Please skip to 0:09:45 to start watching the lecture.
We live in hugely paradoxical times. We will see greater change in the twenty-first century than we have in any previous human century. Huge leaps in science and technology, accompanied by huge economic and social advances in many societies around the world, especially Asian societies, will mean that the texture and chemistry of the twenty-first century will be massively different from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
How will it be massively different? It will be different in three significant dimensions. First, we will see the end of the era of Western domination of world history. Second, we will see the return to the success of many Asian societies, especially the two most populous societies of China and India. Third, as a result of the rapid shrinkage of the world, through both technological leaps and growing interdependence, partly through global trade, humanity is no longer living on a vast planet. It is living in a small, densely interconnected global village. Indeed, when future historians look at the twenty-first century, they will marvel at how many big changes happened in the human condition in a small space of time.
'The Asian 21st Century' is a collection of essays by Kishore Mahbubani that will demonstrate the multitude of ways that make it clear that we will soon be sailing full steam ahead into the Asian twenty-first century. Watch this lecture to find out more about the book, and about Asia in the 21st Century.

@@startrooper3502 As you quoted Ben in Spiderman saying, "With great power comes great responsibility." US exercises great power irresponsibly with sanctions, bombs, wars, racism, slavery, atrocities, abuse of nuclear and chemical weapons, genocides, regime changes, colonialism etc. Its heroism and good deeds are stories it creates in Hollywood to mask its abuse of power. India as a victim of colonialism, racism and atrocities which cost millions of Indian lives, understand and will never be a power to bully or exploit others. It's aware that US and the West have the agenda to divide the two Asian civilisational neighbours, to prolong its hegemony. It does so by leveraging on their border disputes, which were legacies of colonialism in the first place. It's India's choice alone, not China's, US's or Spiderman's, what best suits India. That choice impacts greatly on geopolitics. And everyone knows that. Next time try Bollywood for heroes and heroines.

I follow almost every speech by Mr. Mahbubani. As a European living in Taiwan, I have a question on the China / Taiwan potential clash. Taking under consideration the fact that a potential conflict would utterly disrupt the global supply chain of goods and technology, the fact that Chinese and Taiwanese businesses are so interlocked, do you think that a) China/Taiwan will be willing to clash and b) in the event external forces (aka USA, UK etc) provoke such a clash, do you think that are ready to face the consequences of such supply chain disruption? Especially considering the consequences that Europe especially is facing during the Russia/Ukraine war. Thanks
@Time4Peace
@Time4Peace 2 жыл бұрын
The main objective of US is to get China to attack Taiwan to start a proxy war. Taiwan will be destroyed and Taiwanese will pay the price with lives and blood. Taiwan will inflict the max damage on China with expensive and deadly weapons. But Americans will not be in harm's way. While China's focus is sovereignty, US"s goals are to do what it is doing to Russia - delist, decouple, deglobalize and demonetize China, to stop its economic rise. US will force nations to take side. There will be massive disruption in supply change but S Korea, Japan and US will pick up the slacks. There is still time to expand production capacity outside Taiwan in the meanwhile as the proxy war will only be initiated after the Ukraine war (which is also a proxy war against Russia). The irony is that Taiwan is currently enjoying trade with China and the democratic processes without declaring independence. The final choice really lies with the Taiwanese.

Yes and no. Singapore is a port city so subject to many influences, and Western infrastructure has helped us grow. Using English was a pragmatic decision, as was leveraging on Western education. But culturally and philosophically, Singapore has its own character. Also, the West is not a monolith - Singapore heartlands (and kampongs back in the day) are strikingly similar to small towns/cities in North America, for example, which also embrace pragmatism, as many have their origins as frontier towns full of migrants. So long as we don't lose sight of what is best for Singaporeans, we'll be fine.

It sounds to me that Europe is not really united but states form cliques and have different interests. In the current situation, France, Italy and Germany seem to desire negtiating a peace treaty with Russia but Poland, Rumania and Lithuania prefer to weaken Russia. The bigger the EU/NATO, the harder they have to reach a consensus.
@friedhelmschroter8124
@friedhelmschroter8124 2 жыл бұрын
@ Tina Tang I do agree your first 2 sentences. On your 3rd sentence you should clearly separate between EU and NATO. Security/protection is of paramount importance and as the real protector of Europe is US, the NATO is rather fast/easy to come to a consensus where the consensus is rather an agreement to what the US does propose, because none of the European states dares to confront US/loose the protection power of US (behind closed doors European points may be brought up as points to consider, but if the US either cannot or does not want to compromise on its goals, there is no other choice than to accept what US wants). Economic advantages/disadvantages inside EU are a completely different point. Here everybody fights to its own advantage often resulting in blocking necessary decisions/reforms.

