Fantastic review. I haven't started with the series yet but I loved how much you took out from it and how much you relate to it. Loved it really

Wonderful review Mickey! I had the same experience as you. I struggled for the first 50 pages but then I read the whole thing in two sittings. As someone who moved to the US to continue my education I could relate to Elena. There were time when I felt embarrassed of where I came from. Having inferiority complex in high school and college. Luckily I learned it was only my insecurity and people were as ignorant as I was when young. And yeah lol my mom really only cares about the money I'm making. I know you skipped the Nino drama for the most important stuff but... Ugh He broke my heart. I had crush on him since the first book. There were times I hated Lila sm but other I really felt for her. Though she redeemed herself near the end. That sequence when the lover takes over the house was amazing. I was like "YES LILA YES!!!" throughout the whole thing. Just amazing. Again wonderful review.

My boyfriend finished this one yesterday :) I am super super SUPER excited to read the last one next month. I absolutely love this series, and with regards to the feminist stuff, I feel like it gets way more into that in the third book. I loved watching you talk about the book and how you related to situations in it. I haven't had any specific situations that remind me of the book, but I relate to Elena so damn much...the good and the bad, mostly bad though. I feel like she has an inability to see herself on her own, and she is always in relationship to Lila, or Nino, or whichever boyfriend she currently has, or her mother. She is so complex, so much going on there. Ah! Fantastic video!!

Very interesting review! I am currently reading this series in Italian so I find it very thought provoking to hear your opinions and perspectives of the English version.

Such a great review once again! I have only read The Days of Abandonment by Ferrante. I have been in a queue for the first book of this series for months in my library.

I'm loving this series so much, for all the reasons you articulate here. I could not believe how cruel Lena was to dump the diaries but the book surprised me by making her actions make sense. And once they got to Ischia I could not put it down. Great review!

There's a strong rumor the author of this series is male. Wouldn't that be interesting?? Crushing for some, judging from the above video.

It actually wouldn't be crushing to me. Even if the author is male, the characters and story remain the same.

I've heard rumors the author isn't really from Naples and didn't grow up in poverty. Haven't heard rumors they're male.

@@mickeysbooktubeexperiment3029 This paper is "gated" (i.e. most people have to pay to view it or DL it). www.researchgate.net/publication/320131096_Elena_Ferrante_Unmasked But if you're good at web searches like most young people are, you can find at least one "ungated" address to get this paper. It has also been discussed in the New York Review of Books and discussed by Jhumpa Lahiri (not confirmed by her, but discussed) in multiple interviews. I believe Jhumpa Lahiri actually knows the author personally. Lahiri seems to dislike the discussion of it, but remains confidential on both ID and gender of the author.
