Oh, the joys of winter! Specifically, the joys of Japanese Greybark Elm in winter! We've just released a batch of one year old bare root Zelkova and we're selling them in bundles of 5, 10, 25, and 100. They've been grown in flats with some roots trimmed. They're kind of like a lump of clay, you can do whatever you want with them.
00:00:21 The story of Eric's 15 year old Zelkova, which he started from seed. It's a beauty! With patience and good bonsai practice, you can go from our bare roots to a bonsai that looks just as good. Eric demonstrates three options for planting the bare root trees.
00:01:41 First, an individual tree (like the 15 year old we previously discussed). To get a radial root spread, cut off the bottom of the seedling back real hard and drill a hole in the base of a flat piece of plywood, using a chopstick to arrange the remaining roots to be straight out. For smaller plants (like our bare roots), Eric recommends using a washer (he is using a Fender Washer in the video: amzn.to/3G0J1q2). Next, put the tree into a container, keeping the washer relatively flat with all roots remaining below the washer, and then backfill with soil.
00:04:48 Second, a clump. Position the trunks right next to each other. To make small clumps with bare root 1 year old's, Eric takes a piece of #1 aluminum wire and wraps it around the trunks to position them relative to each other, and then pots them.
00:05:29 You don't need to use wire if you follow the approach Eric demonstrates - firming soil around placed clump in container. The trees then grow together.
00:06:36 If you later want to make larger forests, you can do so from a few clumps, arranging them into a larger container.
00:07:23 Third, wiring Zelkova. Wire tends to relatively quickly leave an impression (scar) in the bark, so watch them "like a hawk". Since Zelkova don't develop any rough bark, a wiring scar will really stay visible. As soon as you get 4-5 leaves on a few shoots in the spring, remove the wire.
00:08:49 Eric wires a bare root tree into a semi-cascade style, which he thinks can look pretty great.
Have you wired Zelkova before? How did they turn out? Let us know in the comments below. How do you plan to style your bare root plants? We can't wait to find out! Please like and share this video, comment, and subscribe to our channel!

Great video. I have found out that they start ridiculously easy from cuttings😅 money saved. But will try the washer tip and also create some cascading ones 👌

Yes! Cuttings are super easy! And, if you wanted to make a forest that has uniform fall color that would be the way to go because the seedlings are all over the map. I have found quite a delight in a mixed seedling forest with some trees being yellow, some orange and some red. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Eric, I bought Zelkva elms from Bonsify and they’re doing great! I plan on making a forest out of them, I’ll clump plant them this winter into larger pots and in a couple years put them together in a forest, I’ll just use ‘clip n grow’ to shape it. Whatcha think? Any hurdles I should be aware of?
@Bonsaify

No, just regular care. Keeping them in larger containers for a while early on will speed up development. My larger old forest was in a box for many years before going into a bonsai pot. Try to avoid having too many branches come out in one place, they seem to like to do that a lot.

Hello! If I wanted to develop one of the zelkova brooms you have for sale into something similar to the 15 year zelkova in this video, would i primarily grow the branches and then cut them back/keep them in check when they reached the desired thickness? If this was the plan, instead of bulking up the trunk and then doing a hard chop, how do i increase the thickness of the trunk? Would all the divisional branching power the trunk growth? Are you constantly reducing the apex on these over the 15 years? Sorry for so many questions! Excited to try it this way instead of the trunk chop big wound method.

That small older one never had a sacrifice branch larger than the size of a seedling. Basically, it seems that the way to make the best small Zelkova is by repeated growth of small branches. The bulking of the trunk comes naturally but is not fast. I'll also be trying a few different techniques this year with seedlings. I think you can get a head start by growing the trunk to about pencil size or slightly larger, then doing a cut. But I find that any cut larger than 1/4" is difficult to manage. I know there are some techniques for managing the swelling, but I haven't tried them.

I'll be getting some zelkova serrata seeds soon. Do you think it would be a good idea to germinate them in the fridge in early May or should I wait until the end of the year so I have seedlings in early March 2023? Thanks!
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
I think a 30 day cold strat followed by germination would be my suggestion, no reason to wait.

When you place the seedlings through the hole in the metal are you worried about damaging buds?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
A bit, but the buds on Zelkova are quite small in winter, so just take care and it should be fine. At the bottom where the washer is actually tight there are no buds (and you don't need any there if there were anyway.)

Yes. But, actually we're not 100% sure it's needed. Traditionally they are actually grown for winter silhouette. But they seem to just keep growing where it stays warm.

@@Bonsaify Yes but do they might die after a few years because they struggle for staying a life or not?? Or we can grow them like a tropical tree or subtropical tree ?? Summer time outside and falls and winter inside the house under horticulture lights

Do you know where I can find Japanese Beech seeds? 😁 Also.... What started your bonsai journey?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Beech are hard to start from seed. I'd recommend you get them from a nursery as young stock. (It takes up to 6 months to prepare the seed alone.).

Have you tried experimenting with letting the wire sit on them, letting it get embedded totally?
@Bonsaify
@Bonsaify 2 жыл бұрын
Ha, good question, but no. Because the bark is always smooth I have not thought to do that.
@kylepurvis6231
@kylepurvis6231 2 жыл бұрын
I have had this occurs unintentionally, it leaves a spiral scar with a different bark texture that is always present regardless of how long the tree matures. The barks never appear to blend to look natural. The tree will never be show worthy, and I’ve seen the bark covering the wire die off too creating a big scar.
