I have read no other author more over the past few years than James Baldwin. This young friend has done such a great job describing Another Country , and the social commentary behind it . A plus review my friend

+Brown Girl Reading Thank you! It's my favorite Baldwin book also. I think it takes a lot of the things that Giovanni's Room did well and takes them to another level.

As Baldwin said, in one of his interviews, concerning "Another Country" Baldwin states "It is about love, but it's about the price of love too. Which is the price of life."

Great review. I've had Giovanni's Room on my wishlist for a few months but I think I'll just get this first as an introduction to Baldwin's writing instead. :)

This was such a great review. I really love reading Baldwin and have read three of his works so far. This one is on my list to read before the end of the year. It sounds like one I am going to love.

Great review! I loved your discussion of the themes! I read this over the summer and I really didn't love it as much, though I really understood the levels Baldwin was trying to write from. You definitely made me appreciate it more so!

Fantastic review, Mickey. It's great to see people reviewing Baldwin (other than Giovanni's Room, as SteveReadsBooks once said). Thank you for brining attention to the matter of "romance" in non-romance books. I liked what you said about Baldwin showing how romance is alive yet also the problem(?). Keep up the great work. Love your videos!

+LizaadBooks You can't talk about this book without acknowledging that most of it is a love story. It also manages to be way more than that also. I really really loved it. I'm happy you enjoyed the video. You are the sweetest!

this book. oh my, this book was definitely one of the most soulful read that i ever read. your review is very thorough, articulate in such a straight forward way that it is impressive. i buddy read this in the last week of february and even though i had amazing discussion with lady (formlady) i'm not sure how to chat about this book in my book chat. really powerful review.

+Manika Wangata I love FreeFormLady. I had been thinking about this book for a month after I read it and even still I had to rewrite and rethink my review a million times before I could record it so I'm happy you enjoyed it. There's so much going on in that beautiful book. It took me a while before I could find the right words to express it. We should do a buddy read this year!

+Mickey's Booktube Experiment i am so excited to read more of him yet at the same time dreading it. because baldwin knows how to hit hard, make you think, push you out of your comfort zone. i would love to do a buddy read with you, i always enjoy your insight on books and dear young layd you are very much articulate! i saw that you are or were reading And Their Eyes Were Watching God so i hope you'll do a review of that one. i acquired a copy after seeing that book for a year or so and Zadie Smith was just the last push to make me pick up a copy of my own.

Such an amazing review !!....I haven't read his books but loved a review a booktuber made of "Giovannis' s Room" but this sounds great , which of this 2 novels is best to read if you want to get introduced by this astounding author ?....

+adriana adriana so sorry I'm responding to this so late. I would start with Giovanni's Room. It's really beautiful and it's short so it's a great introduction to Baldwin. I think Another Country takes some of the themes from Giovanni's Room and takes them to another level. However, you really can't go wrong with either.

Baldwin's "Giovanni's Room" was written in 1956. It is about homosexuality! What a revolutionary and bold thing to do in 1956. It was way ahead of his times. Writers who approach the gay experience today, need to give credit to Baldwin. Baldwin was a bold risk taker!!
