A handy tip for cutting down machine screws, put then into the combi drill chuck at the desired length, hold the hacksaw against the end of chuck and spin the drill anti clockwise.

That's a great tip, thank you. I've struggled with drilling accurate holes for these handles in the past, and have also seen so many customers where the long screws have been left of then the small trim screws fail and ruin the door. I have 11 doors to do in a house soon so. 👍🏻

Just fitted 7 bang same doors & the identical handle and your "fishing 🎣" analogy is bang on 🤣 I had 2 bathroom locks with thumb turns so was twice the flustrasion 😡 trying to get the through bots to line up spent far too long messing around with them. Great video 👍 thanks for the great tip.

Just fitted the same handles and latch to same doors but without the aid of your video I didn't think I could fit the outer through bolt as I thought it would go through the latch. I can now go back tomorrow and complete the job. And as I have four more doors to fit I will make a jig. Many thanks for the video.

Hi del you saved me today got asked to go to job in knightsbridge today and fit door furniture on high quality polished panel doors worth fortunes one slip and run bolt through high end handles had gig i bought on eBay but i didn’t fit lockes etc so couldn’t trust them to be square to door edge then remembered your video brilliant simple worked perfectly been in game now 50 years and still learning any youngsters i meet who are coming into our trade I always tell them if you get stuck with anything go on your channel I know you and i both think its very important to pass on our knowledge sorry gone on a bit but i do a lot of cut roofs in north London and saw dans roofing jig but im left handed and wondered if it would suit me thanks

That's a great little jig. Another good idea to speed up lining up the pesky screws is to push a straw in hole first so it acts as sleeve. I'm definitely keeping a few straws in my box now.

Great idea. Will make one for my remaining doors. The only problem I had was spindle hole size as I commented in previous vid. I opted for 19mm instead of 20mm recommend but when the bolts were nipped up circlip and washer on the back of the rose protrudes and binds. I ended up running a burr around the spindle hole to accommodate the circlip. I doubt the 20mm recommended would have cleared it. Thanks again👍

There's a way without having to feel around with the screw. With the handle off and the spindle in one handle, put the long screws in the door handle holes and thread both the metal rods on about 3 or 4 turns. Now you can just push that handle and the 2 rods all the way through to the other side, with enough to make the ends of the rods poke out the 2 holes on the other side. At least on my door the rods could poke out, they taper slightly thinner at the ends. This way there isn't any feeling around for the hole inside the door - the rod is there poking out - you can just put the short screws in the other handle and be able to see the ends get screwed in.

Good vid!.. I do the same technique.. although I made a jig out of MDF with the same 40mm holes and bolt hole it wraps around both sides of the door and has the non slip car mats on the inside and I clamp them in place.. great minds!

That jig idea is so sleek that you could just drill the screw dia one side of door and the drill barrel dia hole other side...but useful tips from video and all comments...Thank you

I'd say you were lucky thus time, I went fishing for half an hour on my last handle. Success came when I switched sides for some reason, and fished from the left instead of the right

wish i'd have seen this a few weeks ago. I am a complete novice. I have 17 doors to hang in my house, i made a hinge jig, a lock jig, but for some unknown reason ( in hindsight) i was freestyling this like a fool! thankfully i have only done 5 doors so far.

Lovely job. What latches would suit a 1939 door for bolt-through handles 38mm apart? I used one I picked up and mangled the first door fitting it. Old latches were quite shallow so I would prefer a small/shallow one. .

The right latch. Kept wondering why I could never get the bolts through. Latch was always in the way.

Put the screw in to the chuck of the drill put the hacksaw against the screw and forward with the cordless 👌👌👌👌👌.

Fitted a few Jedo handles they had a sleeve sits in the centre with 2 female ends so much easier can fiddly especially before tea time 🫖

Great video. Some electricians linesman’s pliers have integrated bolt cutters for shortening machine screws. We use them when fitting pattress boxes/ light switches/plug switches. The screw screws in and is cut with the action of the plier, you then screw the screw out which maintains the screw thread. This would save you so much time with guess work and filing down post cut. Thanks for a great video, I’ve got some door handles to fit and your channel has been so useful.

Hi Del. Right video this time. So use a jig to get through bolts. But then you get this sort of nonsense. You have done the holes square, put the handle level(square to the door) but now the bloody holes in the handle are not in the square position, they are cocked over a d you have a right job to get the handle right.

I like your simple, easy to understand videos, and your non-condescending attitude to us viewers. I have a question though - when it comes to fitting the handles, couldn't you just attach the handles to the spindles, then attach them to the door by the three screws, THEN mark and drill the two bolt-through holes (from one side if one is careful not to break out the other side), remove the 3 screws and then fit the two bolts, then screw the three screws back to finish up the handle? Or am I being dumb? I am a DIY'er with a little experience, and I have 8 of these exact doors to fit, with corresponding bolt-through handles almost identical to the ones you fitted, so am somewhat apprehensive. Also, what size auger would you suggest for the spindle and and mechnism, and could I use a spade bit instead of an auger bit? Oh yeah, I've subscribed! Cheers.

Great idea , but iv fucked around with them bolts longer than it takes to swing the door they don’t even screw in when there in your hands so they go in the bin😂 great vid mate 👍

Have you had the handle where the rose won't go past the handle! What a bloody pain especially when the spindle to hole locations weren't accurate enough for template/jig. Had to cut a pencil to 18mm long and hold with a pair of pliers. It was crazy. Took soooo long.😖 Ironmongery and materials my biggest bugbear for the last decade.

Excellent content. Fitting with non-connecting screws should be illegal imo. Atleast the handles should only be sold with connecting bolts. I recently got locked in through that, but luckily there was no emergency Tell me if you agree

I have a question, can you use a hammer drill on the door frame to chisel out a indentation for the strike plate?

I'm struggling with the bolts, preexisting holes every 18 months I'm fiddling about trying to fix handles hanging off the door with tiny screws. I bought new latches in order to fix back to back bolts but the handles line up with the holes making it difficult to get a screwdriver in.

I had a hell of a job lining the screws up... couldn't find the female end with the bolt... finicky work! I ended up with stub screws on one door instead! Retirement on the cards!🤣

If I'm correct the bolt through are for hollow doors, for solid doors you can use just the 3 screws like ordinary handles

Probably a stupid question but how does the screw nearest the lock edge pass the mechanism inside the door?

Nice one Mr tall but you didn’t show the bit were you had to cut down the anti turn screws because they were to long and hit the latch body 😜

Iv always wandered why they dont alternate the hole position on the handles on each side so you could put thicker screw in door as you can only put a screw half thickness of door sondont hit other side screw. Ive got young kids and they nearly hanf off the door handles and have to keep tightening at times
