Having once, unexpectedly whilst drunk, fallen into water I can sympathise with Harrison. However, everyone who has gained confidence in the water and been taught to swim from an early age has supreme confidence in the water. They maintain their 'mammalian diving reaction', instinctively take a deep breath before being submerged and can easily remain submerged for two minutes. There are pearl diving tribes who can remain submerged for ten minutes. As a skinny teenager in 1960s UK swimming pools the occasional, heavyweight bully would attempt to submerge me. I automatically took a deep breath, rolled us over and pushed them deeper. I could calmly last for at least two minutes under water despite the physical effort. They were spluttering and fighting within fifteen seconds. One down, half a dozen more to teach a lesson! Even when I, stupidly, dived too deep for too long I did not panic; lungs bursting I would trick my body by slowly exhaling.

You really don't. Methoxyflurane is banned almost everywhere except Commonwealth countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the UK because it can cause your liver and/or kidneys to shut down and kill you. Other countries use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) instead, because it's much safer.

Dude you obviously dont know what drowning feels like. I was that kid who'd jump into the deep before thinking ''oh right I cant swim'' and when my sister came to the rescue I was panicking so much just trying to get back up and grasp some air so I pulled her down under aswell with my own weight, then my mother jumped in for the rescue and we both pulled her down, thats when a guard saved all 3 of us asses all because of my fault. Drowning is a bitch and ur body just does whatever at that point.

@Aspen Lopez you do realise that asia is a continent right? There's more countries than one in Asia, and most have beaches. The reason some asians aren't good swimmers is because they, as you said, don't know how to swim our currents, and some of the countries in Asia have beaches filled with too much pollution that they're unable to swim there. So yes, they do have beaches, but not all of them can use them.

Aspen Lopez ??? Asia is full of beaches. It’s a continent. Korea is surrounded by water and has so many islands that if you went to one a day, it would take you 9 years to see them all. They have multiple famous beaches such as the ones in the coastal city of Busan. The REAL reason so many people that need rescue at Bondi is that it’s a very popular tourist destination for them since Korea and Australia are so close to one another, but there are no Korean signs up at Bondi to explain the flag rules or any other safety measures.

I remember when i tried helping my friend from drowning. She don't know how to swim but she still went to the deepest part of the water and i notice that she's struggling. Since i knew how to swim, i jumped into the water and tried to save her by pushing her up and because she's in a panic, she kick me right on my face and in part of my body until i lose my focus and i started to struggle because I started losing my breath too, but still manage to help my friend. People can actually get you killed when they're in the panic situation. All i think about that time while I'm struggling is "this is it, it's up to you Lord", thank God the lifeguard saw me. It's scary but i felt happy as well because she's fine. We just laughed it off after that.

I was in a similar situation a few years back. There was a guy drowning like 3m from the edge of the pool. But I had to jump in because there were lane ropes and he couldn't get over or under them. He was in lane 2 when he started drowning(probably a combo of cramp and panic). He had 4 friends with him that were sitting on the edge chatting. When they saw him drowning, the went to help but he was sinking them all, and they were trying to keep him afloat. When I got in, none of his friends moved so I ended up catching him under one arm(big mistake in my side, and of course he started pushing me down too. Fortunately I was just bobing up and down and trying to push off together with this guy to the edge. Fortunately my colleague saw the whole thing and came to help me. Also a sidenote: we do rescues with bare hands because we don't have rescue tubes. There are rescue rings but we tend not to use them cause there is risk of injury (a.k.a hit in the head) because they are heavy.
@adde9506
@adde9506 4 жыл бұрын
I could be misunderstanding the setup, but if he was in a lane like it sounds, next time I would recommend pushing him toward the lane line instead of trying to hold him up. Obviously getting tubes would be ideal, but if all you have are rings, you don't have to throw them. Swim it in and let the swimmer climb it instead of you. Any which way you made the save, so good on you, great job, and keep up the good work.

My main question is, here in Florida, US. We're always taught to swim horizontal of a rip if you're caught in one. Is it the same at Bondi? If not, what are the differences?
@ava6831
@ava6831 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've been caught in an rip/undertow when there was a big drop off I wasn't aware of and people were telling me to remain calm and swim horizontal at an angle (and I got out of it). But yes I am from Florida and I am always told to swim horizontal at an angle if ever caught in one (I go to the beach a lot and I like to catch waves when available so I have become quite familiar with that. But I do wonder what it's like there at Bondi and if it is most people don't know that if they're tourists, maybe they should put up a sign? But then again Florida beaches are different from Bondi beaches.

it's the same here, horizontal to get out of it. Or let it take you out (it will only take you out to the back of the waves) then do the same thing, swim horizontal to the shore.

Yeah as a kid is Australia we were always taught how to identify rips and what to do if you're stuck in one

Yes it is taught, but I am not sure how effective it is for everyone seeing as though these people were literally swimming in front of a Dangerous Currents sign

I had to do this to a small kid in a lake. I was about 13 not an amazing swimmer but good I had to drive in and save this 8 year old who probably weighed more than and then they started to latch on to me to keep them afloat. I can hold my breath for a while so I pushed off the bottom and push them a few feet forward. They didn't realize how deep they got and then lost there footing. After I got them to a point were they can stand and told them to go in more. I got out of the water and yelled at their parent to watch their child. They weren't even far out they were only 10 feet out. And the water was only 6 and a bit feet deep. Some parents need to watch there kids more. Anyways great job bondi!

People need to learn to swim and be safe in the water, Please, make sure you are comfortable in water before you go places like Bondi or Piha (in New Zealand) where the water is dangerous and unpredictable, no matter where you are from, at some point in your life you will come in contact with water, and knowing how to swim could save your life or someone else’s!

A tube is generally enough for a one-person rescue and it has the advantage of being lightweight but for two adults it simply isn't enough.
