So many in poverty. The story goes. Ben Cartwright was a proud humble man. Who never took from anyone, worked for his dream and helped everyone in his path, while raising 3 sons to do the same. Well educated and so were his sons. The show was a fine example of morals and values and work ethic

Hoss has always been my favorite. If this series were real, and if I could visit the Ponderosa, Hoss is the son I would've fallen in love with and hopefully married. He's like me, bringing home stray animals to help. I like Little Joe, but Hoss is my absolute favorite. ❤️ I'm not sure why so many people like Adam most? He's third to me.

Yeah, that's one of the great lines of all time...Hoss's delivery was perfect...he had a way about him....I noticed the same thing when Joe put down a saloon girl, and Ben stuck up for her by saying 'I thought she was very nice.' He asked Hoss for his opinion, and Hoss instantly just repeated what Ben had said! ' I thought she was very nice'. It was so clear that he sensed Ben being irritated at Joe's attitude towards the girl, and Hoss wanted to remove himself from the line of fire...Hoss was priceless....As with all actors who are good at playing characters who can be a bit slow or naive, Blocker had to have been brilliant to pull off some of these lines the way he did...

Well, I'm black. I see the fictitious narrative being espoused here. As a young boy, I took Bonanza to heart. Conducted myself, as best as possible to Cartwright-isms. In high school I faced direct racism to my face, from my white teacher. From that moment going forward, I was forced to deal with race and prejudice to direct to my face. This is the reality of growing up black in America. The Cartwrights put forth FICTION. When Adam shows any wisdom, insight, sensitivity, here's daddy Ben shaking his head in disapproval toward Adam. No blacks on Bonanza. No black hired hands. The mere existence of blacks ignored. Yep. Bonanza is a complete fiction. A narrative that doesn't exist in real life. Critical Race Theory is more honest. But whites will not let go of the warm and fuzzy Bonanza, The Big Valley, or Little House on the Praire.

In the history of American television no other western ever topped Bonanza. I also feel, that remakes of old movies never live up to the original movies. For this reason when they tried to revive Bonanza with Michael Landon's son, as Little Joe, the show never had a chance.

Another great episode. The only thing that's got me scratching my chin is how the shiftless, cattle rustling, land grabbing Josh made the transition to heroic family man. He sure started off mean as a bull, launching a totally unprovoked attack on Ben Cartwright at the start. As always Ben is such a fine man. Good fun. Hoss must have been heavy to be carried like that. Read that he was 14 lbs. at berth and 100 lbs. in 1st grade. During filming during 1 season he fell off his horse and broke his collar bone. Got up and set it and finished filming. Afterwards got looked at and took 6 weeks recuperation. When he returned he was too heavy for his horse.

He broke his collar bone when his horse stumbled over Pernell's horse, when it slipped in the mud. both jumped, as trained. Pernell got a wrenched neck and the big guy got his collar bone broken. all four were offered extra riding lesson's for safety, only Joe and Hoss took up the offer.

It's a good quesiton and one I've pondered too. And they did have several ranch hands because in some episodes it shows their bunk house and what it's like to live there. From a writing perspective it makes the show more suspenseful since if they unleashed a posse of ranch hands every time there was trouble it would be too easy. There is really no in story answer for it though, just a plot hole.

Bonanza has never been shy about using sudden character changes to wrap up an episode. 90% of the time it's the bad guy goes crazy and does something really stupid when he didn't have to and that solves the Cartwrights' problems for them.

13:49 How are you "being mighty careful" by all going into a potential box canyon together? During the opening, I thought that "the rescue" was going to be rescuing Ben, now I expect Ben to rescue the sons, proving that he's not too old. 15:30 Adam: "In & out slick & clean" by looking only at the top. Trapper John MD would be disgusted by that nonsense! :D 16:07 Then they gather together. Not the best strategic move. :D OK. "at least we did one thing." was funny. :D 34:40 Ben, Why are you letting the other shooter know that you are there?! Just pick him off like the other guy. 34:51 Say Whaat?! Ben's going to join his pinned down boys?! That's the most ridiculous thing that I've ever seen. Well, actually kinda common. Shows how little writers think of the audience's intelligence. OK. Made for a humorous heartwarming ending. I'll forgive the writers. :D Earlier, I had wished that the old man hadn't mentioned 40 head of cattle because then when he met Ben on the trail he could have joined Ben to help him rescue his boys rather than being the rustler. The son bringing the hide to the house to eat before he buried it also didn't make any sense. Could have made sense if the boy said "I want to tan this one. It's a beauty!" and then the father said "Oh no you don't!
