This was their first major hit all over Europe. They went onto have much bigger hits and became "Huge" They were the biggest selling act of 1978 in The UK. Often referred to as the "Black Abba" quite a fitting compliment as they were to Disco was ABBA was to Pop. Rivers Of Babylon was their biggest seller , reached no 33 in The US, No1 everywhere else in the world. Legendary Act.

Boney M were much more appreciated in Europe (they were formed in what was then W.Germany) who got the eccentricity.

We lapped them up in the UK-they were huge here from 1976-1979. Rivers Of Babylon/Brown Girl In The Ring is still the seventh biggest selling UK single ever with over 2 million copies sold & Mary's Boy Child the eleventh biggest selling ever with nearly 1.9 million copies sold.

@@Hi-kq1vi WOW!! I used to dance to them in the clubs in NYC in the 70s and worked in a record store so I loved them but they didn't get a lot of airplay here other than Rivers of Babylon..

rolf svensson very little AirPlay on the radio but were played in the dance clubs. So most didn’t know them. Rivers of Babylon got the most airplay to my memory but not tons. Boney M was a lip sync group produced by the same guy who produced Milli Vanilli. The difference? He never made a secret of the fact that some members sang but many did not (including Bobby Farrell who was hired because he was an exotic dancer). He should never have kept it a secret with Milli Vanilli.

Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett sang on the records. The story behind it perhaps helps...their first single Do You Wanna Bump - solely done by Farian himself under Boney M -became a hit in The Netherlands. So the Dutch Tv asked a live performance for a nonexisting group. Frank Farian hastily collected a group for the lip - synced Tv performance. Mitchell had been in Les Humphries Singers before Boney M.
@hectorsmommy17175 жыл бұрын
@@onsesejoo2605 All he really needed to keep the Milli Vanilli debacle from happening was "let it slip" that they were lip syncing before the Grammys. Their music would have still been played because it was fun, just like Boney M was fun. People wouldn't have felt as cheated.

Don't say like that they had given massive hits like Rivers of Babylon, Mary's boy child , their Christmas album was very famous all over the world, Rasputin , daddy cool was massive hit all over the world. But underrated by some. Other groups and recent groups will be making noise and such songs will be given Grammy awards and it is pathetic. Americans has a lot of opposition against racism. They are highly partial and only like other countries. ABBA old group in 70s was good but lyrics was too long and they will be repeating the lyrics again and again. Donna summer was very good and impressive. I consider donna summer and Boney m best in 1970s

When Americans critique something they can only critique it from their level of consciousness and experience I don't know how to read the time that this was the 70s that black people performing in Europe who came from the Caribbean were phenomenal. Boney M. was big all over Europe and in Russia till this day it's one of Russia's favourite groups. This is why Tina Turner left America she travelled and expanded her mind and that's why she had the notoriety but she had she would've never of got that by staying in America because most Americans don't realise how narrowminded they are.

You will notice that the german crowds don't get amped up EVER, never dance to the songs or sing along rarely, they were huge in europe, germany specifically because the producer of all the songs was Frank Farian (who also created mini vinilli) and it's Frank's voice that is used as the man in the songs, Bobby was a stripper to he would always do similar moves in performing :D

So funny your reaction. But Boney M. may not have that big success in the US but they were so huge in Europe and West Germany and so much loved! They also were big in Russia, behind the iron curtain at that time, they were paid in Oil! Their music still fills dancefloors all over the world! You just need to know that the male voice was not the voice from the performing dancer but from the producer of Boney M., Frank Farian, a white guy by the way. In most Boney. M. songs, Liz Michell the lady in the golden skirt took the Lead, she was the main original voice in Boney M. I love them still... The audience was just a normal German TV audience at the time, always a little taken back and not fully concentrated in the Performance, independent Who tue performer was ...

DID YOU KNOW: the real reason the crowd wasnt reacting to the song... the singers were actually lip syncing the whole time. the producer who got them together also put together milli vanilli, so it shouldnt be a surprise to any one.. the people you see on stage are there just to 'front' for the actual band that sang the songs from backstage "the very concept of a real Boney M is inherently bogus. This band was gloriously fake right from the start: a funky Frankenstein's monster stitched together by German record producer Frank Farian after his 1976 single Baby, Do You Wanna Bump? hit the charts in Holland and Belgium. No oil painting himself, Farian needed more photogenic youngsters to lip-synch his music in public, so he hired session singers Marcia Barrett and Liz Mitchell from Jamaica, model Maizie Williams from Monserrat and the late Bobby Farrell, a dancer from Aruba.
