Today I bought a seedling lemon planted in a polyvinyl bag. I then transferred it to a rigid plastic container and decided to wire it up in order to make an S curve movement along its trunk. The rigid plastic container has holes in its lid deliberately done where I can anchor my wire in it. Shown is how I did it.

what a wonderfully timed video, I recently collected a few maple saplings (my second attempt. all my other plants are store bought. half price and half dead.) this video has helped me to understand how to create movement. (bend just a little each day) during my first attempt I cracked the trunk and it eventually died due to my lack of experience. thank you again for another teaching.

half dead? try to put it back to vigor first by watering and fertilize when stabilize. wiring is an additional stress to the tree.

+Bonsai Iligan, thanks again, I cannot afford full price plants, (15 to 25 dollars and up) so I go for the discount sales and, unfortunately, they are usually under great stress. I call them my rescue plants.

i am in the process of growing a sea hibiscus to use for a bonsai. Have you ever worked with that species?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
I've worked with a hibiscus but not probably like your specie a sea Hibiscus. my problem is it didn't flower yet it grow so large with large leaves too, occupying so much space I gave up and lend the space to another specie. Had space not been a concern I could have grown it till now and waited for it to flower. I've seen one in a bonsai show presented totally defoliated with very good ramification. I guess that's the way to present it in shows.

cooll....nice job. ...I hv few questions sir....1)what was the reason to wire at this stage, will it not effect the thickning of the main trunk...2) Can you transfer this in bonsai pot at this stage, wht can be the advantages & disadvantages.
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
you wire the trunk when it is between brown and green. you can even wire when it is more mature meaning more brown. but you have to be careful not to snap the trunk. then you remove the wire as soon as the wire digs in. don't let it stay too long as it might damage the cambium interfering with its growth and branch thickening. you need larger containers to support trunk thickening so you don't transfer in a bonsai pot yet. but don't transfer it in ground as it will be harder to manage roots later.

I thought that the movement should be made with trunk chop no? How will you get a taper on this tree? When should you wire it, after trunk chop or before?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
I'm still thickening the trunk by growing tall. taper can also be attain by growing sacrifice branches low in the trunk aside by trunk chop. traditionally trunk chop first but I usually wire first I might get lucky to attain good movement and sacrifice branches without needing to chop.

I just started this hobby. I find alatiris and moringa's trunks interesting. can I bonsai this trees? ......Thank you so much
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I guess what you mean to bonsai is to miniaturize the trees. But there is more to bonsai rather just shrinking their size. you need to have balance, harmony, scale etc. that is why I chose specie that can live long and even outlast me. I chose harder woods and trees which can shrink their leaves and are tested to survive in shallow containers. their value increases with time assuming you got the skills to make it into bonsai. In that way you don't lose time you have spent in caring for your pets/bonsai.

I've recently purchased a Maple about 2yrs old, and have stuck it in the ground to allow to grow thicker. Any ideas on what to anchor the tree from when wiring?
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
haven't tried wiring a tree trunk when it is already in the ground, I guess you can just plunge the tip of the wire to the ground beside your tree but not near enough it may hit your roots. push as deep so your wire anchors then coil wrap the other end to your trunk. My usual practice is to wire the sapling while it is still in the pot prior to planting in ground. I keep the tree/sapling in the pot until big enough for ground planting. by then the wire would have been removed already and the trunk has retained its S curve.

I use the Co-lander method before planting in ground and the Roadstick technique to anchor wires in the pot.

Bonsai Iligan I know it's a little unusual to wire in the ground, but the tree was store bought and in bad health so at the time I thought it was best to plant in the ground. Thankfully, after 2 weeks the tree was looking a lot happier. I wasn't originally going to wire the tree, but it has a grafted top into trunk and I feel the direction of its growth will not my intended design, although this may be too premature to decide it's mature shape. Thank you for the advice, I think it will be the best way to anchor but needed professional advice. Thank you tutor.

No you cannot use ordinary hanger wires or laundry wires. they are aluminum wires specifically for bonsai. I ordered mine from "Harbest" an agricultural store. (heck Website) also I buy from scrap and anneal them by fire. you can buy electrical wires from hardware but limited gauges.

i posted a videp that has my plumerias and other plants and i show it in the video. its about 7min 45 seconds into the video and the mother plant is at the end of it if you get a chance to watch it i would love your feedback
@BonsaiIligan
@BonsaiIligan 7 жыл бұрын
you did not post a link so I can't watch it. but I can give feedback right off. firstly I am into traditional bonsai. Meaning the trees should have long life which increases their value with time, live long for decades and can outlast you so I chose hard wood. Not necessarily with flowers but some trees have fruits and flowers which can be a double incentive. If I am right Plumerias have soft trunk, big flowers though beautiful and has broad leaves. That is difficult to scale cause we want our bonsai to look like trees. But again what is important is what we enjoy, so if you are into miniaturizing flowering trees, then enjoy. it. but you can't show them off as bonsai or enter them in bonsai shows.
