Lyrics:
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Required from us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Requiering of us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon (dark tears of Babylon)
there we sat down (You got to sing a song)
ye-eah we wept, (Sing a song of love)
when we remember Zion. (Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah)
By the rivers of Babylon (Rough bits of Babylon)
there we sat down (You hear the people cry)
ye-eah we wept, (They need their God)
when we remember Zion. (Ooh, have the power)

It's lived a life before this... Psalm 137 [1] By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. [2] We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. This is a very easy question to answer. The black guy dancing around is not singing anything, the song was written by a german white guy who is doing the singing, the guy you see jumping around is lip syncing. In addition, the good looking gal the camera is focusing on is also lip syncing, she is in there as window dressing. The person who created this whole thing should get an award.

@Peter Evans . This recording is analogue. Digita recording of music began in the midst 70's with classical music , made by Philips and Deutsche Gramophon . In the end if 70's, Giorgio Moroder made the first digital recording for an album, the mane is E=MC². But the first album totally in digital recording was The Visitors, the last album of ABBA. It's realized for a "new" technology called compact disc. An analogue recording if well done can be so good than a digital recording, but to show their sound quality depends of the transcript to digital.

@Peter Evans in the 70's there's a standard level for digital recording in bits . The consumer standard choose is 16 bit, the recording studio at the time in the early of 80nuses 32 bit. In the 80s Stwart Copland, former drummer of The Police did an d'Italia album called The Rithmatist. He used a equipament that uses a 13 bit.

Psalm 137 1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. 2 There on the poplars we hung our harps, 3 for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. 6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.

Hey, sounds like you forgot the rest of the psalm: 7 Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation. 8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. 9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

2023 and still listening after so many years I can never get enough of this song. Boney M. masters of vocal harmonies. I was 14 at the time when they performed in Poland and I was crying listening to this band. This is how much I loved them and I still do for the rest of my life. I also used to play this song with my wedding cover band on every gig.

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down. Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion. 2 On the willows in the midst of it, we hung up our harps. 3 For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy: "Sing us one of the songs of Zion!" 4 How can we sing Yahweh''s song in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill.

Daniel 2: 44..psalms 37: 9, 10,11, 29 And no more pain and death revelation 21: 3, 4 So not only does it bring back memories of when I was young? It also gives me thoughts about the future. ... They are lip-syncing... The whole band was pretty much a scam. Only 2 of the females are actually the singers on the recorded track, and the male voice is done by the producer of the band. The producer was so successful with them that he went even further with his next band: Milli Vanilli. So it's 100% talent - but not the talent of the people you are seeing, lol.

It's based on the bible. It's about Israel being beaten by Babylon. Psalm 137:1 KING JAMES VERSION By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. {137:2} We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. {137:3} For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. {137:4} How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land? {137:5} If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. {137:6} If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. {137:7} Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof. {137:8} O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. {137:9} Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett have their own individual projects, and can be booked for events on their websites. Reggie Tsiboe seems to be living out his 70s out of the limelight. Maizie williams is actively touring with a Boney M. "Cover band." Bobby Farrell unfortunately died in 2010 of heart failure in a hotel room while on tour. Interestingly, he died in St. Petersburg, Russia on December 30. The very same city and date that Rasputin (the subject and namesake of one of their most famous songs) died.

My heart had leapt up when I happened to hear this song out of radio in my school days. Many years later, I was told this song was Boney M's, and I see them singing via KZfaq this morning for the first time after four dozen years. Love from Seoul

Everytime you listen to Boney M, you think this is their best one, and then you hear another song from them, and then you think, no this is their best one. They are all master pieces.

Boney M sang one great song about an Old Testament story (from Psalm 19 and 137), and they sang one beautiful song from the New Testament. Incredible band.

"Rivers of Babylon" is a Rastafari song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of the Jamaican reggae group The Melodians in 1970. The lyrics are adapted from the texts of Psalms 19 and 137 in the Hebrew Bible" Wikipedia :)

Thank You, Jenny. I've been looking to see which Psalm this song is from but was unsuccessful, then based on your comment I looked it up and there it is. Also, I totally agree with you that the Bible always amazes me also. Thanks again and God Bless.
