I'd worry about someone hacking it. There was a guy who did a serious security investigation about butt-plugs and came to some rather terrifying conclusions. Although the talk started with some tongue-in-cheek jokes, it very quickly turned serious and the viewers were made to have concern for the people who use the devices, as a hacker could do such dangerous things as rewrite the BMS firmware and overheat the battery *while the thing is in use*. I caution any performer against using any kind of wireless-enabled device.

In defence of the hollow shaft... We'll often spec them for aircraft components to save weight, and seeing as that's a reciprocating part, as long as it's designed to cope with any expected load, it will put less stress on the rest of the contraption and require a smaller counterweight to balance the rotation, further lowering the weight to the user.

Because most men don't fix things on the regular anymore, therefore most tools don't need to be built with lasting quality in mind. Take your ever-growing population of condo schmucks with zero practical every-day skills, how often does one of them have to fix things around the house? Screw that, call a handyman, pay the $200, go back to Netflix/Facebook. Companies figured this out in the 90s and 00s, at the same time they figured out that those bulletproof freaking war machine grade tools they were churning out in the 50s-70s were going to last the average homeowner a lifetime. If it don't break you don't sell, if you don't sell you don't eat. Simple. I have a Black&Decker corded drill that used to be my uncle's. He drilled enough holes with that thing to be the carpentry equivalent of Peter North and Ron Jeremy combined. It's beat up to shit externally, but guess what? - cord is fine - stress relief boot is fine - chuck is fuckin' AAA+ - torque is still good - motor still kicks in like a mule - it still puts holes in brick, concrete, steel, and masonry like nobody's business. It's fifty fucken years old. FIFTY! And it just works! Black&Decker had my uncle as a customer ONCE in his life. No wonder greedy corporate pricks turned everything into low cost chinesium garbage. If a working man used to make a drill last a whole lifetime, today's pecker slapper condo dwellers can probably pass a good drill four generations into the future.

@MtnBadger
@MtnBadger 2 жыл бұрын
My wife got me an inexpensive version of one of these for Christmas. It functions, is. The pressure with which you push makes it change and do weird stuff because the "thumpinator" in the thing just doesn't have enough oomph to fight back. Is it intentionally "pressure regulated?" The manufacturer might try to say so but, no. It has 5 intensity levels and I often stay on the lower two and, depending upon the angle at which you push down on the end ,as in holding the machine sideways and pushing the working end into your muscle, the more consistent the "thump" and less likely it is to "freak out" and loose its chooch (what'd'ya want for about 1/20th of the price?). Would I recommend one? Maybe the $79 one would give a little more consistent/predictable/functionality but, the really cheap ones... They're OK, as long as you expect what you're going to get. A weaker motor with less control-ability and something you have to "work with" to get close to the desired results. In other words, the thing works at a base level of the definition "works." If that's all you can afford, "it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick." As my dear old ma used to say. "A dull stick, may be OK. " If you got it, buy the $80 unit and pray.

I got the cheaper verison (Elite, not the Pro) after buying a $90 Amazon Special. The Amazon Special was more of a vibrator than an impact tool, never got deep enough into the muscle to actually do anything useful, and rattled itself to pieces within a couple of months of use. I took it apart, lubed it, epoxied the bits that had fallen off, and i use it as a backup. The Theragun has been great so far. Far more power, less rattle, etc. I do worry about the fact they give you zero option to maintain it yourself, especially on something that is obviously at some point going to need lubrication, but i think it was worth the money overall.

@Ave A lot of people don’t understand how this works. They think it’s a massager but that’s just the term used so that all of the other people that don’t understand anatomy and physiology can grasp what this does. When you have a “knot“ under the skin in your muscles, you have soreness from working out, or your muscles are tight… There’s several things that have occurred. One of them, which is one of the primary causes, is lactic acid buildup. This is in addition to other things but for layman‘s terms we’re going to keep it simple. You could knead and massage the area yourself, but your hands get tired very quickly and are only so effective. Since the fastest way to move things inside the body is by using blood, that is what this device relies on essentially. When a percussion occurs repeatedly impacting the skin, on a subcutaneous level it draws blood to the area. That’s one of the reasons why the area where you use may turn slightly red. It’s blood rushing to the area, and by doing this your body also draws the blood away afterwards and with it the lactic acid among other things. This helps to remove some of the lactic acid and help the body to expedite reducing inflammation, and removing things that are causing the pain/tension/knots, etc. So in the case of this device: it’s not just a massager, it actually has a significant physiological benefit. There’s a reason it’s popular, and devices like this. And it’s not just because it’s hype. Devices like this have been used for years and years, especially by chiropractors, physical therapists, massage therapists, etc. But only in the past few years has a personalized, small, handheld device for a personal use become available. And that is what makes this so popular because it is not only effective, but portable and for personal use.

BTW I was recommended one of these a little over a year ago for my back, I have a T7,T8,T9 compression fracture, and it does help...I also used it when I tore my achilles to loosen the muscles when I rehabbed...it works...looks funny how could it not be a joke, but it does what it’s ment to do. Sadly seeing how it’s constructed is mind blowing.

I work for Mar-Bal in NE Ohio and we make glass reinforced composite products. It does wear out the tooling quicker but not as fast as you'd think. It all depends on the glasd fiber content and how polished the tool is. We have a few molds that are over 40 years old and operate at least 2 shifts a day with only minor repair.

It’d be interesting to see if the hollow shaft was a chunk of tube or a piece of stock drilled out. My guess is that by reducing the mass of the reciprocating bits they were able to reduce the size of the counterweight, saving material, reducing weight for their chiropractic practitioners, and reducing fatigue induced vibration numbness..? Just thinking they may have done that intentionally. Could you put the tachometer tape on that thing and see if tach gun can register some cycles per minute? At the apparent speed of operation it looks like there’s a fair amount of physics involved with that tiny bearing and the dynamic loads it is seeing. The original probably had a solid shaft but it kept blowing the bearings up and the only way to fix it was redesign it with bigger bearings and counterweights,housings etc or lighten it up.
@reedphillips5675
@reedphillips5675 3 жыл бұрын
My guess is the hollow shaft could be for mass reduction in the moving assembly as to reduce inertia and the fatigue load on the bearing and pivot shaft as well as reduce load on the motor. Seems like it would be easier to make with a solid shaft, so I think there must be some other reason.

The CC2541 you pointed out is a BT chip... you're spot on with your theory. Just pulling the wank off their website: "The Therabody app integrates with Apple Health and Google Fit, learning from your behaviors to suggest guided routines that can be sent to your device via Bluetooth®." Dunno whether you've got the newest one or whether it's always had the features but I can see this also being a case of having one BOM and multiple tiers/versions of software. Hardware was ready before the software, now they get to sell the "new version" with just an app update/firmware flash.