@@tinatang1 I do not understand the relevance of your question "Which EU states are NOT In NATO?". My point was, NATO discusses/handles security related points and because of the paramount importance of such questions AND the dominance of the US (nobody dares to say anything against US) NATO does easily come to conclusions. Vice-versa the EU has no dominating power like the US and the economic/political questions discussed/decided there are not ot the paramount importance security is, you do have quite often some blocking of decisions which would be important for the EU to procced in a useful/powerful way. I fully agree that the EU and NATO are nearly identical (the same persons do decide), but as NATO decisions are dominated by US solely there is not always full agreement between EU and NATO, and especially the speed/ability NATO comes to decision is much faster/superior than that of the EU.

The next Shangri-La Dialogue should not be held with (or by?) IISS which is a British think tank. With Lockheed Martin on the think tank's council, the optics are not even right for SLD to be seen as neutral and impartial. It's time for Singapore's and Asean's think tanks to be running SLD or some version of it. It's important for Asean to remain neutral and welcoming to both China and US or else faces the risk of being divided or fragmented into pro-China or pro-US camps. Hence, SLD must maintain that neutrality in pursuing a dialogue with an agenda of coexistence rather than confrontation. Unfortunately, that neutrality was seriously called into question by the design of the dialogue and some Q&A session.

How can dictatorship compete with a meritocracy which is an advanced form of democracy which continuously attracts the best talent in the world? The development of any country has more to do with retaining its own talent and at the same time attracting and nurturing best talent from around the world. For example, the richest in USA is the Indian community , with a per capita income twice as big as US and fifty times of India. It’s because there is exodus of talent from India and China to USA. To change, both India and China will have to shed their Licence Raj and dictatorship respectively. Allow freedom of expression and create business friendly environment nurturing innovation and market forces. That is nearly impossible, as it tantamount to change in political system in China and abolishing bureaucracy in India.

Recent updates and events happening in the Taiwan Strait, U.S. & within the PRC, should convince and provide ample evidences, that the PRChina-US disengagement is accelerating and increasing in velocity. The US led world order, which benefited PRChina most immensely, over the last 3-decades, may be well over. Opine, it is unlikely, the US-China Relationship, first fostered by Nixon's visit to China in 1972, meeting Chairman Mao, perhaps the climax, where in 2000, Clinton pushed the U.S. Congress to pass the U.S.-China Trade Agreement and China accession to the WTO, can continue to improve further. In 2000, before USA supporting and sponsoring PRChina into WTO membership, PRChina GDP (2000) was just about USD1.2 Trillion. It was then ranked 6th in the World economy, where US was #1, followed by Japan, Germany, France & UK. In 2021, China GDP grew to some USD 17.45 Trillion, a 14.5 times increase, as World #2 in GDP. The US lead World Order has had made China immensely wealthy. Now, clearly, PRC desires to break away and to disengage from the U.S. led order, by rejecting the USDollar based International Trade Transaction order, which clearly threatens status quo and undermining the economic & financial security of the U.S.A., th4, don't tell me the China-US relationship deterioration presently witnessed, is only transitory. Now, without the U.S. support and USDollar regime, can PRChina be the Champion, to lead Asia into the Golden Age of the 21st Century.??

Prejudices of national, racial, religious, cast and class. add to these glorification of material pursuit and huge gap between rich and poor, we get a toxic soup. A solution is to acknowledge and teach certain basic facts about humanity, one of which is that, humanity is one people, and based on this fact, educate people that betterment of Asia and in fact the world, can be accomplished through pure and good deeds and commendable conduct. Pragmatism will not take us anywhere, if we do not have a collective high vision, are not united, and teach our children and youth that end justifies the means, because this is how politics works.

That is where the problem with the west begins. The west has subjugated Asia and the Asian people for 100s of years and their sense of superiority and entitlement over the Asian people has not gone away or even diminished. The high level of the Stockholm Syndrome disease suffered even today by some of the societies, from their colonial days, has only helped to reinforce that feeling of superiority by the west.

China just escaped from an American Trap on 2 Aug 2022. Please note, I am not referring to Frederic Pierucci's book, titled: "The American Trap: My battle to expose America's secret economic war against the rest of the world." I am referring to US House Speaker's Pelosi controversial, but deliberate visit to Taiwan, much to China's opposition, to put it mildly. It is debatable whether it was an accidental alignment of several "wrong stars", or was it a deliberate attempt by the US to provoke China into a war when China is not in a position to match the US toe-to-toe at this time. In fact, there are several think tanks (including Rank Corporation's) had mentioned that the "window" to act to defeat China militarily is within around the next 5 years.

With updates of recent events over the Taiwan Strait, it would appear China-US disengagement will likely now accelerate even at a much faster pace, unwinding and untangling some 50 years of relationship, first fostered by Nixon's visit to China in 1972, meeting Chairman Mao. Without the US led World Order, which supported and provided fundings to the platforms of centrralized Global Manufacturing and Global Supply Chain Sourcing, of every widgets, focused in PRChina... How will such massive changes and economic disengagement, expected, to provide the new Energy & Propulsion for PRChina to create and lead the Great Future envisaged for Asia. Don't tell me, this disengagement is just transitory!
