I didn't like repaints either but I just started collecting around '86 or '87 and Flint was my favorite Joe and it was nice to finally see him(and other series 1 and 2 characters) on toy shelves even if was in Tiger Force attire.

1987 was the year that I stopped collecting new GI Joes, but it was 1988 when I stopped regularly checking the toy aisles to see what new toys were out. It was Tiger Force and all the reuse of old molds that killed my interest completely. I think the last new figure that I really remember wanting to own was Gung Ho in his dress uniform.

Work sucked this week. This video came at a great time, the images brought back some special memories. '85-'88 is where my GIJoe childhood is buried (literally buried: I guarantee at least 20% of my Joes and their accessories are still in the soil behind my childhood home, and the other 80% have been in a landfill for the last 20 years). The only thing I have left is the bottom half of Bazooka, and Polaroids from Christmas day 1985 (me holding the Mauler tank) and 1987 (Recon Sled being unwrapped). I appreciate the efforts that this channel and others have made to redraw the map that leads to the treasures we left buried in our past.

So funny you say that. Just two weeks ago I started digging up my parents yard looking for my Joe's, after an exhausting search I found 5-6 star wars figures and they were in great shape surprisingly after 35+ years. I was disappointed when I didn't find a single joe. I found a small piece of the swamp fire blade so that shows how much memories can change over a long time span, I swore they were all Joe's!

I believe the pilot name for the stealth fighter was "Ghostrider". I have the original Rolling Thunder toy and it is massive. I loved that it was essentially an ICBM carrier.

I couldn't go past 1989. 1982 to 1989 I consider G.I. Joe. Favorite years 1985 to 1987. True passion. They really cared whomever was in charge. After 1987 the loser get money mentality took over. Zero passion. 1985 to 1987 SOMEBODY LOVED KIDS. THEY BLEW KIDS MIND.

During this time period, there were some strange looking vehicles and figures. The great artwork in this book is a saving grace. Thanks for sharing this with us.

thanks for sharing Mike, I agree these years the line began jumping the shark a bit w/ colors and weapons for both figures and vehicles and I was never a fan of the repaints, but 87/88/89 is when I started to walk away since I was 17/18/19 but there were still a number of figures I got so I could play with my little brother. I had the reissue of Deep Six and he was really cool. But I think the Night Force vehicle repaints were some of the best looking, and were fitting for stealth missions, esp the WHALE and would have fit perfectly for the D.E.F. and Cutter, which is the one sub-group I think gets ragged on too much. Now if for a number of these sub groups had repainted vehicles where it was logical, say Tiger Force having jungle vehicles, Night Force with vechicles that were more or could be more stealth based and then either repaints of logical Joes who'd fit or new ones. I mean Low Light and Spirit seemed to me they'd fit in with Night Force or DEF more than the Maruaders

Looking back at the toys, I regret not getting a lot of the Night Force, Tiger Force, Sky Patrol stuff, at least to make up for vehicles and figures I didn't have. I too ignored it back then for no real reason, but I did buy the re-issued Python Patrol X-30 about ten years ago. As for the usual feeling by peers about leaving GI Joe by this period, I was still really into it and a lot of the non-traditional military vehicles and certain colors didn't bother me. Some figures I didn't quite like or really understand (Lightfoot, Psyche-Out) but I got many of them anyway. I'm also glad I didn't see the new Dic series at the time to taint my view and how I played.

Great review. I always felt the same way about the reprints of figures. Duke with brown hair, ugh. Frustrating. But wow the artwork and quality of those books, beautiful.

speaking of big inconsistencies of characters and paint jobs and while talking about tiger force run, but what about what they did with outback tiger force version? like how does he go from younger man like ginger to old snake within a year of figure releases? lol also you're right about night force, but repeater is the only one i genuinely was like the new version is better than the old and that the collectors club exclusive was perfect! last point to make was a lot of the nightforce vehicles just looked like cobras versions of the joe vehicles and they should have put the effort in making either more sci-fi joe green vehicles or just make different vehicles all together rather than a new paint body.

Some of these figures, vehicles looked like they belong more with Inhumanoids. I would have loved to see Destro's Iron Grenadiers added to the Sunbow cartoon, like he was tired of Cobra so he made his own force to take comand, and who would he battle? Cobra Commander, the Joes or both?

I remember Storm Shadow defecting to the Joe's in the Marvel comics before being brainwashed into re-joining Cobra.

While I'm not crazy about the recolors either, I do think Outback looks better with the darker shirt. Might try to grab an unboxed version of just him online, without the recolored Psyche-Out.

@Michael Mercy I have a GIJOE delimma. ROC Bench Press has the same name of Rock n' Roll. So my question: is Bench Press from the Rise of Cobra line a variation of Rock n' Roll or a seperate charecter?

Beautiful artwork. Hey I'm with you on all the tiger force and battle force 2000 stuff. Was a real turnoff for me. All the sci-fi neon colors just does not belong in gi joe. Oh, but I want that fishing tackle box!

I remember debating with a friend as a kid about who would win in a fight, Storm Shadow or Firefly. Your thoughts? -Cameraman/Dad P.S. this collection of artwork is amazing
@MichaelMercy
@MichaelMercy 5 жыл бұрын
If it's in the comics, Storm Shadow hands down. Firefly was an explosives expert, not a hand-to-hand combat guy. Stormy would knock him out in a second. In the cartoon though, Firefly would put up a bit more of a fight, since Spirit seemed to be able to keep up with Storm Shadow.
