous methods of manufacture. Keep in mind it is also the propellants. Old 303 ammo uses cordite, which looks like spaghetti, and does significantly change over time. The same was true for the older single based and double based nitro type powders to a reduced degree. They off gas over time and reduce potency, or perhaps increase. Modern powders are more stable to age and temperature, etc. Old cordite and old type primers were pretty bad. The early semi smokeless powders seemed to go bad at around 3-4 years which gave the french a fair amount of problems when older lebel ammo got pulled out of the attic during WWI.

Was it also really used or just taught as a possible use? Also in a squad you would have at least one person with a sub gun wouldn't you? Also wasn't the reason why the sub gun was invented because bolt actions are not really good in close quarters?

+Lt Joker - Agreed, in any group of people doing any job with any tool, there will always be people looking for easier/faster/more efficient ways of doing the job and occasionally even suggesting re-designs to make the job unnecessary in the first place. Competition to be most accurate and/or quickest will also happen.

This sort of close range rapid-fire is mentioned in memoirs. George MacDonald Fraser, in "Quartered Safe Out Here", mentions doing a close-range "double-tap" with a Lee Enfield, though I can't recall if it was the middle-finger method. I reckon it would be shooting to put your man down, and one more for luck, rather than emptying a magazine. As for the SMG, the Russians did equip whole battalions with the SMG replacing rifles, but the section did apparently have an LMG. This may be an experience that led to the way the Dragunov rifle was used, designated marksman in every section rather than specialist snipers

Dave, russian snipers during the war were commonly apart of the infantry. That means they were directly involved in the fighting. Having a scoped bolt action was not ideal and was used until the 60's when it was replaced by the SVD. The SVD had specific requirements to meet as the sniper was still fully expected to take part in the fighting with their unit. So in short it replaced a specific weapon, not the role of a sniper.

I think the lesson here - the intermediate cartridge wins at shorter ranges.... 7.62x39 has less recoil, shorter length of reciprocating bolt travel; hence the lovely frankenrifle wins as it kicks less

Bloke on the Range - thanks for the reply and thanks for a great channel. I guess you just showed that the intermediate cartridge idea was a very effective solution! (Less recoil, weight, cost to manufacture, albeit at a price in terms of terminal effect beyond ~ 500yds)

I love the frankin rifle. Currently doing something similar with a mosin. So far so good on that. As for your K31 performance, it is a favorite of mine and I have fired 6 rnds in a tad over 4 sec, 25 yards at the center square of an American B21 target with 6 good hits. But I also shoot the 31 alot..

They have no primary extraction, which is what screwed them over in a war. Lee chambers are also oversized. I have a ross sporter no problems with factory ammo, but it will absolutely shit the bed with cases that have been reloaded 5 or 6 times.

I wish someone else will try to make modern Lee actions, bored to tears of all these new Mauser clones and something in .223 or .300 blk or even 7.62 would be an excellent and fun varmint hunting and plinking rifle.

It probably would be a fairly easy conversion. There's a guy named russel houghton on youtube who has done a few carcano to 7.62x39 conversions. p.s. Private rant: using "7.62" as a caliber designation is really annoying. It's like identifying a model of car by saying "4 wheels". 9mm has one overwhelmingly popular choice, so people generally know that if you say "9mm" you mean 9mm parabellum (AKA whatever) rather than 9mm Kurz or Makarov, or Largo, or 38 special... But with 7.62, you've narrowed it down to only the most popular rifle diameter ever. Even with popular current widespread use military calibers that are mostly known by metric designations, there is genuine ambiguity between ""x54r, ""Nato, ""x39.

I would like to point out that this is not CQB. It's still just staying in on place and shooting as fast as you can. If you have one available to you, I would love to see you compare them in a CQB course and see which one makes it through the fastest, as that would be a more accurate test. This is really, just like all your other, "which one is faster" videos. And in a stationary position, we all know the Enfield is king, but how does it compare in a run and gun where you have to take a shot and reload behind cover and on the run?
