Thanks Alex. I didn’t quite get the result I hoped but am fairly certain this is because the tree was in a more shaded spot so didn’t get direct sunlight to warm it up. But fortunately have got buds forming. 👍

Great updates Jason. You could definitely do the root over rock now. Just don't cut many of the roots off. Use all of the growth to wrap it around a rock. I have two i am doing right now. That Silver birch will be a fun challenge for the future. :)

good stuff. I have an identical shishigashira from Home Depot, they had 100 disectums, and only two shishigashira lumped in with them. Needless to say I got them both! I should probably start an airlayer as well.

Thanks Jason. Enjoyable video with lots of experienced insight. My winters are nothing like yours. Minus 5C is a cold day and we might occasional get further down towards -10, never any real snow. I also like the pond baskets. For those trees that are out all winter do you have any concerns that the 'open weave' baskets will allow freezing of the complete contents? Maybe all your pots freeze completely? I have no experience of that sort of weather. I wonder whether I should be adding some protection around baskets as we come into our winter.

Winters here in the UK are often quite mild, with short spells of -5 Celsius, and -15 is quite unusual. Snow tends to be quite short lived. We do get lots of rain. I have not had any issues with freezing. It’s only a concern if for prolonged periods or if it comes quite suddenly.

Nice spring tour and update. Love that the Tony birch with the high potential leafing out nice. Oaks are funny, never stress and be first in any ways. Maybe that is the secret to their ability to grow old. I got two saplings from a friend last summer that he digged up from his lawn. It is now mid April and they have just got rid of the last years leafs, so I guess the buds start to swell. Most other trees are far ahead in leafing out. How far are your oaks normally after like say the maples and sutch?
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 3 ай бұрын
Oaks and beech that hang into their dead leaves are always the last to emerge in spring. My oaks are beginning to leaf out now but not yet the beech.

Hi Jason. As usual, I have watched your video a few times now. Can you tell me what the conifer is at the 2 second mark, just after the fish waving? It looks to be a larch???
@TheBonsaiGarden
@TheBonsaiGarden 3 ай бұрын
Good spot Mary. It is indeed a larch, one of the tallest trees in my collection. It’s the same tree that Adam from Notion Bonsai helped prune in a video in June of last year. For the first time this year it has started developing flowers/cones which I am ridiculously excited about 🤭

@@TheBonsaiGarden It's a very beautiful tree. And guess what Jason, tomorrow, or I should say later this morning, I am getting some koi. Someone nearby is getting rid of his small pond, and is giving his koi away. We have so many wild animals around here, not sure how it will work out. A wild mink ate all of my koi several years ago, all throughout the winter. It barely broke the water surface going in. The very large hungry bear is back, I have no bird feeders up for him to destroy this time.

@maryweber4176 I got that tree from Banksia Bonsai nursery in Wisbech, about three years ago and it has put on significantly denser foliage and is a lovely looking formal upright. Great news with the koi and I hope they survive the predators. We regularly get visits from herons which is why the pond is covered.

@@TheBonsaiGarden I have a very large pond, and after a visit from a heron, I have a heron statue in the pond, which seems to work. I was told by someone when I belonged to a water garden society that those birds are territorial. (My pond is too big to put a netting structure over.) And the ducks who frequent it would be very angry at me. I will have to rewatch your video with Adam. Have a great day Jason
