Someone who is drowning is in full-blown panic, survival mode and can't control themselves. That's one of the reasons rescuing a drowning person can be so dangerous. So you have to try and kick them away to get them off you, or another good strategy is to submerge, drowning swimmers will let go if you submerge, as they want to stay at the surface. Lifeguards are at risk of being pulled down by drowning person(s) too, that's one of the reasons why they all have those rescue boards with them.

Tip that can save your life: when rescuing a drowning person, always approach them from the back, the likelihood of them pulling you under in a panicked grasp is smaller. However if you find yourself entangled and being submerged, do the opposite of what intuition would tell you: go under with them. The drowning person will let go and you can safely distance yourself. If there's no other choice, let them tire themselves out a bit before lending a helping hand. You can't underestimate the strength and lack of reason someone who thinks they're dying has.

I was told by my first aid class; If you see a swimmer and you want to help him, grab him from behind and tell him to spread his arms and legs to float. Never ever face them, because they will grab your shoulders, push you down and stay above water that way." We were told to kick them away if they tried, and swim to the back, telling them to calm down and approach them only from the back. In Titanic, right after Rose is above water again, one guy pushes her down and does the same thing the first-aid-class explained. It seems to be something that commonly happens.

Fun fact, in order to not drown a potential savior, hold lightly onto their shoulders, it will be enough to keep you afloat while not putting too much strain or weight on the rescuer and allowing them to use their arms and legs to swim.

Yes i have, it was during a summer vacation in Brazil, we were on a medium boat trip around some corals, when the boat stop to let us go for a swim, I don't know why, I swam about 50 or 70 meters away from the boat, then I saw a family of 5(the parents, and 3 little childres) being dragged by the current, so i went to look if i could help (At that time I was sure of my skills as a swimmer, because I was a competitive swimmer), luck for me, at that place there was a rock or a coral to let the family rest, so I started taking the kids to the boat. After the second one, I asked for help, because I didnt think I could make it with the third one, I was so tired. The funny thing is after a week and a half, we met at the airport, and they still remembered me, and they didn't stop thanking me. Looking back i sould have asked for help after the first child was safe at the boat.

My mentor said to get them off because it’s always your safety above them. However I was doing a practice shift a few weeks ago and I ended up almost drowning. If my friend hadn’t saved me I’m not sure I’d be here now.

So, I gave them my board until one of my friends started to FULL ON panic. And he started to push me underwater so I pushed myself down deeper into the water near the ground and watched them splashing up on the surface😂😂. after that, I NEVER invited them to go beach with me after that.

Being drowned by the very person you are trying to rescue is such a real danger. Which is why when I learned a bit of rescue swimming last year, they also teach you different ways to break someone's hold on you and immobilize them for the rescue. They are so scared and panicked they won't listen, they'll just grab and pull on anything or *anyone* that might keep them afloat. Scary as fuck.

Once years ago when my family was at my relatives' house during the summer. My cousin was in the pool BY HIMSELF he was I think 7 years old, everyone was inside the house and I guess completely forgot about him. I don't remember exactly, but I was with my little sister who was younger than him at the time, keeping an eye on her inside the house, and I was 9 at the time. My aunt and uncle(my cousin's parents) were inside the house, NO ONE WAS WATCHING HIM! He was struggling to stay above the water, he almost drowned!!! He luckily was able to get himself to safety out of the pool! His parents should have been out there with him, keeping an eye on him!!! His parents didn't seem to care at all when he was so terrified when he got out of the pool! His dad is good for telling young kids "stop crying like a baby!" Yeah,...great parenting uncle! Your son is in shock, and scared that he almost drowned! And all you can tell him is to stop crying like a baby? How about you watch your son to make sure that he's safe and not in danger! Be a good father and protect him! And comfort him when he's that badly scared!

Helped a person struggling in water before, held onto my right arm and leaned on my right shoulder pushing himself up out of the water completely but drowning me ,if it wasnt for another person there I was seconds away from losing it ,was coughing up water from the amount i had inhaled. I was briefly absolutely pissed at the lad for nearly killing me before releasing he probably didnt even know he was doing it, fight or flight mode
