You certainly have been through such an ordeal lately. As a new viewer I have to just applaud your commitment to taking the best possible care of your pigs. It's easy to see how much you love them and try to give them the best lives, even if they see determined right now to be lil independent rebels lol I can tell you have a lot of nervousness and anxiety about trying to bond any of the guys, yet here you are STILL trying to provide them each with an opportunity at companionship. All of these guys are SO lucky to have you! Also the oven mitt is so smart, but for some reason makes me laugh every time I see it come into frame :)

Boys usually need to be bonded when they’re younger so when they grow up they work out their issues while bonded. I got a 10 month old and a 1 1/2 month old baby boys and they are just fine. If you don’t start them young with socializing, they’ll have dominance issues because they’re so used to be only so when another boar in this case comes into play, they react with dominance because they aren’t used to it. Time and patience is key with boys. My boys still chatter at each other but no biting or fighting and I always tell them to knock it off and boop their noses so they know no fighting and it’s worked wonders.

I let 1 of mine roam around today on the bed w/ me bc something happened to his eye 😒🙄... although it does look like it's getting better. He walks away just to come back, crawl up my shoulder and "yt it up" w/ me. That or just tries to get in between me and the phone. & he's more of the 'tudey (attitude) 1 whos more independent. I think he thinks he's trying to dominate me sometimes bc of his need to climb up my face. His nails are also black tho... so, that's painful. But I think he just thinks oh, who am I kidding. Then just can't help but to be in my face softly biting my lip bc he wuvs me but he's also "too grown for all that." I feel bad for my naturally loving older 1 bc I think he knows I know im disappointed in his actions. He just kind of makes his whimpering noises & looks at me like but u hafta understand. These youngens done blew up on me and now they're trying to jump me 😔. He runs up to the cage & I wag my finger at saying his name in a ure in trouble Mr. tone, & he just looks at me like what tho 😡😤😞😓? He's not really in trouble. But my boys ... tsk tsk 🤦🏻‍♀️

I feel you! I got two castrated, male bunnies. I had read that bunnies don't care about gender once they are neutered... But I don't know if that's true cuz my boys fight so bad when they are together! They love to live near each other though. As long as they are separated they feel comfortable to interact. They will sleep near each other, groom next to each other and eat next to each other... But if you take those bars out from between them well it's just a whirlwind of stress. I've read up on many different bonding techniques and tried a few out. I just can't put my bunnies in this dangerous situation anymore. They have to be separate. I might try again after they are past the young buck stage. So maybe we can revisit bonding when they are 4 or 5.
@angellover254
@angellover254 2 жыл бұрын
What kind of bonding techniques have you used to bond your male bunnies? I just successfully bonded my pair after 3 months of continuously bonding them every day. Maybe I could give some advice depending on the methods you've tried already.
@Zullala
@Zullala 2 жыл бұрын
@@angellover254 I've tried the method where you put them in a little box together with a screen separating them. That's pretty good because eventually they will calm down but as soon as I lift the screen up they try to kill each other. I've also put them on the washing machine, but I only did that once because I don't know if that's really a good idea. I heard that it works for some people but I think it just agitated my bunnies. I've also tried to give them a little bit more space and just put them in a boring empty room and they actually did really well for about 10 minutes and then they decided that it was time to kill each other. I think the main problem is that I don't have every day to bond them. I could only really find the time to bond them three times a week and that's probably not enough. I probably have to bond them daily and truth be told I don't even like doing it the three times a week because it makes me very upset! I'm so concerned that they will really injure each other and then I'll have to take two bloody nosed bunnies to the vet. That could cost thousands of dollars to get ripped noses stitched up. Plus I would feel incredibly guilty if my bunnies got seriously injured. They seem happy to live side by side. When I'M able to quit my job or take a significant amount of time off I'll try again. Because I know they value each other's company and I would love them to be able to snuggle. Oh one major problem is that they refuse to groom each other. They will get into head wars and just sit there until they are both properly offended haha. Then my half lop will try to hump my other bun and the other bun is just not having it! Neither want to be submissive.
@angellover254
@angellover254 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zullala Thanks for sharing! Putting them on top of a washing machine is known as stress bonding, and while it may help some really aggressive bunnies, I feel like stress bonding does more harm than good. That's why I personally never did any stress bonding with my pair, since the process of "bonding" is already stressful enough. But yes! Unfortunately, you do need to bond every day for at least 4 hours otherwise you'll see setbacks, and you're basically starting from square one when you bond again. Next time when you have the dedication and time to bond your pair, definitely invest in a good set of gardening gloves, or gloves made to capture feral cats. This will help you break up any fights so you and your bunnies won't end up in the ER needing care. The bonding method I used, is starting off with a 2 by 2 feet enclosure. I used C&C grids for easy expansion. So basically 2 grids by 2 grids. Make sure the area is 100% completely neutral to the buns and away from their living areas. If they can see/smell their living areas, they will be more aggressive since they're trying to defend their territory. But also make sure that the neutral space has enough room to eventually get to a 6 by 6 feet enclosure (or however big their final living quarters will be). Once you have that set up, it is important to put both buns in the bonding pen at the exact same time, otherwise they can claim it as their own (make sure there's nothing separating them in the pen either because they can claim sides if you do that - that's probably what happened when you took the screen away in your method). Make sure you have hay covering the entire bottom of the bonding pen and nothing else. No litter box, or toys. This can cause them to be territorial and fight even more. You can use a tarp so your floor doesn't get ruined. That's what I did. It is very very normal for buns to fight in the very beginning. They need to learn to trust each other and the more time they spend with each other, the more trusting they will become. Once you go 3 days without any bad behaviors (bitting, digging each other, boxing, lunging, tornadoes) you can expand by one grid size, so a 2 by 3, and then a 3 by 3, and then to a 3 by 4 and so on until you get to a 6 by 6 and that's when you can add in a litter box. See how they do, and if everything goes well, you can start adding in toys! Before moving them back to their forever home, you need to make sure everything is cleaned and free of their scent. So wash everything and spray everything down with white vinegar/water. Bonding bunnies can be exhausting but it will be 100% worth it in the end. Once they get over that initial hump, fighting will decrease, and you will start to see grooming, cuddling, and them loving each other :) Depending on the pair, it can take anywhere from 4 weeks to a few months to bond successfully. But you should see the fighting and bad behaviors hopefully going down after a week or two weeks. Hope this helps! :)

