Technically because it takes time to confirm a person's illegibility. On one hand, I can understand that waiting until right before the election and trying to rush it through might not be the best idea. In reality, the idea that there are enough fraudulent registrants to effect an election, or that they can't be corrected, is pretty ridiculous.

I am of the opinion that the Constitution imbues us with automatic registration. If we show ID then that should be enough. Student IDs should be enough as they are harder and more expensive to get.

The one thing republicans are good at is sticking to a plan long term no matter what, and the whole party follows the same talking points.
