@@johnwilliams7922 Sometimes it is comforting to find out that something has not happened. That's ok. I have an emotional attachment to that song. A while back I spent about 18 months living in NE China. When my wife and I returned home we had to self isolate. In China I missed playing with friends at home, so I used to regularly take my acoustic guitar and play for a few hours in an open space downstairs where we were staying. I used to enjoy playing "Angel From Montgomery" as well as other favourites. Everything is connected, this song, a lovely time with my wife, the love she gave me, how she looked after me when I had a viral infection (no not this dreaded one) a city I grew to love but had to flee because of that dreaded virus and I'm now listening to "Murder Most Foul" by Dylan................ I'm convinced Dylan released it to soothe us in these trying times.

This song will forever be a testament to the song writing talent of Mr John Prine. John could become a veteran with PTSD, an old man looking back on life with his forever wife, a young boy who witnessed the tragedy of the loss of one of his peers and express the grief he carried with him into his old age. With this song he entered the mind of woman looking at life lived and the hardship and pain of doing so. Unlike these two women who do have the voice of angels, John didn't have the voice of a great singer, BUT his songs carried him to the top of the heap. Even after his operation, it didn't matter that his voice was ruined, his fans stood by him to the end.

I have tears running down my face and dripping onto my chest. John Prine writes such remarkable stories. And Bonnie Raitt has delivered this so authentically for the better part of a half century. But these days she infuses so many miles of living into it that it becomes something even more special. Props to Ruthie Foster, the band, and the strings on this version as well. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in putting this together, and putting it out here for those of us who were not present.

first hearing Ruthie Foster wow life has blessed us again with such talent! This an enormous favorite song by Bonnie for me. This is one of those songs that gives me chills and brings an old man to tears! Reminds me of my Grandfather who would come in from the fields of his farm and sit in his chair by the window looking out at his world for hours without talking just deep in his thoughts! The line about how can a person have nothing to say. He was a WW1 veteran and as I matured and learned of the trenches I don't know of what he thought but I'm sure he deserved his thoughts!

Taking NOTHING away for the incredible Ms. Raitt, but the REAL musicians are in the band. My daughter was a music major, and it's very hard: not only did she have all the regular core courses, but she had all her practices, rehearsals and performances - it's very similar to being a college athlete. Tempted to agree but I saw Bonnie at the Albert Hall in London a few years ago. She sang this with a Canadian singer (name I can't recall) but it was without any backing. Tingles in my neck.

I've seen Ruthie Foster twice in concert. She's fabulous. One was at the International Guitar Night...the first time I heard of her and fell in love with her music that night. Then I had the pleasure of seeing her at a very small venue on Lopez Island, WA where she was performing for a local school to promote the Arts in Schools. That night she had a concert for the public. She was so personable and friendly and so much fun!

This kind of music reaches inside and touches your very soul and sometimes tears escape from your eyes. Bonnie and Ruthie Foster, whom I plan to seek out more of, did more than justice to this John Prine masterpiece. Fly high, John! You left us with so much to inspire us.
