Over the years I have experimented with different methods for growing.
In this video I share some of the things I have found helpful when growing strong vigorous trees. For example if you want to grow your tree strong the trick is to stand it on a bed of gravel and they will root into the gravel and become strong. With vigorous growth you can select the branches that you want to use then you can prune, trim and wire the rest.

Thank you for this channel. Very good detailed information. i absolutely love how you break information down. just finished your soil video, i have to say it is awesome how you really press home that everywhere is different and every plant is different so there is no 1 answer. as you have said multiple times in different videos the first goal of bonsai is a healthy tree. Me and my wife are starting a few japanese maples to create bonsai with.we have never done this before but both have wanted to for a long time.so thank you for the pleasant, informative, and wise videos.

Must admit that I’ve been led to believe that leaving the wire on would eventually kill the tree. None of my bonsai books mention this technique!! Thank you for showing me these tips.

I think he repeatedly mentions that the trees are black pines for a reason, i.e. that this is a technique specifically for them. Leaving the wires on certain kinds of trees ends with the wires slicing straight through the bark and ruining/killing the branches.

We use mulberry trees as anchors for the fence, and where it attaches to the trees, it grows around. The trees are strong and hold the fence up, even when the fence itself is crumbling.

I will always remember this picture of a tree with a bicycle stuck in the trunk, the tree grew around the bike, it looked awesome. I wonder if such a thing is possible with bonsai, embedding objects into the tree. They would have to be little trinkets to fit the little trees, but it could add value.

Here in the Philippines, bonsai artists use extention pots. Meaning, they would use a large basin filled with sand and soil mixture so that they will pot the pot on top of it.

I have seedling and sapling specimens that I potted last year and this year. As of now, I have them in a homemade potting soil. I was wondering if they can remain in an organic soil and if so for how long. Commercial fertilizers can add up to quite a few dollars and I am trying to keep my hobby as low-cost as possible but still provide the utmost care for my trees that I have harvested from our 38 acres. I was also wondering if a homemade fertilizer could be made, liquid or solid, from bunny, chicken and/or duck manure. Thank you so much for your time.

Bonsai is for everyone. So, it's a safe bet to suppose this is a new era of stylistic innovation. As to the wire-bite, it's a matter of taste. I don't personally like it, but I'd never presume to say "it's wrong."

Great video, I'm interested in the technique with the potted tree that developed into the flower pot below. If i were to repot it into a bonsai pot, is there a way to reduce the amount of damaged roots as i pull the tree out with its roots passing through the holes at the bottom of the first pot? Much thanks.

That is my problem with the clubs as soon as you start thinking outside of the box on something. You get ridiculed for it until they see a master do it then it's okay.
@peterchan3100

I wish clubs were more polite, respectful and inclusive. But like everything in life - you get some good ones and some not so good ones. I used to chair many clubs years ago, but in the age internet, clubs will have to find a new role for themselves or they risk becoming dinosaurs.

There may be some wisdom to the use of iron wire though? Maybe that the tree can utilize it as it oxidizes? For the most part though they probably callus it off and have no access to nutrient availability. But seeing as they are pines I think they do laterally supply growing buds so as long as you never cross those wires across the trunk cutting off sap flow you should be good.
