Hey, buddy , great first Yamadori collection adventure and good to see you too are using Cat Litter. I have been using it for the last three years, and in my recent videos started to tell viewers about it. The only difference between us is that I don't add pumice or organic matter. Very soon we will have every one switching from akadama to Cat litter. The bonsai revolution has started !!
@BonsaiTalk7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mikbonsai... we use some coarser substrate for collected material and for yamadori always. I would say we use 10-20% of chipped bark as organic maximum.. have a great day, until next time.

Nice Yamadori find. As a rule, I always plant 2 trees of the same variety whenever I harvest from the wild. It's just my way of giving back. Also, I am not comfortable with telling myself that mother nature has bigger problems than my bonsai garden. Enjoy your bonsai journey!

Hehe, i enjoy your sense of humor.. I really like that idea of planting 2 trees for every 1 tree one digs up. Welcome to bonsai talk Jon Axel, let's grow!

If enough of the original root system is left intact and the hole re-filled after taking the specimen a new tree should propagate back through the soil and new growth should appear the following spring bring a new tree. But planting trees is always a good practice as well. 😉👍

did the oak survive? would appreciate some pictures from 2020 of the oak if there is a blog. But a quick answer if survived would be nice. I thought bare rooting a oak is very risky. Maybe its OK depending on what time of the year its collected? This oak is collected in April?

I started collecting my yardadori and from my bog last season. I discovered that the tree species here all spring from a common buried branch!😂 Inevitably I give a tug after digging a ring and pull up a root like it was a buried rope, breaking earth in a line straight ahead. Usually there are a few feeder roots. The elm expressions are OK, mostly, but the locusts haven't liked the severance pay.

Nicely presented information. I liked your tip on using cat litter for soil. Question regarding wire. Seems quite expensive to buy different thickness aluminium or copper wire from a bonsai shop. Especially if it is just for tying a root ball down into a pot. I was wondering if you know of a cheaper alternative for buying wire?
@BonsaiTalk7 жыл бұрын
How ya doin' Ian Hilton? Try chinese bonsai wire, a.k.a black bonsai wire made from aluminium. Copper wire is expensive indeed compared to that!

I am new to bonsai, and I'd like to know more about the "kitty-dama" that was used for potting. I assume a non-clumping cat litter that is used instead of akadama, but is there anything in particular that I should look for? Non-scented probably? Are there certain kinds that are more pH-neutral? Thanks.

why do you remove the dirt from the roots already in the forest? wouldn't it help with water retention during transport?
@BonsaiTalk6 жыл бұрын
Whats up Rafael.. We do this to minimize weight and because that soil is not needed for the plant since the distance between the collecting site and our homes are not so far apart. Let's say this was in the mountains, and we were along way from home.. we would have "packed" these trees in a whole different way with more care and preventive solutions like (Extra water, alot of support with tape and some construction, sphagnum moss around entire rootball, soil etc)

that is generally the case it seems. my red oak is about 30cm tall and most of the leaves stay around 2.5cm. im pretty happy with how it forms its canopy even when some of the leaves do get a bit large. im hoping it continues to stay in good proportions.

If permission needed,where to get from. And, Am I allowed to carry survival knife during a trip to the woods? Your time and advice is much appreciated. Cheers.

First of all, are you subscribed? I cant see you are, you should, let's grow! Yamadori is allowed with the county, state permission or/and the landowners blessing permission. Knife holders in public places is be deemed to be legitimate in Sweden. Hunters, outdoor people and scouts will have a knife with them when they go out into the woods and land and craftsmen may wear a knife in connection with professional practice here.

That second tree, why did you pull the rocks out of the roots? Isn't there value in "roots over rock" features in bonsai?

This was almost terrible to watch, because i know a lot of birch trees i want to collect, but i have to wait until spring before i can do it. Still it gave me more inspiration then frustration :) Also thank you for the cat-sand tips.
Nice job but I don’t know where you got the idea to use cat litter. Most cat litter contains some type of perfume which doesn’t do the tree any good at all. Use a basic soil mix with lava, river stone , akedama and some collected soil from where the tree came from. You’ll have a much better success rate. Also, that cat litter wasn’t washed out. Lots of dust in there. Also, don’t use such a big container! The size that you used will never dry out and you’ll have a chance of getting rot rot.
@BonsaiTalk5 жыл бұрын
Whats up Gil! Let's talk bonsai.. Reconsidering the "Catlitter" It's actually a big difference between commercial catlitter in EU and the US. This specific brand that we use is 100% organic burnt clay (Diatomaceous earth) and nothing else. All those things you are implying and saying, trust me.. We have already thought about it, and perfected it. There is a reason why we work and do what we do, when we do it. One other thing, bringing back some original soil is ok idea, but it only fills purposes that we can adjust IF needed, that is the risk of eliminating finer roots in the yamadoriprocess *OR* not getting healthy percentages of mycorrhiza (wich is only really nescessary for Pine, larch and Oak. We know this. Reason why we use big containers is to captialize on the current rootsystem, and there is not a chance that we will get rot rot with 100% in-organic matter, thats the actually one of the reasons you NEVER should even consider using organic matter if you have good water control. Thanks for the sharp observations... Welcome to BT also!