one of the reasons i do my intros without hay or anything in the cage is really just because it cuts the time of the bonding down. if there isn't anything to distract them from each other they have to interact and if they're going to have a confrontation it will happen sooner than if they wanted to eat first

My boys have lived together since they were babies but they recently started arguing quite a bit. They are almost always rumble strutting and teeth chattering and it’s getting quite scary. I think my more submissive pig is starting to be more dominant and the other one isn’t liking that very much. I was wondering if there is anything I can do to make them not fight because I don’t want them to hurt each other. Their cage is 15.5 sq ft of floorspace but I have enough money to buy another and make it over 30sq ft.. do you think upgrading their cage could possibly help them not fight? If their fighting gets too bad I am definitely able to separate them but I just don’t want any of them to get hurt :(

@anaph8552

There is a very interesting video on KZfaq named 'Guinea pigs living wild in the garden'. It shows a loooot of guinea pigs (mixed males and females) living peacefully and naturally together. The new babies are born into the community, raised by everyone and learn how to live peacefully together (even in a mixed group). So these guinea pigs never get through a bonding process because they are part of the group from the day they were born. The University of Münster (Germany) published some interesting studies and researches of males who were born and raised inside such large mixed groups. Accordingly to the research their hormones differ from males who only lived in pairs making them more peaceful and less aggressive. The males in these mixed groups also have their favorite females with which they usually stick together but never bother to 'steal' someone else female or fight another male. Domesticated male guinea pigs are often unsocial, because a lot of people purchase 2 or 3 babies and let them grow up without adults which are so important for their proper upbringing. Luckily wild guinea pigs don't have such a thing as humans, who would separate small babies from adults, create unsocial little piggies, put them together with other unsocial piggies and wonder why they won't get along ;)

Hi - I absolutely love your channel and have loved learning about the pigs. I hope this doesn't sounds rude I am just genuinely curious. Can you not bond a boy with the girls? Or is there more risks with this? Obviously I would assume they would be neutered (not sure if there is a different term for the piggies) because the only risk to me would be babies. But like I say I am just genuinely curious and want to learn a little more. Thanks 💛

Yes, Morgan, you can bond a neutered male with a group of females. This is often the most successful way with males. But it can be expensive to neuter and of course it comes with the risks of the surgery.

How frustrating. Sorry it didn't work out but at least you know they are happy in their living situations. I have three girls that have always lived with each other, but they just kind of tolerate each other. I would love to add another girl but I'm not sure If I want to go through bonding.

Still dont get why you wont make herds with all 1 male and then atleast 2 females. Last video someone told me you gonna do that with Vision. But why not all of them? You have enough females for it I believe and it will be so much easier and more peacefull. And yes it will cost a bit of money to get them neutered, but It will be so much better for all the pigs to have friends around that they acually like to be around.

I’m pretty sure it would cost a few thousands for him to neuter all his males… It can also be a bit risky in some cases.

A few thousants? Do they work with diamond tools in his vets place? And tbh, if you have that Manu pigs, you have the responsebility to pay for your animals if needed ofc. A Pig that is alone becouse its too expensive to neuter is not a very good argument in my opinion. And the risk with male pigs is not that big tbh.

