Find out why bonsai enthusiasts find Zelkova so fun to work with! Eric works on a batch of seven two-year old Zelkova, demonstrating how to trim roots and branches, and pot them up for another year.
00:00:27 Eric removes the trees from the flat, rough cutting their roots apart to separate them.
00:00:44 Eric explores the junction of the roots with the trunk.
00:01:15 What to do if you identify any problematic roots. As part of the Elm family, these plants respond well to fairly aggressive root trimming, and really, all bonsai work (that's part of what makes them so much fun!)
00:02:43 Eric wants all the roots to come out on the same plane, so he examines them from 360 degrees.
00:03:37 Watch Eric trim the roots on six more trees. So zen...
00:06:19 Eric cuts back branches.
00:08:00 Wiring time! Eric creates some sexy winter silhouettes.
00:12:09 Repotting, including wiring the root base to secure the trees in the soil.
00:13:01 Eric lays out the roots to ensure their placement is flat (on the same plane) to encourage the type of growth he desires.
00:13:16 Watering
00:13:23 Quick explanation on some of the work - how Eric anchored the trees into the soil, for example.
00:14:30 Making a three-dimensional broom shape. Eric has had success growing a few to middle age (15 years) - have you had any success? Let us know in the comments below! And if you're looking to pick up potted young Zelkova, either in a broom or copse (clump) style, please visit our 2022 Limited Release page: www.bonsaify.com/collections/...

I've grown a batch from seed in the UK 8 years ago. I've been thickening them up in the ground from the last three years as I wasn't getting enough growth and wow they took off. You've got to watch the rocket branches on these or you get nasty coarse growth at the apex creating knuckles. Great material though. Look forward to lifting mine next spring. Those would probably make a nice forest too.

I've used every cutting I've got from my Chinese elm and have used garden soil, akadama, sand, perlite and mixtures of these and the only thing that has caused a issue is not keeping them wet enough. They're almost as prolific as honey suckle...

Hi Eric, another fantastic and informative video! You've got my bonsai ideas going. Would you recommend this work, at this time of year to someone less experienced? I have about 7 similar age and size Zelkova that I'd like work the roots. I'm based in the UK and it's mid winter now so we're facing potential freezes of around -7*C before spring arrives. I do have a cold greenhouse to use for protection.
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
The safest time is always around earliest bud-swell. But with a greenhouse you have leeway. Just protect from below freezing after the root work and they'll be fine.
@austinjk24
@austinjk24 2 жыл бұрын
It amazes me how much of the roots you can take off . What is the survival rate ? Thanks !
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
We did about about 500 this way last winter, I think 1 died. Afterward they are put in a greenhouse with minimum temp of 55F. Bottom heat would work just as well for pushing the new root growth because the top temps are not important for that. As long as they don't freeze and get some warm time within a couple months they'll live.

That perlite looks unsifted, do you find any benefits to using unsifted perlite? I’ve read that it’s best to sift out the fines (like smaller than about 3/32” or 2.4mm). My guess is that for development at early stages it may not be worth the time/effort to sift fines but I’m curious what your thoughts are/experience is
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah extra work, and it's dusty to sift. I find for most plants when young that it's great with some fines. For Black pine and other water sensitive species, remove the fines for sure. Or just use a larger grade like #3

@@Bonsaify do you use this mix for most trees?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Propagation, young trees etc. For mature bonsai we use normal APL mix. Or sometimes Aoki pre-mix cut with lava or pumice.

What is a good mix for trees that may have the desired size but still need develop together in a forest? Pumice and akadama ?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Pumice-Akadama-Lava, PA, PL, are all fine. I find akadama is too expensive for nursery use, but if you already have it use it. Or sub perlite for the akadama and mix with P or L. Be sure to sift dust from P&L as the residue can cause problems even in net pots.
@JAMES-dv5ns

@@Bonsaify thanks for the reply , big fan of your work. I have a project going on that’s some trees on big lace rock and some in a wooden tray to grow / develop roots before it’s in a formal forest container. The pumice will be used and perhaps some lava but I was going with akadama mainly because I stocked up on it kinda like Scarface on his cocaine table when it was available. It’s a mixed forest with deciduous, spruce and larch to model a boreal forest. So using a mix that could facilitate good rain age, root development and water retention because the spruce and larch combined with deciduous

Would Vermiculite be a suitable substitute for the perlite in your starter mix soil recipe?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not as familiar with it as a substrate. But you should try it and let us know! It is a common component in commercial mixes so I imagine it will work well!
@kylepurvis6231
@kylepurvis6231 2 жыл бұрын
I did some testing with the Vermiculite, found that it holds much more moisture than the Perlite. So as the main component of the soil mix will be much to wet most likely. However it does work as the secondary component, for moisture retention. I’m using it at the same mix as you use the cococoir . Seems like it will work very well and not break down over time. Sticking hard wood cuttings this week!

Is there a reason you use a grow pot vs a pond basket or collander at this stage? I would think a collander would help facilitate faster growth.
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Colanders work fine, but they don't actually make faster growth - they are for air-pruning the roots. I don't use colanders for Zelkova generally because deciduous trees like more water than something like a black pine.
