Used to call these "fourty fives" when I was a kid, rather obviously, because you're trying to enter the water at a 45 degree angle so as to break the surface tension of the water with the smallest portion of your feet. Once below the waters surface, mostly you're hips should go limp which will allow your legs to remain straight but also allow them to begin pointing back up creating a "V" shape with your body while trying to keep your back in the same position the entire time (still at a 45 degree angle). This 90 degree angle you've created with your body causes a vacuum in the water around your belly button and gets bigger as the rest of your body enters the water. Once completely under the water try to limit how deep you go by going completely flat and horizontal. All of these actions create taller splashes and if done perfectly will mostly splash upwards in a tower of water instead of in every direction like the resulting splash of a cannonball. I tried keeping my hands at my side and "coffin style" as shown in this video before many times, however the most satisfying "spl-lun-sh-whump" thump sound you hear while underwater is best created by covering your face as demonstrated in this video once. There has got to be a hydro-dynamic reason for the face being covered creating that phenomenon, and from what I'm told also looks better because the tower of water seems to come out of nowhere. Good for you guys helping others make a big splash at the pool by showing the different techniques to try. This type of jump was always a more impressive (and dangerous looking) splash to people that had not seen it done. Many times I had to give this jump a name because so many people asked me what the heck I just did, and the only name I ever heard it given was "it's a 45". I kind of like the name "coffin". However that should be reserved for this move while crossing wrists in front of the chest, just because it makes more sense because of how it looks. I feel this jump is basically a purer, more hydro dynamic, version of the can opener, sometimes called a Jack knife. (Most people who try the can opener forget to lean back and end up with a messed up toothpick) By the way, I also wanted to suggest that you try to pivot your entire body 180 or even 90 degrees in the other direction so that you are facing the platform or facing to your right or left. As opposed to entering the water feet first and then "sinking too fast" pivoting your body will negate the body beginning to "sink too fast" as you don't want to go too deep, too fast as you would with a "toothpick" jump. If you face the opposite direction your heels are sort of dragged along the top of the water ever so briefly just as you enter the water. Doing this slows your lateral movement you initiated by jumping "away" from the platform but does not slow your movement directly down into the water which, again, uses the kinetic energy of the splash to create an upward splash instead of a typical "cannonball" type splash.