@@epicmarbella Idk I don’t live in the US but I heard it costs around $500 to neuter. And while I sorta agree with your statement, nobody would’ve guessed that (almost) all their male bonds would just break all near the same time.. He also did mention on instagram that he’ll be getting Winston and Vision neutered so that’s already a good thing. Plus, they aren’t fully alone, they have bar mates (I think that’s what some people call them). So they can still interact with other guinea pigs they just aren’t in the same cage. And until he can neuter all his males (if that’s his plan) than it’s still ok :)

I’m wondering the same… it’s really not that difficult a task when done properly. I’ve found most of the Guinea pig vloggers anthropomorphize their cavies to a dangerous level and I think that’s the route of the problem.

@@DogsonaQuest anthropomorphize??? what exactly do you mean by that?? Some guinea pigs don't get along, and in the end it all comes down to the guinea pigs personality. Just like people, not everyone will get along. It isn't his fault the bond failed.... I'm afraid when you have girls boys will never get on I had 2 boys that were best friends for just over 3 years then I got 3 girls. 2 weeks after getting them they started drawing blood from each other. I let the 5 of them be together for 8 months but the boys kept getting into fights and the last fight got really serious and I had to decide to seperate the boys. All 3 girls ended up getting pregnant. I ended up having 7 boys and 7 girls. None of the boys ever got on they all had to be separated. I got all the boys done which I regret cos one of my babies died at 4 months which was really hard. All the boys ended up with a girl and one boy with 2 girls. I lost one of my older boys which was so hard. I know have 5 pairs of boy and girl in cages and one with 2 girls. When they have floor time one of the mum's and 3 of her babies join together. She is the one that lost her other boy baby. so it's a boy with 3 girls when there out and the others are still boy girl pairing. I had to learn the hard way that boys will never get on even if they were really close with girls about. Boy and girl piggies are just as gorgeous as each other. You need to find them all rescue spayed females. Hope this helps. Your not on your own with this. It is hard work that boys won't get on when they smell girls. My piggies are my world along with my 4 doggies

Just stop bonding them. Obviously none of ur single males can’t get alone. They got friends in cages beside each other. That’s better than them getting hurt in the process and risk of injury. Or rehome the single ones. I got two males so far they okay. They fight and chase each other and one rumble struts. But if get bad all I do is mist the one starting it. And it breaks them up fast

Why did you insist on bonding males? You always rescued boars instead of girls, but now all of them are alone. I never heard of all male guinea pig groups except on youtube. All our local rescues, shelters and the animal welfare association recommend a harem or a female x male pair.
@anaph8552
@anaph8552 2 жыл бұрын
If every guinea pig owner would go for a harem then there simply won't be enough females left for every male, since the gender quota is 50/50. So a lot of males will end up being alone. That's why male pairs or herds are so important and can work quite well if the owner is experienced with them. Male herds are not uncommon in my country and a lot of rescues and shelters appreciate them because they always end up having more males left than females (which are getting adopted really fast because the majority of owners go indeed for a harem).

Lots of people have male pairs, not male groups. Austin can’t just shell out thousands of dollars to neuter all his boars. I’ve seen so many rescues, including LAGPR, do male pairs.
@minzkaffee2440
@minzkaffee2440 2 жыл бұрын
@@autumngrace. But I imagine the people he rescued the boars from didn't give him the boys for free, right? And the food cost of owning so many boars is also a lot. I don't know what it's like in the US or United Kingdom, but in my country the costs are far from a 1000 bucks. Yeah it might cost over 100 to neuter a boar, but it's not THAT much. Yeah, now he has a lot of boars that he would have to neuter and spend a lot more money. But if he got one boar, neutered him and then got him a female, he wouldn't have to spend so much money in one go and a successful bonding would be more likely. I just don't understand why he got a boar, then another, then another etc. Was there a reason for it? I mean, just because you want to rescue a pet doesn't mean you should or have the right friend for them at home. That's why rescues adopt their animals out on "trial". If the bunny doesn't get along with the other one, he needs to be taken back, where they have the chance to find the right friend. And @Anna I suggested a harem cause Austin has a female group. A pair would be the easier solution of course. Then the 50/50 ratio wouldn't be a problem. Like I said my rescues all adopt them out in pairs or with the condition that they get a mate of the opposite sex. It's very rare that two boars are paired up, most likely they were taken in as a pair.
@autumngrace.

@@minzkaffee2440 it cost over 500 each in the US, so it is that much. also most of his boars used to get along he didn’t adopt them all as singles. so he didn’t get a single boar, then another than another like you’re saying. most of them he adopted as pairs then their bond broke, only a few of his boars were adopted as singles.
