Bono - BBC Interview (Live Aid 1985)

3 жыл бұрынU2 performed at Live Aid in front of 72,000 people in Wembley Stadium, London on the 13th July, 1985. Here’s Bono being interviewed by BBC's Paul Gambaccini. The event was organised by Sir Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for the Ethiopian famine disaster. Broadcast across the world via one of the largest satellite link-ups of all time, the concerts were seen by around 40% of the global population.

Wow!! U2 delivered an impressive performance at the Live Aid. That was the day in which U2 became U2! Their performance was second only to what Queen were doing exactly during this interview. This video is a piece of history!!

I am forever obsessed with the year 1985. I was only ten at the time, but it resonated with me on a number of levels. Especially the summer. As a New York Mets fan, it was the summer of Dwight Gooden and the Mets. As an avid watcher of MTV, it was the summer of Bruce, Prince, Dire Straits, Cyndi Lauper, and Wham. I'm obsessed with finding moments that make that summer feel alive. This particular moment, with Bono talking as Queen blow away the crowd in the background during Live Aid, is one of those moments. Pure gold, in my opinion.

You should know Bono is the most hated man in the entertainment world…he held another musicians family hostage for hours…with a gun in his mouth…watch One…they made him do it…he’s a horrible dad…he was just a need in the night…he’s crazy (Lepers in his head) figure out the person who really wrote that song and it’s his family…listen to Green Day… kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l914hrmpnp-9j5s.html It’s was Billie Joe family…now who are his mom and dad really…his dad died…his stepdad is Sting…now who is Sting really married too. That whole album is about that fateful day when Bono held his family hostage in 1989…Mike and Tre are Billie’s half brothers…Green Day are not portraying heads…They used to be called Sweet Children but change to Green Day on that horrible day Bono was stoned out of his mind.

This was the singular most important musical event that affected the way people looked at the power of pop-rock music. It changed the world and did something no Governments could quite do. Hats off to the artists like Bono and especially to Bob Geldof who spearheaded this movement. It was a wake-up call both to the self and to the world.

Yeah I watched the first few seconds just noticed the interviewer's hair being blonde. Nothing else. And then as it went on I thought to myself ... I recognize his voice. Paul 'Lamborghini' yeah wow hair !!

Well - their career took off after Live Aid. Being a U2 fan at that time I really noticed the difference before and Live Aid. Before live aid most people looked at you with a bit of a strange look (even though Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year’s Day were pretty well known and Pride was about to be a big hit) but after live aid they knew about U2 and their music).

@@andubh9360 I concur. Being 15yrs old and my contemporaries being consumed with Duran Duran (female) & David Bowie (male), a U2 fan was largely ignored before Live Aid. That's not to say we didn't have some common ground.......they just didn't know it then....😉😁

@@surajts7806 I totally agree. And the the most astonishing/greatest thing is that they still stay relevant and that you still can feel the U2-vibe/dna when that change their style of music. They could play electronic music, jazz, Irish folk music both instrumental or with song - you would still know it’s them. Having said that - their greatest strength is putting up these mega big concert productions and still make you believe that you’re at a small club and also making their message come across in their live shows and taking in conflicts and things that happens in the world in the shows in a good and natural way. And also that their “special effects” reflects that and the emotions in the songs - no cool effects or pyro just for the sake of it. (Maybe except for the three fighter planes that flew low over Croke Park during “streets” leaving coloured trails of the green white and gold from the Irish flag at Joshua Tree 2017 tour)

They interviewed Queen before the show. Freddie got iritated by the questions so gave them to Brian to answer. They seemed dispondent before their performance, not in a happy place. Yes, I wrote down the whole interview by hand when I was 15 in 1985 so definitely was listening. Queen were old by then. U2 were up and coming. It was a revival time for Queen.

Ok. Everybody is talking about Queen and musically they deserve it. No question about it. However, back in those days, musicians were politically active and Queen...well, they performed in South Africa for white audiences only. It was very disappointing to see them doing this cause they were aware of the situation. That's why the U2 participation in Live Aid was much more impressive for the 80's audience than Queen. U2 and Bowie reminded us that this concert was not about fun. It was a very serious issue.

And Freddie with Brian performed "Is this the world we created" at the end of Live Aid. Which was written by Freddie and Brian after they saw a documentary about African children, long before Live Aid. Also, they are musicians, and when musicians go on stage the audience wants to see them do their best. And Queen were the best that day.

"White audience only" is fake news. There were mixed race audiences at their week-long residency in Sun City. Still a controversial thing, but let's avoid bullshitting the public.

Queen were paid well for the Sun City concerts, that was the reason behind the decision to play in South Africa. And they missed it because of Freddie's throat troubles that shortened the number of concerts there. Also do not forget that they played to the mixed audiences there and they never were a political group, thus it's kinda awkward to blame them for any " politically incorrect concerts". Load of rubbish. And do you remember folks, what it all was called? It was called "cultural boycott", a very nice way to treat apartheid, for sure. Let me tell you this: Queen had their perfect right to play in Africa, just simply because their front man was born there, escaped the genocide of the Arab people in 1964 without having said any word about his political views on it. Come one.

Its always something to see musicians in their younger years. The difference in energy/presence, before the confidence (& maybe arrogance, lol, has fully come online). Theyre more interesting, imo, in their youth, before theyve '🎶been all over, & its been all over🎶 '. Before they've crossed that line. Im talking about the males of course, since Im a female, (Ive never paid that kind of attention to the females). Female musicians are different, of course. Its that kind of youthful, fiery, masculine passion that only a male could have. Intense & angry for no apparent reason (that we are aware of lol). The men change as they age, the music changes, the energy & presence. They are just not the 'same' imo. Of course everyone changes as they age but with the males, it seems more like something other than just growing older. Ok, enough of that...cant be bummer-ish on the live aid channel. I saw a video of John 'Cougar' (before the 'Mellencamp' return) a bit ago. He looked like he was like 16 yrs old lol. So young & fresh faced. 😄✌🏾

Seeing a young Bono here doing this interview whilst Freddie Mercury/Queen are performing in the background is like the ultimate 2 ships in the night passing each other on completely different paths, at completely different times, on completely different arcs during the their respectively epic personal and professional careers. It gave me goosebumps to hear it.

Yup. Huge difference from the post Joshua Tree Bono. Except when they were doing their live aid set. Its almost like a different person was on stage compared to the interviews that Ive seen from that day. Now, he acts the same, on or off stage lol.

Not sure about that. I think he's wondering if his crowd antics during Bad was a disaster, because the band was pissed off with him for disappearing into the crowd for so long that they ran out of time and couldn't play Pride. It turns out, it was actually one of the highlights of Live Aid that put U2 on the map.
